Crew Notes
All of the regular Tellinghuisen crewmen, listed above, were original
members of the 1Lt Roger W. Erickson crew assigned to the 360th BS on 21 April 1944. Lt Erickson became a Lead Crew Pilot. He was KIA on 22 June 1944 when he
ditched his badly damaged B-17 #42-97405 Mary Cary (360BS) PU-H in the English
Channel. The Lt Erickson Crew CoPilot, Lt Tellinghuisen was then upgraded from
CoPilot and was assigned as Pilot of the Lt Erickson Crew.
- 1Lt Oscar A. Tellinghuisen (P), T/Sgt Charles Manser (E), T/Sgt John
D. Haynie (R), S/Sgt Judson F. Watson ,Jr. (BTG), S/Sgt John W. Jacobs (WG) -
Flew on all sixteen of the Lt Tellinghuisen crew missions.
- Crew CoPilots & Bombardiers - The Lt Tellinghuisen Crew flew with seven
different CoPilots and eight different Bombardiers. The regular Erickson
Crew Bombardier, 2Lt John D. Moul requested relief from combat duty on 21
June 1944, before Lt Erickson's death, and was assigned to a photo ID unit
in London.
- 1Lt William J. Roche (N) - Flew on Eleven of the sixteen Tellinghuisen
crew missions (198 through 213). He had Flown on seven missions with other
Pilots when a member of the Lt Erickson Crew (164, 166, 170, 175, 184, 193
& 194). Did not fly on the last five Tellinghuisen crew missions.
He completed his combat tour on 28 July 1944 ahead of the rest of his crewmen. Four
different substitute Navigators were used on the Tellinghuisen crew's
last five missions.
- S/Sgt Ward A. Hudson (TG) - Was an original Tail Gunner on the Lt
Anthony Cecchini Crew assigned to the 360th BS on 02 April 1944 and flew on all eight of the Cecchini crew missions. Was wounded on 11 May
1944 (mission #151) and was hospitalized. Returned to combat on 20 June
1944 and flew on two missions (186, 187). He then was assigned to the
Tellinghuisen and flew on ten of the sixteen crew missions (205, 206, 207, 208,
213, 214, 215, 216, 221, 222). Five different substitute Tail Gunners
were used on six Tellinghuisen crew missions. S/Sgt Hudson flew his last 12
missions with five different Pilots - eight as a Togglier and completed
his combat tour on 7 October 1944.
