Stephanie Wright --- slwright1016hotmail.com --- 30 Sep 07 - Seattle, WA
I recently watched Ken Burns' "The War" and decided to try and find my Grandfather on the internet. Sure enough, a quick search led me to your website. My Grandfather was S/Sgt Samuel S. Wright, crewman of D.M. Reeder of the 359th. Before I came to your website, all I had known was that he was a turret gunner in WWII. Your website has confirmed that and has also provided so much information in terms of what their experience must have been like. I couldn't imagine fighting in a war, much less in freezing conditions, etc. My Dad's name is Kenneth and so was one of the men my Grandfather flew with. I wonder if that's a coincidence or not. Thank you for your efforts on this website. My Grandfather passed away before I was born and my Dad says he didn't talk about the war too much, so I appreciate knowing a bit more. PS- In the crew photo for D.M. Reeder, Samuel S. Wright is the one kneeling on the far right.

I was doing research on SSGT Irwan Johnson whose name appears on the Minot AFB Professional Development Center. A room within the building has now been dedicated to the 91st Bomb Group, 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, and 91st Space Wing. I am the 91SRWA Secretary.
John Monahan --- jrmonahanaol.com --- 28 Sep 07 - Bedford - MA
Very impressive....! I was surprised to note the spelling of the Monahan Crew. In most cases during that period of time, the 'g' was still used in the name.....as in County Monaghan.

I am the younger daughter of TSG Albert Thomas Beavers. He was a B-17 Waistgunner. He flew out of Molesworth with Captain Lemmon. Every time Dad visits us in Monrovia, he and I check out this web site. We all marvel at his stories. Thank you for being here. Deb Skidmore

I joined the Org. in 1985, was at B-17 Birthday Party in Seattle, and have enjoyed all faucets of the orginization, I pray somehow it will continue. You are doing a great job, keep it up.

Hi, I am a member of the 385th Bomb Group Association. The 385th also flew B-17sin the 8th Air Force. We flew out of Great Ashfield, and we visit the old field ever so often. Not much left, a few old buildings and the main runway. The people of Great Ashfield greet us with opennhands. The church at the town has a stained glass window which shows a B-17 tail with the square G. Their altar has a book with the names of all 385th KIA inscribed. Some of the locals are members of the 38th BG Association. Like your oranization, our number are dwindling, however, we have many children and grandchildren (2nd & 3rd generation) members. We hope they may continue to keep the Association alive. At this time there are five 2nd generation members who are on the Board of Directors. We publish a newsletter about three times a year, of which I am the Editor.

Thanks to Oliver L. Basher for every thing he has done for me to commemerate my father Victor N. Shook at his passing his funeral was being held at the exact time of the reunion, I could not have done this without him. I will never forget what he did for me, or what everyone who served did for our country.

I, my sister, and my brother and his son attended the finale reunion on behalf of our father, James W. O'Leary, who was a lead pilot with the 427th. We were honored to meet many other veterans, including dad's navigator, Mike Kecere, and Humphrey O'Leary, to name a few. I will always view ALL veterans, but especially those of the 303rd, with respect, awe, and a profound sense of humility. We literally owe these fine people our lives and freedom.

IT HAS BEEN SOME TIME SINCE I HAVE CHECK ON THIS SITE. IT IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO REMEMBER AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF 303rd. I KNOW FRED WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY PROUD OF THIS. THE PICTURES ARE A GREAT WAY TO KEEP THEM ALWAYS WITH US. THIS IS A WAY FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT FRED DID AS A WAIST GUNNER ON HELL'S ANGELS, SINCE THEY WERE NEVER ABLE TO KNOW HIM. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE WONDERFUL SITE.

It's wonderful to see this site and it's memorials to our heroes; they saved the world. My brother both found a photo here of dad's plane and also posted his POW photo on the site. Thanks for all your dedication. Hope more families will keep alive the memories of those who gave theirs.
Lois Brown --- itsloisrochester.rr.com --- 25 Sep 07 - Pittsford, New York
My dear brother, HOWARD WEINBERG, is listed among the dead on these pages. I posted a letter to all of you [303rd Guest Comments (16 January 2001 - 30 April 2001)] in which my email address was incorrectly copied. It should have been itsloisrochester.rr.com. [I had been wondering why only one of you reached me!] Please read that letter, and see if it resonates with you. My memory of Howie no longer bears a face, so long has he been gone. There is just this yearning that still comes over me when I feel him, rather than see him, as he used to be.

[note: Lois' original message follows]

My big brother, 2nd Lt. Howard George Weinberg, a bombardier, (427th Melvin Alderman Crew) was lost on his first mission, to Leipzig on April 6, 1945. There was a horrific mid-air collision on the way to the target, and both B-17s went down, both crews were killed. Howie was 23 years old. In one month the war in Europe would be over.

I was 11 at the time of his death, the baby of the family. My next brother was 7 years older than I, my sister 10 years older, and Howie 12. Of all of them, it was Howie I adored. Howie was sweet, funny, gorgeous, sentimental, slender, 6'5-1/2" tall, athletic, popular, a charmer with the girls, the perfect son, the perfect brother. When he was home, our house was barely big enough to hold him. There was always noise, the radio turned up loud, music playing, his big friends dropping by. When I had to be dragged off to bed at night, the house would still be ringing with jollity, my lullaby.

We were blessed with parents who not only loved each other and were each other's best friends, but who loved us and were our best friends as well. They were happy, we were happy. It was truly a magical household. When I went to the movies, I thought those happy families up there on the screen were like my family, and not the other way around.

Before we were prepared for it, war came to our house. Howie left Columbia University to join up. He wrote, "Dad, I enlisted today. I want to finish the job you started in 1917." Imagine. My sister accelerated at college, spending even her summers there, to finish in three years; my other brother was sent to a naval prep school (Dad arranged that, hoping he would go from there to Annapolis, which would draw out the time before he might have to serve overseas). I was alone. No more lullabies.

For the next couple of years, we lived in a sort of limbo, waiting for the war to come to its climax. As young as I was, I knew as well as anybody what might happen to Howie. And then the telegram arrived bringing the terrible news. Our lives had changed forever. Our family never recovered from losing Howie. I can't imagine how my parents dealt with it; they never talked about Howie's death in my presence. My sister escaped her grief by getting married and moving as far away as she could from home. My remaining brother completely dissociated himself from the family; I don't even know where he lives today. Mother remarked to me once that he was as much a victim of the war as Howie. I imagine now she meant he was struggling with a penetrating guilt that Howie was the one taken, not he.

A few years ago, after my own children were educated and out of the house, my husband and I bought my family's old summer property. In restoring it, I began remembering things that I had not thought about in years, events that bound me emotionally to the place. I wrote down these remembrances, and I published them in a national magazine. Strangely, there was a huge hole in the text, the part about having had two brothers and a sister.

I began to realize that Howie's death actually had shattered our family. I decided that would be my next big writing project, but having been so much the youngest, and not having been allowed in on anyone's grief, I simply did not understand enough. Both Mom and Dad had died. My remaining brother had disappeared. And my sister had nailed shut the door to her past. So I turned to Howie. I had all of his old letters, and in transcribing them into my computer I was able to witness his transformation from a carefree young collegian into a serious soldier. With the help of my U.S. Senator, I collected packets of material from various military archival sources. I learned exactly how Howie died, that he was buried and dug up twice near where the two B-17s went down, and that he was interred with honor in Liege, Belgium at the military cemetery there. [My young husband and I visited Liege in 1955. When we were conducted to Howie's grave and left alone there to ponder, I cried -- not only for missing Howie, but because no one in our family had witnessed the ceremony that had laid him to rest.]

I have two sons who are intensely interested in my quest for Howie. One of them discovered the 303rd web site. I believe the day will come when someone will post a picture of Howie's fated crew. I wonder, will Howie appear serious, or will he be giving that sly smile of his that always meant he was up to something. Perhaps someone in the 427th remembers Howie, though he was in England only a few days before his mission. I sign this, Howie's little sister, Lois Brown

Mark Schulstad --- mschulstadtheyachtcenter.com --- 25 Sep 07 - Annapolis, Maryland
I have been on your site for several years. My uncle is Lewis M. Schulstad who now lives in Seattle. He turned 90 this year. He was the pilot for "Beats Me" 360th BG. This is a great site and I hope to use it to help my children learn about the war and the many sacrifices that were made by so many. There are many stories in here and I hope to share it with many. I find this site invaluble to document/preserve the true cost of keeping the world free.. The stories we will never really know about are from the many that never came home. keep up the great work.
Rich Ketner --- mepengyearthlink.net --- 24 Sep 07 - Dillsburg, PA
Most importantly, a capital KUDOS to all who worked the 2007 reunion. It was wonderful and I hated to leave! I'm not going to try to list everyone's name for fear of missing someone, but a big thanks to Eddie Deerfield for his oratory skills and coordination of events. It is hard to describe how special this event was. One thing that I meant to do was post a note on the board to see if anyone knows the whereabouts of some of the men who flew with my father Will Ketner in the 359th. Unfortunately, I'm not certain they all stayed together in the Group. Specifically, Grover Mohn, John McColl, Will Metsopolus, Tom Drennan, Joe Geary, Harrison Cutter, and Glenn Sears. If anyone has an information, please post or email- Thank you.

I just read Hal Susskind's comments about Lt.Barrat's crash at Eisenberg Germany Feb. 9th 1945. I was at the ceremony, and heard his speech Sept.25th. 1993. I revisited the memorial site two years ago,the memorial stone is still there. My wife and I stayed at the same hotel, we all stayed, in 1993. Ushi still owns it. I was the only survivor of this crash. I hope that Hal can get this info. George

I am currently working on a model of a B-17G and am planning to use markings for Thunderbird. I retired from the Tn Air Guard in 2006. I was asked to build a model of a 91st B.G. aircraft called Yankee Gal for a retiring General and have wanted to build one for me. I was doing some research when I was told that one of our pilots from my early years with the 134th Air Refueling Wing flew Thunderbird during the war. I really liked him and thought it would be a nice tribute to an old friend.

My father-in-law, Sgt. John M. Graves, served in the 427th BS. He was in Thomas W. Richardson's crew. I am trying to locate anyone who served on that crew with him. If you can provide names, telephone numbers, emails and/or addresses, it would be greatly appreciated.
James Crooke III --- jcrookeiiiaol.com --- 20 Sep 07 - Baker Florida
Found some incorrect information concerning 2nd Lt. Richard Clemenson's crew. My Father, 2nd Lt. James J Crooke Jr. flew on all 3 missions. He also has a picture of the crew. The missions were also listed incorrectly--correct missions were 238, 239, 241. They were shot down on the last.
Donna Louise Godwin --- llamadonnaatt.net --- 19 Sep 07 - Placerville , California
My father was S/Sgt. Harold E. Godwin tail gunner on the B-17 Hells Angels. I am so proud of the fact he was a part of this great crew, and I can view this incredible web-site. I have an amazing scrapbook, as well as medals and clothing he wore. Binoculars, diary etc. He passed away Jan. 19, 1990 but the stories, spirit and great sense of humor my father passed on are timeless. "Bird Dog" was a member of the squadron he spoke of fondly, as well as "Rod" and Capt. Baldwin. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to honor of my father again.

First of all, you have an outstanding website. First class! Excellent job!

I am on the Board of Trustees of the 16th Cavalry Association, a group of WWII veterans, members of the 16th and 19th Cavalry Regiments of Pattons 3rd Army in Europe. My father is one of them. I am a volunteer from the DC area that assists them. Great news! We are having our reunion in Washington at the same time that you are having yours! We are at the same hotel! You WWII Memorial Service is on Saturday morning and ours is at 3PM in the afternoon. Our President is Rudy Dovale. I hope that our President can have the honor of meeting your President and possibly having a drink together during the reunion. We are now a small, but spirited group. At this event we have about 20 Cav vets and 30 family members. We look forward to bumping into you over the weekend and maybe swapping a few war stories! Sincerely, Bob Chadwick

I was stationed at RAF Molesworth (1987-1988) when it was a Ground Launch Cruise Missile base (303 Tactical Missile Wing). I knew it was an old airfield from WWII, flying the B-17, but had no idea of the history. There was some old structures left, some hangars, and an ancient looking weapons storage area with bunkers. I wish the military would have told us more about the history of the base when I was there.

Richard Walker --- teachndickyahoo.com --- 13 Sep 07 - Olympia, WA
There are two reasons i am contacting you:
1) My stepfather, Charles Swank flew aboard the b-26's used for raids into France. He arrived shortly after the outbreak of the war and was stationed somewhere in England. There isn't much written about the B-26 efforts; mostly articles about the B-17s and the fighters. I would be interested in contacting crewmembers of the B-26s and also, finding out from what airfields they flew.

2) I am interested in the history of the ferry pilots that flew the bombers from stateside to England. I would especially like to know if any lady pilots (WASPs) participated in the ferry operations, and, would greatly appreciate a point of contact if you have one.

Old Warriors

In their eyes, A thousand skies
Where furling flags of freedom fly
Faces old, the story's told
In lines and creases, within the folds.

A lifetime ago, it must have seemed
So far away, More like a dream,
Or maybe a nightmare if you asked them,
Remembering all, of what has been.

They say to us, 'Why won't we learn'?
from all of history that's been burned
into the pages of countless books,
you'd think we'd take the time to look.
To learn from it, and not repeat
what comes from things so dark and bleak.

Many times, I asked my dad,
So was it, really, all that bad?
Tossing and turning in his sleep
After so many years,
He still won't speak

Of the things he saw and did and said
Memories never far from his head
Or from his heart, or on his mind
The visions that are never kind.

Their warrior souls have now grown old
Holding memoirs, never told.
The things they did to keep us free
To hold on to democracy,
To help the world, to keep us safe
To keep aggression in its' place.

So when we see them on the street,
Shuffling along on tired feet,
Dim eyesight, and ears gone bad,
We whisper softly, 'That's my dad.'

To all our dads, who went before,
To keep us from the hell of war.
They can't begin to know the pride,
A hero in our mind and eyes.

So, thank you, for your loyalty
To God, and country, to keep us free.
The worlds a better place, you see,
Because of what you did for me.

Here's to all of the bold brave men
Of the 303rd, both now, ….and then,
For all you've done, and all you are,
May your planes fly high, among the stars.

On that last flight, the final test,
The one you'll make, before you rest,
I hope you know…You are the best!
On wings of eagles, with Angel guides,
Through Heaven's gates, may you arrive.

I Would just like to thank all the members of the 303rd for all their efforts under extreme circumstances and for never backing down when it counted. My grandfather recently deceased was evacuated from the Channel Isles on the last ship to England prior to the invasion by the Nazis. Arriving in England he was sent to Northamptonshire to work for the Air Ministry where he was stationed at Molesworth with the 303rd as an electrician, also having some responsibility for Polbrook and surrounding fake runways. I and my family would love to hear from anyone who remembers Claude Stanley Le Feuvre. Thanks again Alain

I was assigned to RAF Molesworth when it became the Joint Analysis Center. Lots of fond memories and, more ironically, I went to Tech School w/ Capt. Werner Goering's Grandson, Kurt, at Ft Devens, MA in the spring of 1991. I'm very proud of being a part of the on-going legacy of the 303rd and proudly show my daughter the painting of "Thunderbird" at the National Air and Space Museum; telling her, "Your Daddy lived in the same place that the brave men in that airplane lived." MIGHT IN FLIGHT! AIR POWER!

I was looking for information on the USO Club "Rainbow Corner". My uncle, PFC John F. Boose was a member of the 110th Field Artillery, 29th Infantry Division. He was also a boxer and won a large semi-pro fight at Rainbow Corner. When he died last year, the belt he won was at the funeral home with several photos of him during the war. He was also with his two brothers-in-law, Tech Sgt. Harry Green and Cpl. David Green. They later landed on Omaha Beach and made it to Germany and back home. 8/27/07: Dear Karen and Ed: I came upon the 303rd Bomb Group web site rather recently and with the help of my niece, Erin, found your post regarding Wilbur V. Gee, Jr. My mother was engaged to Will back in 1944. If he had lived, I would not be here, or maybe I would be...but my last name would be Gee. However, his legacy lives on in my mom's mementoes and in my heart. I had the opportunity to go through a B-17 just yesterday at the local airport. The "Aluminum Overcast" was at Caldwell Airport, in NJ and I got a first hand tour of the outside and interior of the plane Will flew ( http://www.b17.org/ ). It is a beautifully restored B-17G Flying Fortress, a beautiful example of the American heavy bomber that helped turn the tide of battle in World War II. I just recently completed reading Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany (Hardcover) by Donald L. Miller (Author). It's a fantastic book for anyone interested in the true story of what our boys endured in the air war against Germany. I highly recommend it. Attached are some pictures and mementoes from my mom's collection of Will memorabilia. I hope it is of interest to you. Maybe it will fill in some blanks of your uncle's history. Anything you can send back would be greatly appreciated. My mom passed away two years ago and I only wish I could have had this information to share with her. I tried tracking current NJ adresses for the Gee family, but had no luck. Looks like my luck has turned...a little late, but better late than never. Warmest regards, Gary Boysen Fairfield, NJ

GITZHOFER --- matgitzhoferwanadoo.fr --- 22 Aug 07 - Metz [France]
Hello, My name is Mathieu Gitzhofer, french boy (22 years old) living in Metz (East of France). I'm the webmaster of http://www.IronMenofMetz.new.fr. It's a French website designed to preserve the history of the U.S. 95th Infantry Division (The Iron Men of Metz) and to honor the memory of the veterans of this 95th. The website is focused on the fighting in and around Metz and contains a nice collection of Then-and-Now photos. The website is available in both French and English. I'm in contact with many veterans of this division and I joined them at their annual reunion last July in Oklahoma City, OK. I just obtained 10 pictures about a bombing drop over Metz. I had no information about te date, the unit, except the RAF and US Army stamples on the back of the pictures. After some researchs, I founded on the website a Report of a mission of the 303rd BG(H) (Number 270) and saw the PDF file on this website. In fact, I have the same picture of the bomb strike on Metz that you show.. I saw that at this mission, the B-17F #42-29947 was used as an observer aircraft, with 320BS Formation. Crewing were US and british soldiers. Perhaps that's why I have the 2 stamples (RAF and USAAF) on each picture... I would like to be sure if the picture publish in your pdf file was taken on Nov 9, 1944 ? If you want to see the other pictures that I have, I'll send you copies. It's bombing drops over train station and Airport around Metz. I would like to know if some members of this operation are still alive ?If Yes, I urge them to contact me to do an interview of their testimonies, and to do a "big report" with their histories and the pictures that I have now.. Thank you for your reply, Sincerely, Mathieu GITZHOFER

My grandfather, Allen Ipsen, flew with the 359th squadron during October 1944-April 1945 and has left a legacy of courage and faith as a result of his dedicated service. I've begun making a film documenting his wartime experiences and especially his time while flying combat missions. I would be very interested if anyone out there knows my grandfather and could share any stories or experiences about him. I'm also looking for any Fortress equipment and supplies (and an actual B-17 for that matter) to use in a few reenacted scenes I wish to shoot. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks to the people who maintain this site for all of the helpful information.

William Lusk Allen --- wla6qwest.net --- 10 Aug 07 - Gilbert Arizona
My uncle was Don W. Lusk who served as the bombardier on "Leapin' Liz", and was just begining his combat flying late in 1942. On January 23, 1943 his squadron had the mission of bombing the submarine pens at St. Nazaire. I have the after- action report and no parachutes were noted as the stricken B-17 crashed into the sea. I'm not sure where I heard this, but the mission was a tough one what with the weather, the German fighters and the flak. It was elected by his parents to have his remains stay in France--he is buried at Epinal along with three other 303d members.

I know that Casebolt's first assignment was with the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron but have few other details. Simon Frazier --- wolfdogonehotmail.com --- 03 Aug 07 - Brittany, France
I was repairing the wall of my old farmhouse in central Brittany, France and found a quantity of 50 machine gun rounds, 9mm rounds and 303 ammunition which had fallen into cracks in the stone wall. I also found a hose clip that I identified as being from an American aircraft of WW2 vintage. I was fortunate enough to get an eye witness account of the crashlanding of a 4 engined plane in the field next to the house, which I believe to be B17 41-24603 GREEN HORNET. The old gentleman gave an enthusiastic account of the escape of some of the crew from the local hospital and subsequently back to England. Those who remember the war years here still have great admiration for the airmen who helped liberate France. I would be most interested to hear if any accounts of the crew of the GREEN HORNET exist.

Hi I am currently setting up a web site for RAF Davidstow Moor, Cornwall, England. It was first used by the USAAF 8th Bomber Command for their early raids to the Uboat pens on the French coast in late 1942 early 43. As the 303rd B.G. was one of those taking part in these raids, I would like to find out more of those early days. Does the 303rd Association have access to the squadrons dailies from those years, orknow where I might access them. I feel it important that such history should not fade or be forgotten. Thanks for a great web site it has inspired me to better things. Hope someone can help. Thank you Rod Knight

I just came across your site. Thanks for doing so much research and finding the photos. My Uncle 'Curley' (AKA Lindy to y'all) Lindewall brought me to see his airplane when I was just a little girl and I still remember him lifting me through the bomb door. He didn't speak much about the tour of duty he had to endure and I can understand why. What a wonderful website. I am a niece of the ball turret gunner from Thomas L. Moore's crew, Frederick Kohan. We never knew the story of his last mission, and my mom,Fred's sister, who is 87 years old, never knew that he was recovered from the B-17 after it was shot down. She knew that he was buried in Belgium but not exactly where. Mom said that Lt. Moore and his co-captain did write to my grandparents after they were released as POW.s and that was comforting to them to hear from them about my uncle. Thank you so much for the dedication to everyone who contributed to this website. How comforting for us to have stories to tell to family because of your dedication to your comrades and friends. Thank you so much. It would be wonderful to find out if anyone from the crew is still alive today. I would love to hear from them and see if anyone remembers my uncle.

In response to "Rosanna Goode "10 Jul 00 - IL", the John W Le Stonga that you have mentioned is in fact the one in the picture on this site. My grandfather, John W Le Stonga has told many that he flew B-17's during the war, but in fact was only trained as a radio operator. He never saw service and was only stationed for a few months before the war ended, and I dont believe he ever left the country as his military records (public records) show. He is the only John Le Stonga to live in Galena, Il. I am one of the three remaining Le Stonga men, so I do know this information to be factual.

My dad, Fulton Meyer, was a proud member of the 303rd. He was the oldest member, by far, of his crew and was nicknamed "Pop" by those with whom he flew. My Dad died in 1994. Without doubt, the friendships he found in the 303rd remained the strongest and truest of his life. My mother, who attended 303rd reunions with my dad for many years, recently moved from the home they bought shortly after the War. As I was going through his files and memorabilia, I happened to find a small notebook. It was in good shape, but it was old, I could tell. I had never seen it and when I opened it, in my dad's precise, masculine handwriting was a capsule description of each raid he flew. In stark detail, he told of the flak, the cold, the incredible view as the bombs fell and, yes, even watching a Flying Fortress go down in flames next to them. This tiny notebook told me more than my stoic dad ever did. Sacrifice, valor, bravery, duty...I think of these words when I think of him and when I think of those who were with him high above the clouds, winging their way back home to Molesworth.

Letter to My Dad - Father's Day 2007

Dear Dad,

Remember when you took me on my first airplane ride? We flew across Oregon in a DC-3. I was only 9 years old and will never forget that special time with you and my brother. I didn’t know then it was a DC-3, but figured it out years later. It was a bumpy ride that was new to me and I’m sure you recall how I made good use of the barf bag.

Remember the 15 cent hamburgers at Dee’s Drive-in? Once in a while you would take the family out for a cheap meal and I always complained about not getting enough to eat. Once you said, “We’re not leaving until Gary has had enough.” As I finished a hamburger, you’d give me 15 cents to go buy another. I ate 5 hamburgers that day and you had the money out for a 6th, but I couldn’t do it. I never complained about being hungry again.

Remember when I was 15 years old and asked you if I could have that old, battered leather jacket you kept in a plastic bag in the basement closet? I didn’t know then that it was an A-2 and that it was so valuable to you. You reluctantly agreed and I proudly wore my new jacket out that evening. As I walked home, I remember thinking that I have no business wearing this jacket. There was something special about it and it needed to be saved. When I got home, I returned it to you. That was one of the few smart things I did as a teenager. That jacket is now preserved for the ages in the Hill Air Force Base Museum.

I am sure you remember the corner on the back road behind the Salt Lake Airport that you named “Gary’s Corner.” It was there I learned the hard way that you cannot turn a square corner at 40 miles per hour. That was memorable driving lesson, for both of us. Sadly, “Gary’s Corner” is gone now due to the expansion of the airport, but it remains famous in Moncur lore.

I remember you usually called our driveway at home the “runway.” Remember when I drove in pretty fast and crooked as a teenager and you told me it looked like I had come is for a Chinese Landing? I laughed, but had no idea what you meant. It was 35 years later when I learned a Chinese Landing was “One Wing Low.” I still smile at that.

Remember the time that I .... no, lets not remember that one. Some things are best forgotten.

I remember when I realized you were human and were not perfect. You were afraid I would think less of you, but it was just the opposite. I admired you even more and was even more proud to be your son. We became even closer after that.

Remember the long talks we had about Mom and the strange ways she was acting? We didn’t understand what was going on, but you stood by her. It was some time after you were gone that we discovered the medical problems she had been facing for years. Now we all understand and forgiveness is easy. Thanks for not walking away and for keeping the family together.

Remember climbing through the B-17 Sentimental Journey with me and my son Matthew? Matt was only 11, but we both remember it clearly. You were so weak and frail and we were so concerned. The tears in your eyes as you looked into the cockpit spoke volumes. It was only 4 months later that we lost you.

Thanks for the countless rides to the airport to watch planes take-off and land. Thanks for instilling in me your love of airplanes. Thanks for talking about some of your experiences during the war. I know it was difficult for you and maybe more difficult for Mom. There were a lot of bad memories mixed with the good. Thanks for your service to our country. I am very proud to be the one son who also served his country.

A lot has happened since you’ve been gone, but I am sure you are aware of it all. You have a large posterity that you can be very proud of. That simple little journal you kept of your 28 combat missions started an avalanche of records and information now available to the entire world. Sometimes I think you are more involved in preserving the history of the 303rd Bomb Group than you were in helping to make it.

Remember when you said your life history could be written inside a match book cover? Oh how wrong you were! For that I am eternally grateful.

I love you Dad and miss you very much and I know that we will all be together again. And someday, in the Lord’s due time, we’ll all have another grand 303rd Bomb Group reunion. The bonds of love and friendship formed in this life will last forever.

Love, Gary

Looking for anyone who served with SSgt. Billie E. Green of Odessa, MO. He was killed in a plane crash in England on April 25, 1944. I am trying to find out the exact company in which he served and if anyone knows if his body was recovered and/or where he is buried. This information is for a Memorial Day tribute page we run in our newspaper every year.

I stumbled on to your website while doing some heavy procrastinating at work. The stories and photos of 303rd (the men, the missions, and the aircraft) are truly remarkable. I was amazed to see how young most of the flight and ground crews were at that time. I am 32 years old, and it makes me sad that many of my peers have forgotten the sacrifice that was made by American soldiers during WWII. For what it’s worth…I would like to thank all the 303rd (to those still with us and those who have past). And thanks for operating this website. As long as I’m alive they will not be forgotten! Best Regards, Dustin

A picture of Albert hung in Fritz’s living room for as long as I can remember. I knew that Albert had been killed in the war, but now that I have learned that he was shot down over Hamburg, I would like to know more about the mission and the crew he flew with. If anyone could please give me some more information on mission #53 and the last flight of Al’s plane, “Butch” I would appreciate it. Sincerely, Sherman Bucheger SSG. U.S. Army Retired

I can’t thank the men and women of WWII Enough. Ever since I attended the National WWII Memorial dedication in 2004, and met so many WWII veterans, I have been collecting stories from WWII veterans. During this time I have also made a video in honor of all who served during WWII. The video showcases different WWII Museums and Memorials and is set to some big band and WWII era songs. The hopes of this video are not only to thank each of you, but to also present a couple of places you may not have had the chance to visit yet, while listening to some wonderful music. This video is FREE, you pay nothing, however I would appreciate any written stories or copied pictures anyone would like to share. Whether it is one page or 300 pages, anything at all would be wonderful, and I will pay for the postage. Email: Scott@theramseys.org Thank you Please contact me with any questions. Scott Ramsey WWII Interviews I also want to thank this 303rd website for allowing me to post my message. I have heard from one or two WWII veterans from this site and am looking forward to hearing from others.

My father-in-law, Harvie Collins, was an orginal crew member on the 303rd's SNAP! CRACKLE! POP! (124620) His plane was chosen as the centerpiece of a large mural that was recently dedicated at the 8th Air Force Museum in Savannah, GA. They were trying to get the "nose art" from the plane that has been in France where it was shot down in Jan. 1943. Does anyone know if that has happened? I'm doing research on US military units -- air, airborne, naval, and ground that were involved with the D-Day invasion and the German units that defended the German shore batteries at Azeville and Saint Marcouf on the east coast of the Cotentin Peninsula -- Utah Beach. The 303rd BG / 427th BS bombed the Azeville batteries on June 5th -- so I'm tracking what base they came from, how they got to Normandy, how the mission went, and how they got back home.

My grandfather just passed away this weekend and I was looking on the internet for any information I could find that would fill in some of the blank spots of his life while in the military. He didn't speak of his experience often. His name was Richard T. Blomberg and flew with the JOHN L. CATHEY CREW - 358th BS. He was shot down and put into a prison camp so it was difficult for him to recount things due to the emotion it would surface. It was hard to ask the questions we hoped to have answered because it was hard to see him relive the memories. Our family just cherished the few times that he opened up for a few moments at a time and gave us a short story on occasion. This website was exactly what I was looking for and I am so happy that people put in the time and effort to make this exist. Thank you very much you have no idea what a positive feeling I had when I found this.

An excellent site. It is important to have this sort of record of the men who went off to fight, their equipment, tactics, and their histories. It is sad that time has taken its toll on those who served in WWII. Your group fought in the European Theater, but I can tell you that many Chinese have warm memories of American servicemen. That generation here is fading away too. The difference is that they teach their children and grandchildren the stories of the war and those keep the memory alive. Robert L. McMahon --- rmcmahon1patmedia.net --- 30 April 07 - Hillsborough, NJ
Just a word to pay my respects and compliments. Throughout my life (almost 48 and a former Marine) I have always been a fan of the "Mighty 8th" and their exploits, trials and sacrifices; one of my top favorite films has always been "12 O'Clock High". This website is a great tribute and is an immense source of American history. I'm recommending this website to my son's HS for future reference and assignments. Truly this is some of the best military history I have seen online. Great work Gary! Semper Fi, Bob McMahon

We were referred to your site by Mr. Neal Burdette, Jr. I met Neal at the YMCA where he exercises more often than I do! He graciously agreed to me with me and my 12 year old son, Fitz, who is interested in WWII. Neal told stories and made a file of pictures for my son to keep! We look forward to visiting here often. Sincerely, Jane Dodds

I am following in his footsteps as a Navigator in the USAF. I echo all of my fathers (Stephen Thomas) earlier comments and would like to tell all the ground crew and aircrew, you are in the cockpit everytime I fly. Proud to be a legacy of the Hell's Angels. Dan Thomas, USAF, Capt.
BILL HELLER --- wheller3cox.net --- 27 April 07 - Las Vegas, NV
For Kim Flood, anent Sam Tyler of the 360th. I was his Commanding Officer and knew him well. A good pilot and a good soldier. Later, after the war some FIFTY years later, I met him again when he attended a QB (Quiet Birdmen) meeting, in San Francisco. We had a good old time reunion. Cheers, BILL HELLER, 360th CO. Mark Steinhauer --- mark.steinhauerdegussa.com --- 26 April 07 - Canada
Gary, I have really enjoyed your web site and appreciate the tremendous amount of work it must have taken to pull something like this together. While I have no family that was a member of the 303rd I am going through a similar discovery process for my Grandfather's cousin who was a pilot of a Halifax bomber lost in 1942. The veterans I have met have made it all worth while as they really appreciate the fact that someone is interested in what they accomplished and the sacrifices they made. Thanks again, Mark
Sebastian --- Hellfighter3300aol.com --- 26 April 07 - Bullay / Germany
Hey 303rd Bomb Group Association, I´m from Germany and very interested in the WWII. I was very happy to see some information about the flights on our bridge here. It was Mission 292 of the 358th on December 23 in 1944. 42 Bombers came over here and try to destroy the bridge but they didnt. So in the year 1945 on February 10th a group of 4 Thunderbolts destroyed it. In memorial to ALL soldiers, pilots and all others who lost their lifes in WWII. We will keep them in our Hearts. Greetings from Germany Sebastian
Helen Goens --- helengoenscox.com --- 23 April 07 - Williamsburg VA
O.T. Eisenhart was my cousin. We called him Tommy to prevent confusion as he was named after his father. I did some research on this and understand that he is buried in Nancy,France. He was the son of Oliver T. Eisenhart who was one of sixteen children of Oliver and Louisa Eisenhart of Horseheads, NY. Oliver and Louisa had 11 sons that all fought in WWII. O.T. Eisenhart, the airman you mention, was adopted by my grandparents and went to war with his 11 uncles. All 11 of my uncles made it safely home, but cousin Tommy, as we called him, did not.

Chris Kilbridge --- gabespalcomcast.net --- 20 April 07 - Weymouth, MA
I am reading "Half a Wing, Three Engines, and a Prayer" now, following the experiences of Bob Hullar's crew during their tour with the 303rd. My generation (born in the '60's, grew up watching Saturn V launches) are much indebted to the sacrifices of the 303rd and other crews of the Army Air Force. Would like to be there to express same at your final reunion. God Bless You.

I am extremely distressed to report that a fine man and great Co-Pilot has on April 18, 2007, left us. 2ndLT Peter Schaafsma has taken his last flight from this earth. He was doing what he so loved on his ranch and collapsed and expired suddenly. From all his family, friends and admirers, we wish him God speed.

Outstanding web page. The person or persons who initiated this should get an award. Being a ww2 history buff I find it fascinating. All high school students should be made aware of this information. It is a shame more people do not know the history and the heroes of the 8th Air Force. Thanks a bunch. Dave Coburn --- david.coburn1ntlworld.com --- 18 April 07 - Hampshire, England
I feel like an interloper because the info I seek is so incidental to your web-site which in itself is quite a slice of history! In February 1944 I began my army career with a 3 yr apprenticeship I recall an American magazine ( from memory I was sure the ' Saturday Evening Post ') with cover illustration from a painting depicting RAF and USAF aircrew relaxing in an English pub...... beaming faces firelit from a roaring fire, foaming tankards of ale, good humour / bon homie.......a true Norman Rockwell choice of subject !........Only the Sat Evening Post.....and Curtis Publishing categorically state there is no such record in their archives.......I want to obtain a print. Sadly my service was Army ( but had it's moments ).......prior to which many of us used to watch dogfights high over greater London on the way to school , the Flight magazine and The Aeroplane were our text books for ' homework '... we were pretty sharp on aircraft recognition ' friend and foe ! ' It would be good were you able point at the source of the picture I seek ! I wish God's Speed to all 303rd BG family members still trying to fill gaps !
Paul Galjard Sr. --- 303rdbgcplanet.nl --- 18 April 07 - Netherlands
This is one of the best and most interesting war group page's on the web that i found. If it's all right with the 303rdbg i can translate this page in Dutch for you, but it takes a lot of time i think. I be born in 1961 but was all ways interested in ww2, and my 17 year old son who become a soldier next year share it with me. Paul Sr. and Paul Jr
Linda Christi Sumarlidason --- LinSu4uJuno.com --- 17 April 07 - Margate FL USA
LT. Arni L. Sumarlidason of Crew # 22, Hells Angels was my father. I have a great picture of the training outfit in Pyote Texas taken July 20th, 1943. I would like to know the names of the others in the photo. My father is the only one I know. It has the number (CPR-107-1-303) (20-7-43) He passed away on 12/08/2003 on Grand Cayman Island. He never talked much about his wartime experiences, but I know they meant a lot to him. He quite often would look at his scrapbook at night when the rest of the family had gone to bed. The last reunion he attended was in San Diego California where unfortunately he fell and broke his hip. The first 80 years of his live he lived the way he wanted. The last three years of his life were not the best after suffering from parkinsons and losing his mobility. However I am very glad that this wonderful web-site exists so that I can learn of those times and his valient partners in flight. His only son Arni Jr passed away in Texas but his grandson Arni III and his granddaughter Arlene Sumarlidason are alive and well. Their home is in Alabama.
Karla Ott --- kaotransaol.com --- 15 April 07 - Elkhart, IN
My Father, LeRoy F. Ott was a pilot/co-pilot in the 452nd Bomb Group, 728 Squadron, then 729th, based out of Deopham Green, England. Do have some info. from that time. Just wondering if anyone has anymore stories from that time. He really did not talk talk much about his experiences. I do know that he was involved in some food drops also. One of the planes was called "Miss America" I believe. He passed away in 2001, so am trying to keep all the memories for further generations. Thank you for any help.
