Hi,
I'm trying to find any information about a B-17 that crashed in Fairfax, Marin County CA, in the late 1940's. It was trying to land at Hamilton AFB. Thanks, Brent

I am looking for anyone who served with my uncle Alexander "ollie" Grieb. He was a gunner for the 303rd in WWII. He is MIA and any information about him would be greatly appreciated. My Dad is the
only living member left in his family and looking for any connection to his older brother. Thank you. Marla

Site is very informative and very well kept.
I am looking for a bomber that I witnessed breaking the formation on aug 15th 1944 and dropping its bombs near a flak train. They returned early to base thus the action has been filed in a aborted
mission report. My location and timing was: around noon on the south side of the river Schelde near dutch/belgium border. Any info on the flight plans of mission "554" could be of help. Also RAF was
active in dealing with Luftwaffe night fighter bases in Holland and Belgium but I have read reports that crews of the 8Th USAAF saw them at "work" when they returned from Germany which is an
indication to me that the RAF was not in the wave flying East around noon. I would appreciate any help or suggestions, regards jaap geensen

alive? If so, I would like to correspond. Best, Carter Manierre

I came to this site because Frank Kulesa of the 360th crew under Lt. Stallings was a Cass Tech high school class mate of my dad's in Detroit Mighigan. Frank somehow found my dad and called him up and then wrote a nice letter with a card showing the 360th and clued dad onto the web site. I knew it must have been something special, but did not know how special until I checked out the site. I have
printed out some pages to show my dad. I feel honored to have even that remote connection to the 303rd and will pass the web site info on to my sons. My father was in the Navy in the war, working on
the design of airplanes. Thank you so much Frank for looking up my dad and sending us the info. Adrienne King

I found your page while looking for information on my father's service. His name is John A. (Jack) Dougherty and he is now deceased. He was either a waist or ball turret gunner on a B-17 called Ol'
Ironsides and was shot down, captured and held in Stalag 17B. Anything anyone may have regarding my father;s service and time in Stalag 17B would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance. I
have a caricature of him as the camp lightweight boxing champ drawn by Don Bevan. I would be happy to scan it and send it to anyone who may be interested.

Just wanted to let you know that my father, Lawrence J. Briody, passed away yesterday, Monday, November 22, 2004. He was a 2Lt, (CP)(2) and flew with the 359th Magee Crew. He returned his crew to safety, back to Molesworth, in the very last bomb run of the 303rd Bomb Group after shrapnel from an 88mm round shattered pilot, Jack R. Magee's right arm and elbow.

I googled Yale Lasker to see if there was any reference to him at all. I was pleasantly happy to get the results I did. Yale and I used to fly r/c planes in Mile Square Regional Park, Santa Ana, CA.
He told me many stories about his bombing days. He being Jewish, had to carry two sets of dogtags; Jewish and Presbyterian. Hahah! I guess I never really appreciated the fact that he DID all the
things he told me, and I never had a real clue that he had been in such danger. His kindness as a human and friend always was primary in life to him, and is so in my recollections of him now. He never
let his financial status show, and he presented himself as a good-guy to all. I truly miss his association, and if or wherever he is, I wish him well and happiness. He was a very good friend. If any
one wants to know about the "boom-ing" at the Army Air Corps Station, let me know..I have it from the horse's mouth!

My family is extremely grateful for the work you have done to put the information and photographs on this website. These are the only photographs of our uncle Szymon A. Friedman during the war we
have ever seen. Our uncle was a gunner who went on 36 missions and died on 6/12/44 with the Eisele Crew. My grandfather rescued his youngest brother from Krakow Poland in 1939. S/Sgt. Szymon Friedman was in the 303 ground crew in England until his last 9 months when he became a gunner. His letters say how proud he was to become a gunner and about his wish to stay in the 303rd as long as he could. I want to preserve your photos of our Uncle so I sent a link to your website to the Jewish Museum in Washington and one in Israel. Your photo of our Uncle confirms for me all of the great things our
family remembers about Szymon.

It was my privilege and pleasure to attend the Air Show at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. The
theme of the show was the memorial to the "Greatest Generation" and those who
participated in D-Day preparations and operations previous to D-Day. Being of the
"Greatest Generation" and having been in the 8th AF in the ETO, I was considered a
VIP and accorded many honors and plaudits by those who attended the Show. There
were five of us also who participated ad Marshals in the Veterans Day Parade here in
Vegas. One of the five was an old friend of mine from the 100th Bomb Group who just
happened to also have been the Best Man at my wedding in Manila, PI on 7 January of
1947.
During the festivities a veteran came up to me and said he knew me ... He was Harry F.
Jenkins from the 359th Squadron and was there during my tenure as Operations
Officer. He also asked about and remembered Bill Eisenhart.
Many of you had been invited to attend this greatest of all Air Shows in the Nation this
year. I am hopeful that some of you availed yourselves of that opportunity. It so happened
that the Air Show announcer was an old friend of mine, one Gordon Bowman-Jones, an
Aussie turned US Citizen. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance at the Thunderbird
Dinner to which we were invited. We are in good hands, folks. Our United States Air Force put on a superb flying and static show. They are your protection for all time. God Bless America

My father S/Sgt Josef R. Chudej (360th Lynch Crew) died in 1992. He would never talk about his missions or experiences and I would like to have some history about his unit, the missions they flew and any information on Joe himself. I would also like to know how to get hold of squadron patches and any other memorabilia. When he died my mother gave me all the memorabilia he had from the war. I've got some silk maps in excellent condition, different denominations of money taped together some medals and cards saying he saved his life by dingy and parachute. I, myself, am in the Air Force-22
years now-and I'd like to make avery nice shadow box as a tribute to my father and what he contributed to this great country. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

I visited Molesworth with a friend on a number of occasions early 1944 when we were a flight cadets waiting to be activated in the Royal Air Force. We were always made most welcome and were given the opportunity to fly in B-17's on air tests and practice bombing missions.
On one occasion Major (as he was then) Shayler took me for a flight in the Piper belonging to the Brig. General. I have warm memories of the 303rd. Best Wishes!

Re: Katy Stoulil Turner's message. Your uncle Don Stoulil was not only a great pilot and aircraft commander He still is a wonderful guy and you should be proud of him. I was his navigator and finished our tour on D-Day. After 61 years we are still close friends. Maybe someday we can get him down to Texas. Even though I was his navigator he kept us all on course.
After reading and listening to all the crap that was passed back and forth during the recent

Hi, I am currently researching an aircraft on behalf of a colleague whose father was a bombardier during WWII.
His plane is listed in your database and I think I can help you fill in some of the missing fields you have.
Your database reference is as follows:
42-30161 ---- ----- 16 Jun 43 To 95BG 17 Jun 43 MIA 06 Sep 43.
I can inform you that the aircraft's name was 'Cuddle Cat'.
It was piloted by John A Cabeen.
The aircraft was bought down by Flak over Stuttgart and the entire crew were taken as POW's.
While serving for the 95th BG, the aircraft was based at Horham, Station 119.
I hope this helps. My colleagues father was only temporarily assigned to this aircraft, and his original crew sadly were shot down and killed some time later. I am trying to establish the details of his original
aircraft and find details of the crew, but am unsure how to begin as the records only show the aircraft in which he was downed. Any suggestions? Many thanks, Matt

For the information of NIKKI HOLDCROFT as her message appears on our website,
please be advised that I was a barracks mate of LLOYD HOLDCROFT when he was in

First Pilot. He and his crew were well liked in our 20 - man barracks. I was there when
he was shot down. We missed him greatly. In later years, at reunions, I used to sit
and chat with LLOYD for hours. He was one of my favorites. He would be glad to know

I am writing up my recollections of WW2, as a schoolboy. My principal interest was in aeroplanes. I have record in a notebook of B-17 42-29524 'Meat Hound' landing at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset
either battle damaged or low on fuel. Weston was a relatively minor airport and the B-17's arrival caused quite a stir. A Lancaster used for sea weapon trials had to be moved from its normal spot to
facilitate this landing. This is must be among WW2's trivia but I'd be delighted to learn anything about the circumstance of the B-17's arrival, and indeed, of its subsequent fate.

My sister in law and husband found a picture of their dad, Donald J. Lanquist, Sr. on your website and I just wanted to let you know what it meant to them. Their Mom and Dad are both deceased and
they have very few pictures of them. They both got very excited when they found the picture. I was just wondering if there is any way to get a copy of the picture so we could have it framed for
them. Keep up the good work. You have a very special website.

All I ever knew about my Great Uncle Lloyd Holdcroft was that he was in the air force during WWII, and that his plane was shot down and he spent time in a POW camp. I didn't even know that he was a
pilot. Lloyd never spoke to the family about his experiences, and, sadly, he passed away several years ago. I have learned more about him from your website than I have ever heard in family
conversations, and I cannot thank you enough for putting this information out there. I have forwarded this web-address to my father and my grandfather (Lloyd's only surviving brother)and I know that
they will be very appreciative of the pictures and info. If anyone knew Lloyd, please feel free to email me at holdcroftnikki@hotmail.com . Again, I cannot thank you enough for your website!

I received a couple of photos from my cousin of a pair B17G

I have these photos scanned to my computer and could send

I am working on a WWII documentary and am on a tight schedule. If anyone out there can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a rundown of what I am doing:
I am currently doing a research for Broadview TV, a German based
documentary company. They do many documentaries about WWII, which air in
Germany and sometimes internationally on The History Channel. They are
currently working on a show about the Dresden bombing of February 14 &
15,1945. They will be interviewing people from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States that were involved in the Dresden bombing and other bombings that took place at the end of the war. I
think this will be a great show that will assist in the continuing efforts to document the lives of the people that have died for freedom.
I have been working on the research for the United States portion of this
show and I am looking for 3 types of people at the moment:
- One of the aspects Broadview TV would like to show is that the Germans
were not the only victims of the war - Americans also suffered. They would
therefore like to interview a family member (particularly a widow) of an Air
Force member that was shot down in February 1945 or later.
- An expert on the bombs that bombers dropped in WWII - especially
those used in the Dresden bombing (including incendiary bombs).
- Any American veterans that were involved in the Dresden bombing.
The one issue is that I am on a tight schedule. The crew will be arriving
around the first week in November to interview people.
Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Sir:
This is a superb website, I am glued! I "arrived" at this website because amongst some newspaper clippings of the war that I purchased in an auction in Virginia, were a Flight Ace cap, Pilot Flight
Record and Army Air Force's Graduation list from Navigation School for a Paul E. Towberman. When I entered his name into Google - I was led to your site and have been here for two hours!! Apparently,
he was a Lt. and had the position as Navigator for Goolsby's and Shoup's crew. There was also a two page listing from September 1943 to February 1944 of all the missions he was on. I tied these back to your website's list of missions! Thanks for the wonderful visit.

I was a navigator in the 379th Bomb Group from Nov 44 to April 45. I flew 30 missions but only 29 with the 379th. Our crew was loaned out to either the 384th or 303rd for one mission and I believe
it to be the Zeitz mission of Nov 30 44. My official combat mission record and Form 5 show that I was on that mission but the 379th has no record of me or the rest of my crew flying with them that
day. I thought we were bused over to the 384th, so I contacted their web site and they could find no record of me flying with them on that day, so I am contacting you to see if possibly I flew with
the 303rd on that day on the Zeitz mission. I am assuming that the group I flew with was in the 41st Wing. The pilots name was Patrick Donahoe. I would appreciate any info you can come up with.
Congratulations on the completeness and professionism of your web site. I have looked at a lot of them and yours is the best. Sincerely Alex DiSanto

I am a cousin of 2Lt Ewell Ross McCright of Benton, AR, bombardier aboard the B-17 #41-24567 ("Beats Me") shot down over France on 1/23/43. He was one of three crew members who survived, was captured
and sent to Stalag Luft III. Though he died in April, 1990, it was announced 10/5/2004 that he is being awarded the Legion of Merit for his work in maintaining, at great risk to his own life, ledgers
on POW's, including accounts of war crimes, while in Stalag Luft III. The LOM presentation date has not been announced, but will probably be presented by the Arkansas Army National Guard to his
sister, Marie Hall. I was doing some background info searches on his unit, Stalag Luft III, and his liberation at Moosburg, GE, in 1945.

Hi, I am an aviation enthusiast, especially WW2 aircraft. I was born in England in 1949 and yes I am very grateful for all the US (and British) airmen who gave so much so that I could have a free life. I
found this site after talking by email to the son of a tail gunner from the Ragged Irregulars. I was selling a print on ebay and we got into a lot of history - up to that point I (like many others)
thought Memphis Belle was the first 25 mission B17 but no it was your Hell's Angels (I believe MB was first in 91st BG not 8AF). So I'm learning! My print is called "Coming Home" and is of B-17Fs of
359 Sqn in 1943 if anyone is interested - this is not a sales ploy as the prints sell well - just thought someone here might be interested Thanks to you all John

My grandfather is Joseph Sunderlin, a crew member on the Yardbird when it was shot down 29 May 43. He passed away when I was 6, in 1970, from a heart attack. One thing I always remember was his pipe
and how much he loved to smoke. He had a small model of a B-17 that sat on top of his TV that always had my interest. Both of my grandfathers played an important role during WWII (he flew in B-17s,
the other built P-51s in Niagara Falls) and instilled in me my love of aircraft. I just retired from the USAF after 20 years and had the privilege to work on many different aircraft (and even get to
fly in a few!) from the SR-71 (my very FIRST!) to the C-141B. Your site finally helped fill in some of the missing details of his last mission. I have the photos shown in the site (Wulf-Hound,
Yardbird, Yardbird II) and a few others, given to me by my mother. I was also given his Air Medal, as a keepsake in his memory. I'm glad I found this site (re. Finescale Modeler magazine) and hope to
contact any other surviving crew members he flew with.

I noticed that you have posted a W.R. BOWERS who is listed as a member of BILEK'S CREW, 360th. I am looking for information on my great uncle, WILLIAM ROBERT BOWERS, who was supposedly in the 340th Squadron, 97th B.G. He was a tail gunner and was said to have even trained pilots while stationed in Florida. He trained at Thunderbird Field and was said to have flown in a bomber named THUNDERBIRD, which was named after said field. He was shot through the lung and received numerous wounds from shrapnel, which affected him his whole life. Was told that he had a bomber out from under him and had
to ditch another. He flew out of England and Africa.
Robert was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and later moved to Florida. He died on 8 November 1985. Would like to know if the W.R. BOWERS that you have listed might be my great uncle. Thanks.

I just read Bob Hand's book, The Last Raid, and was impressed by the photo of the Hells Angels bar in the Officers' Club. There are at least 2 photos on the 303rd web site. I see that the group
adopted the name in 1944. Can anyone remember when the logo was put up over the bar at the Officers' Club and maybe who had the letters made? It made for a classy and highly deserved way for the air crews to relax. Good taste is much in evidence!
I enjoyed reading Bob Hand's book, because, like my father Walter Hargrove, he was a 303rd BG bombardier. Mr. Hand describes the unique activities of bombardiers involved in fusing the bombs, oxygen checks, and use of the Norden bomb sight. One of the unfamiliar machines he mentions is the Cletrac, the tow tractors used to haul B17s around for repair and servicing. I could not find a photo of one on the 303rdBGA web site.

Being a military modeler, I am always searching the web for research of new project ideas. As I was searching your site I noticed a entry in the "Nose Art" section, that immediately caught my
attention. The aircraft "Miss Ouachita" (B-17F-20-Douglas, S/N 42-3040) is listed as MIA on 2/21/44. I have information concerning this aircraft's fate. According to the
book "B-17 in Action" (Squadron publication) This aircraft was brought down nearly intact by Luftwaffe pilot Maj. Heinz Bar. In the book, (I cannot remember the page number) You see a photo of this
aircraft on the tarmac, having engine maintenance work done. The photo underneath shows Major Bar examining the aircraft's nose art. I hope that this helps out somewhat.

My wife and I enjoyed a beautiful Rhein cruise in April, with stops in Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Koln, Boppard, Rudesheim, Heidelberg, Speyer, and Strasbourg. Near the cruise's onset we passed near the
northern German cities' of Hamm and Xanten, and I noted a very old bombed-out red-bricked aquaduct (or bridge) which had once brooked the Rhein here. I would be willing to place a bet that the 303rd
destroyed this structure. Might someone have additional details of the mission? Very nice website. My absolute highest regards to the men who sacrificed so much in their participation of the defeat

I have been commissioned by a friend to build a 1/72 scale plastic model of the "Bonnie-B" B-17G. I have looked at the pictures of this aircraft on the 303rd web site and have gotten some very good
information for the model. Is there someone in your group that could supply me with color information regarding the coloring of the nose art ("Bonnie-B") and the color of the mission markers on the
nose? In other pictures of B-17's, these mission markers are usually either yellow or white but I would like to be as accurate as possible in building this model. I would also be interested in the
colors of the art work on the main landing gear hubs of the "Bonnie-B". I am a retired 66 year-old man and have always had an interest in aviation history and have been building models for many years,
always trying to build them as accurately as possible. I have built other model aircraft, a B-24D and a B-17G, for other veterans of World War II and am looking forward to building the "Bonnie-B". Any
help or direction you could point me to for help on this project would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance for any consideration.

I would like to learn more about his history. I know my Mother has a lot of memorabilia so maybe there is something we could share.
Thanks again!

At the Savannah reunion, Vicki Sykes and Elmo Clark identified the man in the jeep in the big photo of Hell's Angels (listed as Monahan crew and ground crew on the web site). The man is not Robert Brown of Ordinance, but rather Major Kirk Mitchell. Mr. Clark served with Monahan and Mitchell and was quite certain of the positive ID. Many thanks! I was surfing the Internet and found the pictures of your Rhythm Pilots dance band. One of your sax players was SSgt. Robert Rabassa, who subsequently was my band director at Lewiston High School, Lewiston, Maine, 1965-1967. Bob was a great musician, a great teacher, and his strong recommendations helped me get into the Naval Academy. I graduated in 1971, went into nuclear submarines, and have since had a 25 year career with Northrop Grumman, where I am now a nuclear engineer and contract administrator. Glad you are keeping the memory of your group alive - it is so important in this
day and time when people have no clue how much you did for this country. Sincerely, Mike Cohen, Virginia Beach

Anent the query of E. Archer, regarding "combat instructor pilot" and what they
did ... here is some information: Combat Instructor Pilots were pilots AT A
COMBAT BASE, who indoctrinated new crews. Since we were on a daily learning
curve v.v. the war, we would take new crews when they arrived in the Theatre,
and attempt to indoctrinate them on what they will encounter once we send them
into combat. These so-called Combat Instructor Pilots ... (we did NOT call them
that in Theatre) ... were usually the Operations Officers and other lead pilots of
the Squadron, who had sufficient missions to be able to "indoctrinate" new crews.
It was usually the norm for a new crew to be "in training" in such things as formation
flying and methods of mission operation ... for about two weeks. Sometimes the
FIrst Pilot of a new crew would be sent on his first mission as a copilot with an
experienced crew. We seldom did that in the 360th where I was a wingman and lead
pilot, and later Commanding Officer. This was the same in the 359th where I was
an Operations Officer for a time.
Such training could NOT be done in the States, known as the ZI, even if some of the
Stateside Instructors had been in combat previously. Our combat techniques and
practices changed daily as the forces of war dictated. Such training HAD to be done
in Theatre. I hope this answers some of your queries.

My father, James H. Hardy completed 30 missions with the 303rd Bomb Group, 360th Squadron. I have recently joined this association and am attending the reunion later this month. I've been researching
the 303rd history and have the following questions:
It appears there were 4 squadrons assigned to the 303rd Bomb Group: 358th, 359th, 360th & 427th.
How many planes were typically assigned to each squadron?
When a mission was planned were all the planes in a squadron sent?
Triangle C designation appears to denote the following: 1st Air Division, 41st Combat Wing, 303rd Bomb Group. Is that correct?
What is the significance of the "(H)" in 303rd Bomb Group (H)Association?
Is there a good place to find this basic information.

My uncle Eugene F. Edwards has a wonderful picture of the B17 shot down with a German soldier standing on top of it. I understand the crew got out and Uncle Gene has a letter from the young man who
took the picture. It should be added to the crash pictures on this site. The plane went down on the east side of the Rhine. If the aircraft had cleared the treetops after being hit, it would have
made it across the Rhine into safe territory. You may wish to contact him to obtain a copy of this picture. He also has other mission pictures that I cannot find on your site. He may be able to provide more information to you.

I live just down the road from Molesworth in north Bedfordshire, where I retired after my last tour at RAF Chicksands. Lots of UK bases have closed, Woodbridge, Bentwaters, Upper Heyford, Greenham Common, Polebrook etc etc.
Nice to see Molesworth is still up and running, although there's no flying ... hasn't been for years.
We used to use the Molesworth rife range, as Chicksands was too small for one.
Anyone that wants any local photos, let me know, I'm up that way at least once a month, and would be happy to get a picture or two of anyone's old haunt. Larry

It was a thrill to read about my father, John Seddon, on your web site. Now that he's gone, I wish I had asked him more questions when he was alive. I'm afraid that we took his stories for granted. Luckily my daughter video taped his story for a college class. My sister is trying to plan a trip for us which will retrace his travels after being shot down. In particular, he tells about the
members of a village who stood around him, allowing him to escape from two police into a field and from there to the White Brigade Underground. During the time he was missing in action, my sister was
born. As so many of that generation, he accomplished much in life and was truly loved by everyone who came into contact with him.

I met a guy in Frankfort, Michigan, who told me to check out this website if I wanted more information. I think he said he was in the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war; is that this
group? My brother-in-law was an infantryman in that battle, and I think his son would like to know a little more about what his father experienced. I think the guy's in Michigan was named McLeod or
MacLean. This guy who told me about being a prisoner said that they had to peel rutabagas to make their lunch, and they would combine it with some rations that they had stowed away somehow. He
called them "the rutabagas from Hell." My brother-in-law was James (Jim) Conner, from Indiana and Kentucky. He passed away on Veterans' Day a couple of years ago.

contacted the gentleman that has the "White Brigade" website. Today I received information of his address. His e-mail does not work. I think he has more detailed information on Dad's route, so I am
