Researching an Uncle of mine Donald E. Jones who was killed in action on B-17G Miss Umbriago #42-97187 360thBS (Arthur D. Michaelis Crew).
I have always been fasinated with the B-17 since I can remember. I used to watch a show called 12 O'Clock High when I was a kid. Years later my Grandmother showed be a picture of her Nephew that was
killed in action on a B-17 during the war. In July of 2003 I had the privilage to take a ride on a B-17G owned and maintained by the E.A.A. called Aluminum Overcast. It was an experience that I will
always treasure. For 30 min. my imagination took me on a mission to simulate what these men must have experienced. Thank you for this information, I will send it to my Uncle's sister whom I am sure
will greatly appreciate it.

I am looking for information about my grandfather 2/Lt Wallace A. Clines. I know from this site he was the copilot on the Sweat Pea with Franklin White's Crew, but after that he was promoted to pilot and flew one mission. I was wondering if anyone new which plane he flew and if a photo of that crew is available. Thanks Todd

I read the lead item on the first page of the August 2004 Newsletter. As usual,
an excellent Newsletter! The lead item to which I refer addresses the "Decision
On 303rd Archives" ... It is a tempest in a Teapot! Nothing this basic should
rent our Group Association asunder!
The Association President should direct that these archives be sent to the
Mighty 8th Air Force Heritage Museum in Savannah! The Board should then make
a decision as to how to fund this operation. That ends it!
There is no better repository for our archives than the Heritage Museum. It was
practically BUILT by our own Lew Lyle! Were it not for his efforts, the Museum
would still be in the planning stage, in keeping with the apathetic and PC approach
to most things these days! Lew DID it! AND, the 303rd is featured more than
any other Bomb Group at the Museum. Send our archives THERE. And stop this internecine bickering!
There, SANS PC, I gave you my two cents! Cheers! Bill Heller, former CO the 360th Squadron.

Gary Moncur, I want to thank you for conceiving the idea of placing the photos of graves and MIA names on the walls of the missing for all of the overseas cemeteries. You and your volunteer helpers who contributed the photos have done a great job and a muchly appreciated service for the families of these men who did not come home. I'm sure there are probably a lot of families who have never seen
photos of their loved one's final resting place. As a brother of one of these men who did not make it home I want you and everyone involved in this project to know that your efforts are appreciated. Sincerely, Bill Owen

I am a great-nephew of Carthel Owen Gaskin, who was a bombardier on the B-17 Old Glory. My parents gave me his first name, Carthel. I have tried to find out everything about him that I can. He was
killed in action when the plane that he and the rest of the 360th Fisher Crew were flying was shot down over France, on June 22, 1944. If anyone could give me any info at all about my great-uncle,
it would be greatly appreciated. I want to learn all I can about my namesake. He is a true military hero. He volunteered into the Air Force for the sole purpose of getting his brother Delmer
Gaskin, who had been drafted into the army, out of the German POW camp Stalag 3B. Delmer was finally liberated after 27 months in Stalag 3B and is still alive, though he is suffering from bone
cancer. Anyone who has any info on Carthel Owen Gaskin, his efforts in the Air Force, any medals, citations, honours, or awards he received, etc. can contact me by e-mail. Thanks a lot. Sincerely, Carthel Ellis Thomas

I happened to be searching for the elementary school that I attended while my father was serving at RAF Alconbury 1970-1974. I went to school at the American school at RAF Molesworth 5th and 6th

years of operation. Thanx for your great work on this web-site!

He LOVES talking about his days in the service, and just recently showed is granddaughter his WAR MAP and all 35
of his missions that he circled on the map. It was quite interesting. He's a true American and very proud of his service to our country. Thank you for having his name and photo on your website, he

Just finished reading a loaned book, Half A Wing, Three Engines And A Prayer by Brian D. O'Neill.
It was a very interesting book. I was just 7 years old when WW II began, so I was a little to young to participate. However, I do remember the things that were going on back in the USA during those
years. The book describes what was happening over Europe during that time. I doubt that many of us realized what the aircrews were experiencing during combat.
I had a cousin who was a top turret gunner in a B-24 in the Pacific. He was wounded and eventually lost the use of his right arm which was amputated above the elbow. However, this did not stop him
from enjoying many outdoor activities. He fished, hunted small game and deer. He would refer to missing arm as "this isn't a handicap, it is only a minor inconvenience."
After reading the book I feel that his attitude was similiar to that of most of the crews. They went through HELL and were not detered by their experiences. They came home and led very constructive
lives. To all of the surviving members of the Eight. THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE.

Hi- My grandfather was a firefighter for the 303rd at Molesworth. He passed away in 2001 and only a few thing remain of his duty in WW2. I have a few ribbons and some pictures and paperwork. What I am
looking for is any information regarding special patches or pins he might have received as a firefighter. Did they have different lapel pins? Did they have firefighter badges? Any information would be
appreciated. Also, I am trying to reproduce a jacket he might have worn. Anyone know if the ground crew (firefighters) wore the D-1 leather jacket? Thanks for your time and help. Feel free to email me
any information.

Hello, Gary. In Sept. 2003 I sent you what few photos my family and I could find of my father Charles F. Scott, Jr., a B-17 pilot, and his crew. Today I'm writing to add a historical footnote to your information on him. I think you'll find it interesting, and for me, it's a way to honor his memory.
On August 1, 1946, in my east Tennessee hometown of Athens, my father was one of the GI's who led what has come to be known as "The Battle of Athens." These men had fought for liberty overseas only
to see it withheld at home by a corrupt political machine. On 8/1/46, election day, things came to a head, and my father acted with bravery against a group of gun-toting "deputies" who were thugs.
As usual, ballot boxes were stolen and stuffed, but this time, the GI's, led in part by my father, put up resistance. Shots were fired throughout the night, and finally the political machine
surrendered. A bipartisan slate called the "GI Ticket" was elected. In the aftermath, the Good Government League was created. It became a model nationwide for civic and electoral reform. In many
towns, machine politics was supplanted by a movement toward openness and accountability, and those efforts were led by GI's. The GI's in Athens were the first.
The Battle of Athens made the front page of the New York Times, and Eleanor Roosevelt wrote about it in her newspaper column. My father and a few others spoke all over the country. The most
scholarly account of the battle, a book by professor Steven Byrum, cites the time Daddy and two others were invited to speak to the national VFW convention in Boston. They raised the Tenn. flag
over the Miles Standish Hotel where the convention was being held. How like him.
I hope there is some forum within your website to include this story about my father. Thank you for your
attention to my request. Best regards, Sarah Scott

This for Shawn of Letchworth, England, who wrote saying he has a model of the Knock-out Dropper.
Hi, Shawn,
My name is Mark Shoup. My father, John, was the Knock-out Dropper's first bombardier. He flew to Molesworth in the fall of 1942 and completed his 25 missions the following June. When the war was over,
he was scheduled for jet fighter training but left the service, as did many other men, when the war ended. He stayed in the National Guard another 28 years and retired a Lt. Colonel.
Dad also named the Knock-out Dropper. The original crew submitted names for the plane, and his idea was chosen. If not for a few aborted missions, the Dropper would have been the first B-17 to fly 25
missions. I just thought you'd like to know this little bit of information.

My Uncle, William H. Wagner, flew on "The Floose" piloted by Captain James F. McNamara from April to October 1944 (I have photo from the 303rd archives!). They were part of the 303rd BG/358th BS. Other members of the crew included: Russell L. Ney, Wayne E. Krouskup, Leland H. Satre, Ted Lappo, Mark S. Kustic, Robert Mikola, John Jones and John E. Rodgers. Unc passed away in March 1998 and had kept in touch with Ted Lappo (now deceased). Trying to find anyone surviving from the crew, ground crew, or someone out there that may have know him personally from Molesworth or perhaps stateside
before deployment overseas. Please advise. I'd love to hear some first hand accounts! Thanks and talk soon! Barry

My uncle was a member of the Carl J. Fyler crew on that fateful day 29 Nov 1943. I want to thank the members of the 303rd for the information on him Ray D. Ford of Richmond, Va
I was only about 3 1/2 years old when he died in the plane as Ball Turret gunner. I had looked for many years for information about how he died. Tonight my search ended. For many years after the war I
would receive books by Charles Dickens for a lady who called herself Aunt Elizabeth. But the high point of tonight was in reading the story by Robert A. Hand Sr. It was the story of the men who flew
with my uncle and to of his death. If any of you who survived that day with my uncle Ray wish I would love to hear from you. Dennis R Simmons Sr.

On 13th and 14th November of this year, 2004, the Greatest Air Show in the Nation will be
held at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV. Many will recall that the Base is named for a
pilot by the name of Nellis who flew cover for us in the ETO in WW#2. The theme
of the Air Show will be to commemorate veterans of D-Day and Veterans of
WW#2, known as the Greatest Generation.
It is hoped that as many possible of you WHO WERE THERE, will attend this Air
Show. You must, of course, attend on your own. There are no facilities nor
assistances available. If you attend it is at your cost. You will be guaranteed a

Gentlemen,
I was delighted to find your website and wanted to pass along several things, all of you might be interested in.
I've been a docent for the National Air and Space Museum for 23 years now, with WWII Aviation being my favorite gallery in the building. During my discussion of the 8th AF in combat, I use the A/C on
display and "Fortress Under Fire" to tell the story all of you know to well.
During the final part of my discussion I tell of what happened to 2Lt. Hillary's crew on 8-24-44, what happened to "Thunderbird" and the story of 2Lt. Robertson widows visit to the museum shortly
after we opened in the summer of 1976. I plan to bookmark this site and come back often!

I have an old picture I found in one of my deceased mother's picture albums. It's of a B17 "Our Baby"

Lukenda; Engineer, S/Sgt. Armington; Asst.Eng., Sgt. Nycum; Radioman, S/Sgt. Tucker; Waist Gunner, Sgt. Traupel;

Just finished reading Half a Wing, Three Engines and a Prayer. Unbelievably well written, feel like I know and miss Elmer Brown Jr. Bob Hullar and the rest. My father, James F. Beck, piloted B-17's
with the 15th out of Foggia. 33 missions from January to May '45. Shot down over Yugoslovia, crash landed in field in the Alps, all crew returned to base within 3-days thanks to Tito's underground.
He has many other war time memories I have been privileged to hear. He always says the '43 and '44 crews were the real hero's. I can't tell any of you apart. Many thanks. Listing web-sites in the
book was an excellent idea.

My father John Winston Cottrell was a bombardier in the (I'm pretty sure) 303rd. He passed away in 1981, but I recall attending a BG reunion in San Diego in 1980(?) and meeting Cole Sanders and Hans Schmidt a German fighter pilot who was to give a presentation. I was wondering if you had any links to photos from that reunion. I didn't notice his name in the list of 303rd members and didn't know
if this was an exhaustive list. I am working on a geneaology site and would like to include information about his war experience. Thanks for your help. Beau Cottrell

My father was stationed at Molesworth from Sept 1956 to Oct 1959. I lived on the base in base housing which was finished in 1957, it was down the hill to town. My brother and I was all over the base
and in the old barracks that still had pictures of the nose art on doors and on walls, some of the buildings had the cities and bombs on the wall too, i understand that it is all gone now.
As a 11-14 year old kid I stood on the old run way and pictued the planes coming and going.
Thank you all for what you did !!!

Hello, What a wonderful site... My brother-in-law just passed away the first of June. He was 87, a navigator on the B-17, "Snuffy II" They were stationed at Grafton Underwood air base outside of
London as best as I can remember. He told me that "Snuffy" was shot down over Germany, and the crew were captured by the Germans. When they arrived there, they named their B-17 "Snuffy II". There is
one surviving member, in Calif. From this point I am at a loss in finding any photos of the crew or plane. I had hoped that I could have surprised him for his birthday, but regrettably, he died. He
never spoke much of his life in the Army Airforce...he will be missed. Thanks for your fine website. An old fella called Frank...

I was searching the web for information on my uncle, Archie H. Hinson, Jr. (called Joe) from Kershaw, SC and found your website. I was fortunate to find a picture of him with the rest of the Russell Meier Crew - 359th BS. He did not talk much about his service. Can you tell me, please, if there is any other information about him or anyone who can share memories of him? I would so appreciate hearing from anyone who knew him. Thanks, Wanda

I am researching US citizens who served with the RAF/RCAF during WWII. After Pearl Harbor, Many would transfer to the US Forces. To date, I've identified the following 303 BG personnel who served with the RCAF before transferring to the USAAF.
Bartlett, Middleton, Woddrop, Rolfson, Halpin, Bolsover, Kendall, Manifold, Murphy and Harris.
I'm attempting to identify if the following ex 303 BG members were ex RAF/RCAF: Knudson, Counts, Fleming, Sawrecki, Bowman, Brehm, Rogan and Tippett.
I'd appreciate any contact with any of the above and/or relatives along with any other ex RAF/RCAF Americans.

I WAS ON TDY TO LAKENHEATH AIR BASE IN THE SUMMER OF 1952. WHILE THERE I TOOK SEVERAL DAYS LEAVE TO VISIT MOLESWORTH. I PUT MY MOTOR BIKE ON THE TRAIN AND DEPARTED FOR THRAPSTON... AFTER TRYING TO
REMEMBER HOW TO NAVIGATE THE ROADS TO MOLESWORTH , I STARTED THE SHORT TRIP AND ENDED UP ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE FIELD. WHICH WAS ENCLOSED WITH BARBED WIRE AND PROTESTERS. AS I CIRCLED TO FIND
AN ENTRANCE ONTO THE BASE I FOUND AN OPENING AT A HARDSTAND . I PUSHED THE WIRE ASIDE AND RODE MY BIKE ONTO THE FIELD AND FOUND MYSELF AT THE NORTH END OF THE N-S RUNWAY. PROCEEDING SOUTH ON THE
OVERGROWN WEED STUDDED PAVEMENT, I CAME OPPOSITE THE HANGER NEXT TO THE CONTROL TOWER. I IMMEDIATELY PROCEEDED EAST TO THE TOWER AREA. UPON APPROACHING THE TOWER I WAS SHOCKED TO MEET SEVERAL
MILITARY POLICE WHO WERE VERY INTERESTED IN MY PRESENCE ON THEIR AIRFIELD. I EXPLAINED MY PROPOSED VISIT AND THEY WERE KIND ENOUGH TO ESCORT ME TO THEIR HEADQUARTERS, WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE THE OLD
BRIEFING ROOM BUILDING. THERE I MET THE COMMANDING OFFICER, A CAPTAIN WHO TRUSTED THE TRUTH OF MY STORY AND WE ENDED UP HAVING LUNCH AND AN INVITATION TO RETURN AT ANY TIME . THIS GROUP OF AIRMEN
WERE AN ADVANCE TEAM TO READY THE BASE FOR REACTIVATION . MARY AND I HAVE BEEN BACK TO THE BASE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS SINCE THEN AND HAVE ENJOYED THE HOSPITALITY OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED SINCE 1952.

thankfully pleased with my attendance and seating in section 1M at the wwii memorial ceremony about 75 feet from president. the commissions expert planning ,logistics and over 5000 superb caring
volunteers made this a most enjoyable occasions. noteworthy ,there were no protest outcries nor any protest banners or activities in audience. speakers were on point ,concise and applauded
politely. some may not know that the volunteers were called out couple hours earlier than scheduled. there had been heavy rain overnight and the 100,000s of chairs had water in them. volunteers
emptied and dried each befor we wwii vets arrived. there were rest tents, food booths and greatly plenty od cold bottled watere. american school youth made red, white and blue and small us flag
attached boutinares that were handed out, with the child who made it's name and school location on it's card attached. the entry ,even through the meatal detectors to enter into 1 M section was very
fast and thorough. the monument is serenely georgious with the softly landing water fonts. the structure has a soft welcoming surface and each configuration about it is delightfully presented. my
reward for being healthy and to recognize so very many youth helping their kin veterans onto metro ,onto shuttles and to seatings. that was a grand highlight of my attendance to know so many really
cared after all these years. i thank MS. M. KEATING of the commission committee for her assistance to me and others via her monitoring of the 303rd chat line site. BRAVO!! to the commission for
operations well done.

Airbase Memories by Mark Brotherton
The hangar stands now as giant peak of memory in the daylight
The Quonset huts are now speed humps in the mind, slowing the brain
Ensuring the senses take in the memories
The runway shadow calls to be recognized as the fast track to glory, commitment and perhaps death
The fields are taking over the base
But now the memories slip back into the landscape and back into the mind
These are vets remembering the most minute details of the alter stretched out before them
Their old base understood, by only them.
To daily passer bys this is an old farm seen everyday without great importance
To these visitors it’s the most scared place on earth
A place where great stories make up a far away life
Maybe a history book here and there
And now the authors and subjects stand here and stare
Families stand as a quiet guard protecting the moment as the veterans themselves are lost
Lost in a world where only they have gone and hope their grandchildren will never know

I found your web site after attending the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. this weekend and speaking to a brother of 303rd member last name Oxendine (of the 358 BS I think). I have found
it, very helpful in learning more about aircraft in which my father flew in. I have two photographs of the 'Yankee Girl'-359th BS, which my father, Lewis 'Elwood' Carl, took in early 1945. One
is of the nose art, not as good as the one on your website, the other is of the aircraft. I have scanned both photos as well as of a couple of composite photographs containing various nose arts,
crew members, and one set is is VE-Day 8 May 1945 containg aerial shots of various cities: Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, Koln, etc. If you are interested any of these photographs for your
archives, please send me a email with mailing address and I will sent you a scanned copy. I am interested in hearing from anyone, whom might have served with my father, unfortunately he never
spoke much about his involvement in the war, he past away in October 1986.

bravery and courage of all the people who flew and operated at these airfields. Whether its the RAF or the Mighty Eighth ,we are indebted to you all. Most of the airfields lie quiet now and to me there
seems an unequalled sereness at these places,It certainly gives oneself time to reflect on the sacrifices made all those years ago. Many thanks for an interesting web site. Regards Tony.

Neal E. Hainlin, Jr. was my Dad. Sadly, he died in 1996 from Alzheimer's. Although he never talked much about his war experiences that included being shot down and taken prisoner, in one stage of his
illness he "saw soldiers" in the woods, and he would want us all to run. I needed to update my email address, and I am so glad that this web site has given so many the opportunity to share stories and

ROBERT MORGAN, pilot of the B17 Memphis Belle, has Gone West this week.
Gone West is an old pilot saying for having died. Each time any news of MORGAN
hit the Press or TV news, it was always mentioned that he flew the Memphis Belle,
the FIRST B17 in the ETO in WW#2, to complete 25 missions. Many of us know
that this is not so. The B17 "Hell's Angels" of the 303rd "Hell's Angels" Bomb
Group (H), OUR Bomb Group, was the first B17 to complete 25 missions. This has
been authenticated and "peace" has remained between our organization and the
Memphis Belle people. They HAVE agreed that OUR B17 "Hell's Angels" was the
first B17 to complete 25 missions. I am personally chagrined that the Press has
not seen fit to correct this information whenever they mention great heroes
like ROBERT MORGAN and his fine crew. This information is proffered for those
of our organization who may not have known of the "peace" reached between
our organization and the Memphis Belle people. At 85, ROBERT MORGAN is yet
another of the Greatest Generation to have Gone West. A trip we must all take.
Let us rejoice in the memory of all of them. Thank you. BILL HELLER, (formerly
of the 359th and 360th).

I am searching for information about my father,
James "VAN" Nelms. My dad, was a tail gunner on a B17. He served from 1942 till 1945. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing his 25 missions over France and Germany. My father passed away back in June of 1972 at the age of 52. He never spoke much about the war, but he loved airplanes. After the war he went on to work for hughes aircraft, where he earned his a+p ticket. He later went on to work for Trans World Airlines for 20+years and was the general foreman at the Philadelphia hub of TWA until his death. If anyone has any information about Jim "VAN" Nelms, please contact me. This site gives me a little more insight about what hell my father went thru. Thank You! James V Nelms Jr.

story about this in any of the 303rd books, except a photo in a Jan. 1989 news letter. Recently came across a book that may be of interest to the flying personal, 'A Real Good War' by Sam Halpert.

I wanted to find a way to let my children know about the bravery of the men who fought and died before they were born. Each of my children have heard me speak about their great-grandfather and the
sacrifice he had made for us before we were born. I am so glad that I had the chance to let them see this forum and to learn about the sacrifices made by each.
I salute each family and am humbled by the sacrifice made on our behalf. Each day I am thoughtful for the price that was exacted from all for us who came after.
Thank you for the honor you pay to all who are remembered here. May we never forget freedom isn't free. May we all remember that any accomplishments that we have made have been made because of the
sacrifices that each have made.

Greetings, and thanks for putting up such a comprehensive site. Very nicely done!
I'm writing a biography of Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews, the airman who served as ETOUSA from Feb. 1943 until his death in a crash in May 1943. I would be interested in contacting any veterans with
memories involving him. In particular, I would like to locate any survivors of the raid on a U-boat facility at Vegesack, Germany, whose lead crew you show on your site. Churchill, Andrews and Bomber
Harris attended a banquet at 8th AF HQ to celebrate this event with crewmen. It seems possible that some flyers who were present would still be alive. Anyone out there? Contact me at

This is great that I found you. My Dad, Jerome Milman, is going to be 88 this year and his health is not good. The family only has 1 picture of him and his crew which has no identifying information
as to what the names of his crew were. He claims that the name of his plane was the "UnInvited" an that the picture taken under the nose of "The Floose" was a plane the photographer set up in front to
for a whole group of crews all taken in front of the same aircraft. I am sure that my Dad would love to hear from, or about any of his crew who are still around. He is very reticent about talking
about his war time experiences but has proudly proclaimed that he brought home the same crew the went over with and suffered no causalities. Thank you so much for all the effort you have made in
putting together this web site

Your web sight is wonderful. I've shared your information with my brother, Craig Cote, who still lives in Maine. Our Dad, Norman Cote, returned to our home town of Augusta after the war and lived
there all his life. Dad talked alot about "Idalizer". He connected with a craftsman in England who made him a beautiful wooden plaque of the "Idalizer" nose art. And our home town paper did a full page article on the
105 missions she flew with a picture of Dad looking at the plague. I never knew he was crew chief, as well, for "Satan's Workshop" and "Dolittle's Destroyer".
I took Dad to see a B-17 on display in Portland, Maine in 1995. Dad passed at home on May 31, 1998 of natural causes. He was a banker all his life - worked his way up from teller to president and
raised four children. His youngest was handicapped and passed when she was 12. My other sister was killed in a car accident when she was 25.
Craig and I have always been so proud of the service Dad gave his country. We know if the war had not been fought with the dedication and sacrifice that it was, our world would be a very different
place.
My brother's oldest son, Jeremy, is in Iraq. He talked with his Pepe often about his experiences in Molesworth and read extensively on the war and B17's. I'm sure Dad is watching over Jeremy and is
proud of his heritage as Jeremy embodies it. Jeremy is a tank commander in the First Armored Division stationed north of Bagdad. He's 21.
I plan on sending in my membership and will work on the biography unless Dad sent one in already. I hope he did but I'm not sure. Again, thank you so much for all the work that has been put into
this sight. Craig and I went to the 303rd museum shortly after we lost Dad.
Seeing Dad's picture under the information for "Satan's Workshop" was truly heartwarming. Thanks again so much,
Maureen Lee Cote

I have been an aviation historian for over 27 years. I have a diploma in Logistics and Historic research coupled with various other certificates dealing with my research work.
I wish to complement you on the determination shown by your organization, regarding the compilation of your history.
I admire this, as it reflects what is part of our Motto "DILIGENCE AND DETERMINATION".
In the mid 80's I commenced a 10 year research program involving the USAF and Northrop. Dr Ira E Chart (Northrop) was my mentor. Many USAF base historians were in constant
contact or visa versa during the period. Many to numerous to mention! But Never forgotten. The 303rd was researched by team in the first quarter of 89. Suprisingly the contact was fellow Historian Steve
Wilson at Vance AFB who started me going. Though the research is long over I never stopped and the interest is still strong. Especially extending to the relationship of both our countries in times of
conflict. Keep up the great work. Best Regards.

Hi, good folks. Impressed with your efforts to keep an historical site.
My uncle, Glenn Walker, (later lt. colonel) was a bombardier/navigator on B-17's in WWII, but I have no idea what bomb group he belonged to. He later flew with B-29 crews in the Korean War as well. I
can tell you he was almost seriously "wounded" on leave to visit my family about 1944. He was so enormously tall--about 6'-6" or more-- I wonder he was allowed on board. My mother and aunt were so
overjoyed to see him come up the walkway they each grabbed a long arm and pulled him into our small house. Where he banged the top of his head on the lintel and fell to the ground, almost knocked
out. "I survived fighter attacks only to be wounded coming home," he groaned (only partly in jest).
I belong to the European Air War group at SimHQ.com, a wonderful bunch with worldwide members dedicated to keeping this five-year old WWII combat flight sim alive, with literally hundreds of "mods"
(modifications) of aircraft and combat areas.

You have developed a site that does you proud.
We still have heroes, many times the memories are searing and the healing long. If you have yet to record your memories, consider doing it. I lost a hero the other day. We never got Papa Dave's Luzon
exploits with a flame-thrower on record. Lied, enlisted at 16. He was a Hurricane. Got sick. Got well. "Nope, you're not a Hurricane, anymore. They got wiped out. You're a Black Hawk, now." Angry
young man, seeking enemies, freeing prisoners of war, guarding Yamata (sp?), "Go home Mexican man, your fight is not with us." Papa Dave used to sit and swap war stories with the Cuban across the
street, who served in Angola. And I was in the gulf in '74. I'm sorry I can't share your site with him. He would have liked it, too.

I would like you to know that I have published a book about my experiences as an 8th Air Force Bombardier on a B-17 from June-October, 1944, stationed at Polebrook, England (near Peterborough). This
is an account of my 34 missions and my reactions to them. My memories were enhanced by my visits to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. where I reviewed each mission report.
The book entitled "An Innocent at Polebrook: A Memoir of an 8th Air Force Bombardier" is published by AuthorHouse and is available from them either by phone at 888-280-7715 or online at
www.authorhouse.com or at amazon.com. It is in paperback and reasonably priced.
I would like to share my story with those who faced the same circumstances and others who are interested in this unique time in history.

My name is MSgt Greg Henneman and I am the historian at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, known as Alamogordo Army Air Field to those of you who trained here before entering combat in World War II.
Unfortunately, our archives of the World War II days are very sparse. Although this base has a special history, many records describe the location at the time as just another training base.
In order to record the World War II history of Alamogordo Army Air Field, I’d like to request any stories, recollections, or photographs you may have from your time in New Mexico. These will be used

Robert L. Murray, radio operator on Lt Arthur Pentz's crew (Ol Ironsides) recently passed away (March of this year). I am very saddened by Bob's death. Bob was a POW in Stalag 17B and was in the same barracks (37A) as my father, John Costello, who died in 1974. My father was a waist and tail gunner with the 351st BG. Bob was very kind to me when I wrote to him in 1991 and asked if he knew my father. He sent me the original copy of a very detailed diary he kept in prison camp, as well as an out-of-print book written by Ben Phelper about 17B (which included photos of my father as a POW).
This was a very generous gesture on Bob's part and showed an extraordinary level of trust for him to loan me these valuable books. Through these books, Bob gave me insight into my father's war
experience that I never would have had. I'll never forget him for that. I recently spoke with Bob's son, also named Robert, who lives in Augusta, GA, and told him the high regard I have for his
father. He was a credit to the 303rd. I want to compliment you on an outstanding website! It is, by far, the best I have seen! God Bless all of the brave men of the 303rd BG.

My aunt sent the site to me. My Dad was a member of the 303rd Bomb Group. Dad flew on the Thunder Bird. This is a nice find for information about his tour of duty, and what he and his crew have done
for their children.

My Dad was a Sgt. on the "Better Do Er" and I saw his picture there. I have seen this picture before when I was a kid and was looking for some more historical data on him. I found several pictures of him on the internet. The pictures I had of him are now missing. He passed away in early 1978 from Lung Cancer. I don't have the exact date with me but if your interested I can get more information.
Thanks for taking me down memory lane !!

Reminiscing with former coworkers about our about our former boss, Wm. D. Scahau. I remembered him telling me about a particular bombing run in Germany. Such history and the brave men and women who
fought so courageously. I have uncles that served in the Army and Navy. The past should never be forgotten.

Billy Gaumer was one of my very good friends, and I was watching the history channel about B17s, He passed away not to long ago and brought back so many the stories he told me about your
missions. God blessed me with Billy's friendship and I just had to visit. Thanks so much for reminding me how brave you guys are, and for Billy's family for making me part of theirs. Mark

Just got in contact with Harry Williams, of Chipley, FL. My
brother Norman M. Clark and Harry met in Dulag Luft and were
in Stalag Luft IV together. They were in the Death March in Germany during the winter of 1945 and were finally liberated near Moosburg. It appears that Harry in the last of a group of 18 men who
shared a room in Stalag Luft IV. I plan to visit him around the 9th or 10th of May this year. Norman went down on "Old Hickory" on 2 Mar 44. That plane had no nose art or name on it, because it
was delivered to Molesworth on 28 Feb 44 and went down on its maiden flight.

I am the executive assistant to Mr. Lynn David, Clayton David's oldest son. Today, April 12, 2004, Lynn David is in Pau, France to mark the 60th anniversary of the escape through the Pyrenees
Mountains by his father. Lynn is making the trek across the mountains into Spain, retracing his father's footsteps.
I just wanted to say that it is an honor and a privilege to know the David family.

Hello there !! My name is Eddie and I live in England. Just a brief note to say what a great site you have and that the wealth of information is immense ! I am interested in finding a map of the
airfield at Molesworth circa 1944-45. I currently work on the airbase and would like to see a comparison of then and now. Also to let anyone out there know that there is a 1940's style Hangar Dance to
take place on Saturday 29/05/04 at RAF Molesworth and tickets are £10 per person. 40's style dress music and food are on offer. Keep up the good work, and everday I pass by the memorial I shall think
of the sacrifices made by one and all for our future. Yours sincerely, Eddie 'The Eagle' Pick

Recently, my husband and I visited the museum in Savannah.
Although I knew only that my uncle, Donald Harrison, had been killed in a bombing mission, the librarian was able to find his name in the computer archives. From that information, I learned he was in
the 303rd. I also learned that there were survivors of his mission. I hope to continue searching this website to learn more about his crew. P.S. I was born in 1945 and named for him.
