It is good to see a memorial of WWII vets. I think that our country has all but forgotten these men and what they did for us. My father never told who the men were he fought beside, but he did always say they were his friends. Thank you.

While shopping in a local store in the Richmond area today for yard materials, I saw a gentleman wearing an Eighth Air Force Heritage Society cap. Being a society member also, with service in the mid-sixties in the Strategic Air Command at SAC's Eighth Air Force headquarters, Westover AFB, Massachusetts, I began a conversation with him. What a pleasure it was to meet this WWII B-17 pilot who served with the 359th squadron, 303rd BG. To learn, despite our differences in age, that we had so much in common-same hometown roots, same college, a mutual friend, even the fact that he was my grandmother's paper carrier before the war- made our conversation one I will long cherish. Having learned of my interest in the Mighty Eighth's history, Mr. John S. Proffitt, Jr. alerted me to this website. I thank him and all 303rd BG members for your outstanding service. This website is a fitting tribute to the Group's history. I have spent so much time visiting the site, my yardwork will now have to wait for my next day off. Wilton Curtis

I am at the start of a search to solve a family mystery. I am looking for a member of the USAAF stationed at Alconbury Airfield in the Uk between 1944-1946. The man's name is George Althaus. I believe that he was from Long Island New York. This is the sum total of the information I have. Any information you can provide or places I could search would be helpful. My thanks in advance Steve Knudson

Would appreciate hearing from those who flew with Herbert A Daniel. He is my husband's uncle, and volunteered for both World War I and II. He was approximately 45 when he got special permission to volunteer for WWII. He is the one who had the lucky panda bear, "Jerome." I am sure some of you "young guys" who flew with him wondered why such an "old guy" was flying with you.

Steven Csajka scsajka@hersheys.com 23 Mar 04 - Pennsylvania
My Father who is still alive was captured sometime in this period. My Father, Peter Csajka US Army never spoke about his time in the Camp. I do know now. since he is begining to talk about it. He was captured and taken to a Camp. I belive it was Stalag 10b but are not sure. He did tell me he was wounded in the knee and was unable to get any medical attention. The Camp was finally over run by the English and he was free. He did tell me. After he was release from American Headquaters in England. They sent him to a very nice Hotel in North Carolina. I have only to find out because the VA sent him a letter about his POW time.

I got your website details from a book by Brian O'Neill - B17's Over Germany - Half a Wing, Three Engines and a Prayer. Always been overwhelmed by the fact that you guys came all the way over the Atlantic to fight in the skies over Europe and put up with English weather. I feel this was so far above the call of duty. Humble and proud that you came and did it. Not many people of my generation really know the sacrifices made by people of your generation. Just to say a big thanks really although words will never express gratitude. This is an episode I am just researching and I am just totally amazed. Once again, thanks.

Great site. I salute all of the men and families who gave EVERYTHING to keep us free. My uncle was one of them KIA/ B17G Frankfurt. I am doing research on the YB40 gunship. Would anyone have a photo of/ or be able to describe the bombay section? Was it stripped of bomb racks? Could the pilot (from the flight deck) see back toward the radio operator's gun position? It's for a film scene I'm working on. I've been inside a B-17G, but I am trying to get a feel for the YB40 interior. Thanking you in advance, Bryan
James Hargrove jhargrov@fcs.uga.edu 21 Mar 04 - Athens, GA, USA - (family of a 303rd Member)
Mr. Laurent Viton of France has provided useful information about my father, Walter Hargrove, and the crew of the Augerhead on their 13th mission to Paris and Amiens. They usually flew the B17 Hell's Angels on their prior missions.

Firstly, the German pilot who received credit for this downing is Oberleutnant Adolf Glunz. Glunz apparently flew FW190's out of Le Treport, anyway, he was near the Amiens airfield when the 358th bombed it. He is credited with something like 72 kills. Lots of information on Herr Glunz on the internet, he is a famous ace.

Secondly, Augerhead is thought to be the bomber that was reported by the French as crashing at Eu on the coast of France at 7:32 pm, Aug. 31, 1943. I am not certain, but the day and time are right. This is listed on line as kill 41 in Glunz's records.

Thirdly, the likely escape site for my father is north of Brest in Bretagne/Brittany. It was not out of the harbor at Brest. Heck, he could have taken the ferry to Jersey!

Last item, on the Evadees page, the crew's tail gunner is listed as Barton Pryor. If so, there were 11 men flying because SSgt David Miller, the regular tail gunner, was killed that day (he is reportedly buried in or near Abbeville). In one record, SSgt Pryor is listed as a photographer normally with the James crew. There were 2 substitutes that day, namely Vernon Olson and Louis Benepe because Pete Clark and M.D. Ignaczewski did not fly.

If anyone knows if there were 11 men on Augerhead, I would like to know. Otherwise, there may be a mistake if Pryor was on another plane. One reason I would like information is that I am not yet certain of the identity of the plane that crashed at Eu.

Finally, a Mr. Ian Le Sueur of Jersey wrote last year to say that a documentary was being made of a French family that helped my father and possibly Frank Kimotek. Dad never identified the people who helped him because of course that was classified information. It would truly fill in this story to know more about the French resistance and Oberleutnant Glunz.

My uncle, Gust A. Thompson is from Selz, North Dakota and was in Stalag 7B from August, 1944 through the end of the war. Gust jumped into Normandy with the 508th PIR on D-Day but was reassigned shortly afterward, he doesn't remember with what outfit. He was captured near Mortrain, France. Gust told us they woke one morning to find the prison camp deserted. They simply walked out (the ones that were able). He came across an older Nazi who threw his hands up and surrendered his pistol. Gust began walking with his prisoner (ironic) and several hours later came across Allied troops. Conditions at the camp must have been brutal. Gust normally weighs about 160lbs but weighed 85lbs when he shipped home. I am hunting anyone who knew my uncle. Thanks.

I have a photo of my uncle Oma Lee Toney's crew. He is the only one I know. The name of the plane is not visible. I would very much like to know the name of the plane and of the crew. Any information will be greatly appreciated. In the picture of the crew of the "One O'Clock Jump" is his brother, James R. Toney who was called "Buddy" by the family. I don't know if the crew called him "Sandy". I did correspond with Joseph E. Powers back in 1986 but have not heard from him since that time. Please advise if you have any information concerning either. Thank you so very much. Bobbie T. Walker

My name is Allen Lee and I am the grandson of Sgt. Oscie O. Lee who was a member of the Jack McGruffin Jr. crew - 360th BS. I noticed your pictures of the crew and showed them to my dad. He pointed out that the first picture is labeled wrong. You have my grandfather as the last man standing from left to right, my dad said that he was actually the second one squating from left to right. I just thought I would bring this to your attention in order to keep everything as accurate as possible. Thanks for this web site. Before I found it I knew very little about my grandfathers service years and your web page helped me to learn things I may have never found out. Thanks again.

My father was not in my life after the age of 7. When I turned 18 I began my own search. At age 25 I was able to get his military records from the V.A. and found out my father had passed away when I was 17. Still wanting to know more about him I found in his records that he was a P.O.W. in Stalag 7a. I have a copy of a camp post card, under his name is a Gefangenennummer:131521. Is this his prisoner i.d.# ? Who can I contact to get his records from the camp if they still exist? And how can I get my Dad's name on your site? My Father's Name is Robert D. Clayton Pfc U.S.Army Co.B 30th Inf. 3rd Div. I have more info if needed. Thank You.

It is actually my son and daughter, Dallas and Alyson Parker who are descendants of a 303rd member, Winston C. Teter. Dallas is 17 and graduates from Watertown High School this spring. I have been trying to find as much information about Dallas and Alyson's descendants as I can. Their Grandmother, Marion Teter Parker, Winston's sister, died while having their aunt in about 1956. Winston and Marion's parents are also deceased. I was extremely excited to find this website. Any information I can gather for Dallas and my daughter Alyson is precious. Right now, Winston's nephew, Deneil A Parker (Dallas's father) is serving on active duty in Kuwait. He once showed me a red stoned army air corp ring once worn by Winston. I was curious about where Winston is buried. There was a container in the barn on the farm where Deneil and I lived that was supposedly the vessel sent home containing Winston's body. There is a gravestone in the Coon Rapids, Iowa graveyard with his name. Was he returned to the US? Or is he buried in Europe? Thank you so much for this site. The information I have gathered is very precious. Connie E

Seems I came across this site like many other folks... just stumbled on to it. I was doing a search for Molesworth Jr. High school and this site popped-up. We were stationed at Alconbury from Nov. 66 to Nov.69 and my brother and I went to school at Molesworth. It was a really great experience. I had only come to know, in the last few years, that the "Hells Angels" flew out of Molesworth during the war. Dad retired in Montgomery. Sgt. Art Moody and we are still here with lots of other AF folks.... In resent years we have had the pleasure to meet and get to know AF RET COL. Brad Bradley who one day in a conversation about England and Molesworth said he had flown out of Molesworth during the war and was shot down and was a POW.... I think he said he was responsible for being able to get a POW car tag in Alabama and his tag was the first... Well I thought I would share those Molesworth connections after finding this site and I agree seems to be very well done and of great value to all those who have had that shared experience. All the Best

I frankly, love this site. It is the best of it's kind, and the reason it's on-to honor the men and women of the "Mighty 8th". They deserve the best; all of our armed forces who fought and died to protect the world's freedom. If it was not for the horrors they went through and the courage they had, we would of been victims to the evil axis. we are forever in their debt. God,Bless America and her Allies.

My husband's uncle served in both World War I and World War II. He had to get special permission to volunteer for the latter. His name was Herbert A. Daniel, 37 205 769, and I found out the following information when I went to Molesworth AB website. His pilot's name was Lester A. Lake and he was a b/turr on 11-29-43. Then, on 2-6-44, he was a w/g and his pilot's name was Jack W. Watson. I would love to hear from surviving members who knew Herb. He had a stuffed panda dressed exactly like him and his name was "Jerome." It is too bad that we wait until it is too late to learn our family's history. Thanks, Clara Elkins, Emporia, KS. Dear sirs, I have been told that my great uncle, William Robert Bowers, was a tail gunner on the Thunderbird. He trained at Thunderbird Field Arizona and trained pilots at Drew Field, Florida before going to England and Africa to participate in missions. He was wounded several times and had to ditch once in Africa. We have a picture of Robert and his crew, names unknown, which shows Robert wearing a coat with the Thunderbird patch on the shoulder. I have been told by Robert's brother that a picture of Thunderbird was on the cover of LIFE magazine, coming in badly damaged and hence the song "A Wing and a Prayer" was written. Robert was supposed to be on board at this time. My great grandmother, Robert's mother, had a copy of this magazine cover at one time. We have also been told that Robert was with the 97th BG. How can I verify this information? I do not see his name on your list of those who flew on the Thunderbird. Robert's widow is supposed to send me more information and pictures, which I will gladly forward to you if there is proof that he did indeed belong to a Thunderbird crew. Thank you,

My dad told me to check out this site. His brother, S/Sgt Earl Sheets, was with the 303rd bomb group, 358th Miller crew. I found a picture of the group. Earl died when he was 44, I believe from problems and complications from his war wounds. I was a small child when he died. My father had copies of his missions. I don't know if he still does. I am doing family history research and find this very interesting. Sincerely, Nadine Sheets

Gary, Isn't the internet wonderful. Five of my uncles were in WWII, mostly ground pounders, a paratrooper, and a sailor. As a birthday gift for the only surviving uncle, I was able to locate a "Shipmate" webpage, from which I received a "Shipmates" booklet that listed all the shipmates for his vessel, the William P. Biddle, now probably part of various pick-up trucks. I've only just begun reading your pages. After a 30-year AF career, I still look up when I hear an aircraft engine. Well done on the website, I'll be spending a lot of time reading over the journals. Thanx! Ken Gendolfe, SVAS 1973-76, USAF 1963-93, CMSgt (Ret)

My Uncle, Guy Collier just passed away Feb 15th at the age of 90. He is pictured in the 360th Ordnance group photo. He is third from the left on the bottom row. I spent a great deal of time talking with uncle guy and loved to hear him speak of his time in England. Uncle Guy is a hero to me. My Father, Walter Collier, and Uncles Lee Duncan, Claude Briley, and Benny Goff also served in WWII. As far as I am concerned, all who served in WWII, and other Wars, are heros and made the Freedom I enjoy possible. Thank you all!

In reference to Mr. Emery's post on 1 Mar 2004: I saw your letter posted on the web site of the 303rd Bomb Group regarding a B-17 crash in the LeMans area on 4 Jul 1943. On that date, my father's B-17 aircraft was shot down near LaCoulonche while participating in a raid on the Focke-Wulf engine factory outside LeMans. As you probably know, LaCoulonche is about 95 km Northwest of Malicorne. The details of the crash are detailed in MACR 161. After parachuting out of the crippled B-17, my father, Lt. John M. Carah, took refuge with the Louis Breteau family who owned a farm at Lassay, Mayenne. While staying at the Breteau's farm, another American officer by the name of Lt. Paul Rene was also in hiding at the farm. I do not currently know what unit Lt. Rene was from. In August, 1943, my father and Lt. Rene left Lassay for Laval and then took a train to LeMans and Paris. From Paris, they traveled by train to Dijon and then they started walking East. They eventually crossed the border to Switzerland at La Chaux de Fonds in September, 1943. The complete story of my father's WW-II experience is posted on the web site of the 381st Bomb Group at www.381st.org/stories_carah.html

The B-17 crash you describe appears to be a separate one from the one my father was involved with. None of the members of the crew were named Robert O'Connor or Richard Peterson. The names of the crew members in my father's plane are listed on the web site referenced above. I will look in my references for other aircraft losses on 4 July 1943 in the Lemans raid and see if I can identify the plane and crew that crashed at Malicorne on 4 July 1943.

AT THIS LATE DATE WHENEVER I LOOK AT A B17 ... OR A LIVE ONE WHEN IN THOSE VARIOUS SHOWS IN WHICH THEY APPEAR ... I AM ABSOLUTELY THRILLED AT THE VERY SLEEKNESS OF THAT AIRCRAFT FROM WAY BACK IN WW#2. THOSE OF US WHO FLEW IN THAT WONDERFUL PLANE PERHAPS DID NOT, AT THE TIME, REALIZE HOW AERODYNAMICALLY SLEEK IT TRULY WAS.

AS AN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE CAPTAIN FOR 35 YEARS AFTER THE WAR, TO INCLUDE TEN YEARS AS A CAPTAIN WITH THE POSTWAR LUFTHANSA GERMAN AIRLINES, I STILL REALIZE THAT OUR BELOVED B17 WAS A VERY SLEEK AND FORGIVEABLE AIRPLANE. THE LAST AIRLINER I FLEW WAS A B747 HAVING FOLLOWED THE DC3, DC4, DC6, DC8, and DC10. BELIEVE ME NONE OF THEM CAN COMPARE TO THE SLEEKNESS AND BEAUTY OF THE AIRPLANE YOU AND I FLEW IN WW#2.

NEXT TIME YOU LOOK AT HER PLEASE ADMIRE HER BEAUTY. THIS HAS BEEN OFFERED MERELY TO LET ALL YOU HEROES WHO FLEW IN HER APPRECIATE HER.

Excellent website and most informative! My father-in-law, Isaac H. Proctor, is a proud member of the 303rd BOMB GP. I wanted to learn more about his service to our country and the missions involved. Your site provided some of the information I was seeking. I had hoped to find a picture of him on the site but I was unsuccessful. It could be here but I shall have to search more later. Thank you for providing such a service to these men and their families so that the stories, histories and courage of these men is not lost. Thank you for your sacrifices so long ago that I could be raised and reside in freedom in this great country. God bless you one and all!

I would like to hear from any WILLIAM MONAHAN's crew members (or relatives) downed August 31 , 1943 near Eu flying 42-29635 "Augerhead" , 358th BS. For example I would like to contact JAMES HARGROVE, relative of Lt Walter Hargrove who was an evader. This is far important for the book I'm currently writing to honour RAF and USAAF aircrews downed in my area.

First Off, THANK YOU all of you who were there way back then and did what had to be done! Second, I'd like to say you have a GREAT site! I've alway been interested in history, devoured information on WWII since I was around 10 (42 soon..). I found your site while searching for information on B-30's suprisingly. I'm lucky enough to fly (IN COMPLETE SAFETY!) in B24's & B-17's in an online flight simulator called 'Warbirds' but know it's nothing at all like you all had to do.
Harald Leder hleder@cox.net 25 Feb 04 - Baton Rouge, LA
A research project brought me to this web site which is exceptionally well done. My name is Harald Leder and I work at Louisiana State University, where I teach international studies, German, and history. Recently I was asked by the Nuremberg city archives if I could write an article on the experiences of crew members of American bomber crews who were participating in the missions of February 20 and 21, 1945. The article will become part of a book to appear in Nuremberg commemorating the 60th anniversary of the missions. I know that there is lots of general material out there, and I found some very interesting information connected to Nuremberg on this web site but I think that it would be very useful to find out more about those specific missions and that specific target from participants themselves, since Nuremberg certainly had a reputation as being closely connected to the Nazis. So my question is if members of the 303rd bomb group who participated in the missions to Nuremberg on February 20 and 21 1945 would be willing to talk to me about these missions in particular, but also their views of things at the time in general. The city archives in Nuremberg ask that the interviews will become part of this project and will be deposited at the Nuremberg City Archives for future generations of historians to consult. Another article will be done about English missions over Nuremberg, and the third part of the book will deal with the effects of the missions on Nuremberg and the Nurembergers. The purpose of the project is to provide a balanced account of the events from all angles.

The article will appear in German, but I would be happy to provide an English version which could be posted on this web site if so desired. I think that there also would not be any problem in making the interviews available to be used on this web site as well. I would very much appreciate if anybody who would be interested on working with me on this project could contact me as soon as possible. The article is supposed to be submitted in June, so time is rather precious. Preferably I would like to interview persons who are not too far away from Baton Rouge, Louisiana (unfortunately this project is not very well endowed with funds), but I will travel wherever I need to go to conduct the interviews. I am always grateful for any suggestions anyone may have.

Apart from teaching and administrative duties at LSU, I take LSU students to Germany for a summer program, where we learn about German history and World War II right on location. While there is much to see that is fascinating, I am making it a point to show my students the dark sides of the more recent German history on location. We visit sites such as the Nazi Party Rally grounds in Nuremberg with their documentation center, the Palace of Justice where the Nuremberg trials took place, Dachau concentration camp, the site of the Wannsee conference in Berlin, and Hitler's Eagle's nest, where we also visit a museum dealing with Hitler and the Third Reich. I chose all those sites to bring it home to my students why American airmen had to risk their lives for bringing an end to the most criminal regime in history. German-American relations at the grassroots after World War II are at the heart of my work (my main research area is American re-education in Germany between 1945 and 1955 which in my opinion was really necessary and had a huge and very positive impact on many young West Germans). I have done a considerable amount of oral history in the past. Thank you very much for your time. I am looking forward to hearing from anyone who might be interested in this project!

I am the daughter-in-law of Raymond A. Boulter, KIA over Cologne, Germany. I just submitted a flight crew picture of his crew and it is already on the web sight, thanks to the great work of Gary Moncur. This web sight is wonderful and great tribute to the men represented. I am proud to have it as a memorial to Raymond Boulter. The crew member names on the photo are not the same as the names listed on the web sight. I would like to hear from anyone who might be able to identify the crew members. My husband, William Boulter, was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany in 1968-9 and we visited the WWII cemetary in Belgium and were proud to see Raymond A. Boulter on the wall of the missing. Thank you for this site. Joyce Boulter

This site is truly great, my mother knew a Group Navigator Capt Ronald E Sheppard who she believed flew from Molesworth. I was hoping to find him listed here, but sadly no. That however did not spoil the interest of those who flew, and the as much important ground crews who worked at Molesworth. Thank you for so very much to you all.

I was looking for information on what the markings mean on the aircraft and I love the "nose" art. My father was in the "Jolly Roger" squadron in the South Pacific. They had B-24's. I was also in the air force during viet-nam in the 3rd tactical fighter wing. I was a "Dog handler". My final station was at Barksdale afb in the 2nd Bomb wing(H). I enjoy your site very much. I read a report on the 1943 raid on the ballbering plant at Schweinfurt, I think we lost 60 ships that day. I saw a painting showing a B-17 group starting their bomb run. This was on a site about large daylight bombing raids. Thanks for a job well done on this site and for doing your duty for your country.

I have now visited the summit of Arenig Fawr in North Wales in the U.K. on four occasions since 1983. I have often wondered about the lads who lost their lives so tragically there in 1943. It is nice to put faces to these young lads names and read the history of the great service they did our country in those war years. The plaque is showing its age now I look forward to seeing a new one there on my next visit. I do hope you are successful in replacing the present one, good luck. Yours Dave White.

My father, Thomas R. McDonald, was a ball turret gunner on the Sunrise Serenader, 305th Bomb Group, 365th Bomb Squadron, shot down over Kiel, Germany on their 8th mission on May 19, 1943. I am somewhat confused about the fact that there were two very similarly named B-17s. My father's bomber was called The Sunrise Serenader. (as opposed to the well documented Sunrise Serenade (Jerry Penry's 452nd Bomb Group) I am hoping to find more information, photos etc. about The Sunrise Serenade. Cheers!

Not a lot to say except I'm an aviation enthusiast and sought out your site as being representative of all those wonderful 8th Air Force boys who helped us out during a spot of bother some time ago! I live in an area where there were many wartime bases although I was slightly too young during the war to be involved. But nice saying hello and do, with all the other groups, keep up the good work of recording those brave deeds from so many years ago. My best wishes to everyone stateside.

Hello and thank you for having this web site. I searched out this web site in order to purchase some items for a gift. My neighbor and friend was a ball turret gunner in the 8th Air Force, 303rd Bomb Group and 359th Squadron. He was injured during a flight over Germany and was shipped home to recover. All his gear and personal items were lost and never made it to him. I'm attempting to put together a framed grouping of items he would of had, i.e.-hat badge, wings, patches, stripes and other group identifiable items. Your PX site was helpful in gathering some of the items I wanted. I'm going to order some other things from the PX. In closing I want to add a thank you to all of you who served our country. I have an appreciation for your service that has no equal. All that I have and all the freedoms I enjoy are because of you. Again THANK YOU! With my highest regards and respect, Thomas A. Micek.

On the "whats new" page on the 303rd website, a picture of Bernard Kastenbaum, under the painting he made on "Skywolf". It brought memories back to me, as I was the original flight engineer on "Skywolf". I would like him to know that I thank him for such a wonderful drawing of the wolf with bow, etc. I remember it being done but never knew the young man by name, who was painting it, at the time. Hi, I think this is one of the most AWESOME sites EVER! I've always been a B-17 buff since I first started reading war history. Finally got to walk through one at an airshow a few years back, along with a B-24, and I now know why all crewmembers were skinny. Us fat guys would never make it in one of those baby's. This site has got to have the most info I have ever seen on any bombing group. I have no relatives that were here, but that still doesn't take away my pride I have for all of you. Because of people like you and my dad (medic,PTO), my brothers and I were proud to continue the tradition of military service for our country.

HI! First of all, thank you so much for the fabulous website! My father, now Lt.Col.(Ret.) Oran T. O'Connor, was the pilot of the Hell Cat that was shot down over France on Jan. 23, 1943. In several places on the site, his plane was thought to have gone down in the Bay of Biscayne, but he crash landed in a field, and was captured. He was a POW for the remainder of the War. Several weeks ago, I was contacted by a man from France who had found my e-mail address here, and wanted details about where my father's plane crashed. He was a child during the war, and had seen an American pilot burn after crashing his plane. He explained to me that he was researching the crash sites in Brittany where he was from, and wished to "pay homage" to all of the American aviators who had liberated his country. To all of you that think that people over there have forgotten, I want you to know, they still think of you and thank God for your bravery and for our freedom. It was so touching that he would go to so much trouble to find me, that I wanted to share it here. Thank you for this opportunity! Kathy Stanclift

Hello, I first came into contact with Jim Walling in Kona, Hawaii, whilst on vacation. He had been a ball turret gunner with the 303rd in 44/45. As a result, I met through e-mail Donald Campen, Harry Gobrecht, J P Rencher. Here I met Bill Adams, who has carved many plaques, etc for WW2 Air Force veterans, and whose story I wrote for the Sept. 2003 edition of Chipchats wood carvers magazine. As a 75 year old Englishman I saw many B17's and B24s in those days, and many airmen looking for r and r in Nottingham. We are well aware of the debt we owe to those young men.

On your page 'Unusual 303 stories' page one, there is a story by one Joseph DeLuca' of what's mentioned ---380BG B-17---(?)? His plane crashed near Utrecht, I'm living nearby and for relatives of a fellow-POW Stalagluft 1 I do some research on the plane of which Mr. DeLuca was lucky enough to bail out. CrashDate: 22.02.1944 'near Utrecht', ( two bailed out) over Holland is quoted in your story My question: Any serial nr. known, perhaps other info? Thanks for return-mail, regards, J. de Swart, Holland.

My brother referred me to this web site. My father, Alexander F. Marshall, was born on March 2, 1925. He enlisted in March 1941. He was made an officer in May of 1943. He retired from the Air Force in 1967. I would like to talk to William Tashian, as he provided information about the John Lawlor, Jr. photograph. In the picture is my uncle, Raymond Butler. He and the crew were declared missing in action in October 1944, and were listed as dead shortly there after. I was wondering if Mr. Tashian had information about the crew, including pictures and what the final mission was.

I live in Mid Wales,UK not far from the crash site of B17F 42-3124. I have been to the site and the memorial. Unfortunatly the plaque is in quite bad shape but there are moves by some local people and the Bala town councle to get it replaced with one made from granet which will be a lot tougher than the present one which is slate. I have been involved in researching WW2 aircrashes in Wales for some years and I would be very interested to hear from anyone who knew any of the men who died in the crash of 42-3124 on August 4th 1943. Another project I am working on is protecting crash sites from looting as I beleve they should be treated with the utmost respect.if anyone has any info about this crew I'd love to hear from them. Sincerly Matt Rimmer.

I hope I am not intruding. I have read your site from day one and it is so interesting. It is the first thing I do each morning. Does anyone remember anything about my Dad, Richard S. Crigger? He was a tailgunner on the Gordon and Cunningham crews. I learned that from you. I briefly touched bases at one time with Mr. Bill Carter. I have learned a lot about my Dad that I did not know since he did not discuss his wartime experiences with me. There is a picture of the plane Sweet Pea in France. Dad is not in that picture, but my son thinks he may have been in the shadow at the bottom. This website is so great. Thank you for serving and keeping our country free. God Bless you all. This is probably the most outstanding website I've ever seen and I've only looked at a small portion. My hat's off to you for the excellent presentation and material. This will be a wonderful living memorial to those gallant young men who risked so much for their country. I can't wait to get the CD and go through it. God bless all of the 303rd crewmen, the ground guys who worked so hard to keep the planes flying, and their respective families. Sincerely, Mike Simpson Webmaster, 445th Bomb Group (H) - B-24

My father Dallas E. Kendall flew this plane during WWII. He has passed away and had a die cast copy of her. He left it to my brother who didn't care less about it and it is now no longer in the family. I wish I could get another.

I was searching for info about a 78 RPM record I re-discovered at my Mom's as I was sorting things out after her passing. She had a lot of 78's and one of a handful that I remember listening to as a 6 or 7 year old was "Pistol Packin' Mama". I eventually clicked on the site for the G model named for that title. Thank you guys for the service you put in for this country! Rene Giguere, MSgt, RI Air National Guard

My son stumbled across this web site and now the whole family is engrossed! My children are so pleased to see pictures of their dad (William P. O'Brien) and read some historical accounts of his military action. This website will be "required reading" for my 23 grandchildren as they get old enough to appreciate it. Bill talked very little about his missions but we did know that just before one mission he was taken off it (as navigator). The crew went down. This same thing happened a second time; Christmas Eve - I think in 1944. We were married for 44 1/2 years. He died in 1996 of prostate cancer.

A year back I met Orlyn D. Chunat who was the co-pilot of the Lady Alta. I was making a repaint of the plane for the flight sim community and was getting information on the skin markings and placement from your historian. But Somehow forgive me the paint was not finished for no apparent reason, then my system broke down and was without my computer for 5 months. Now I have back and would like to complete the "Lady Alta" so she can fly once again. only this time in flightsims around the world. If possible I really need detailed info on plane markings, placement of markings, and even a photo of another plane from that squadron if possible to look at to. And style of lettering and how and where "The Lady Alta" was placed. I know it sounds like a lot, but I will give credit where credit is due, and also will keep in frequent contact with pictures of progress for corrections or approval. Thank you for your time. Steve

My uncle Fred Miller was killed as a B-17 tail gunner in WWII European Theater of Operations. I believe the year he was killed was 1943, the aircraft "The Knockout Dropper" and the unit: 303BG(H) attached to the U.S. Army 8th Airforce @ Molesworth England. Information is very sketchy. Uncle Fred was born in Waterbury Connecticut. I would appreciate knowing how to research the unclassified War Department official records to learn more about my heroic Uncle Fred so that I may tell my children about him. Thank you.

This is a great site. I landed here, looking for a certain airplane, flown by Flying Sgt. Kingman, a Spitfire, The Town of Darlington, is the name, I believe. Had read about the pilot, triple ace, and she all ways brought him home. The plane was damaged several times, however it did wind up flyable at the end of the war. And I think both he and the Spitfire were at RAF/Predannack, and I think thats Cornwall? A book was written about him and the airplane, then I landed here, and think you have a great site. My time in England was at RAF/USAF Brize Norton, even after all these years when I find myself under the flight path of a B-47. B-52 or KC-97 or KC-135, they still inspire awe in this former USAF Air Traffic COntroller, as do all the Veterans of all the Armed Forces, without them, we would have nothing. When our nation forgets that, I get a red ring around the collar. Thanks, Jim Sexton

I miss my uncle and wish I had spent more time with him as he and I got older. Not a day passes that I don't think of his and all the others involved amazing acts of courage and bravery. He was a ball turret gunner and was twice wounded over Germany. He served on Lt. Carl A. Fredrickson's crew. His name was Vincent Anthony Buonpane Jr. the grandson of Italian immigrants to America. He also served on F. E. Miller's crew after Carl Fredrickson's crew went down on mission 347, March 28, 1945, (my uncle was sick that day and could not fly) his crew went down and one was killed. I wish that there was a way to get in touch wit his remaining crew before it is too late I want to know more about him. I think that some of them are still alive because my uncle said he used to meet with them every year in San Diego. He died a few years ago and wasn't that old. Any way you can help I would appreciate it. Thanks, Blase Buonpane.

I really like your site. I became interested as I often visit Podington airfield in Northamptonshire (Santa Pod). It is now a Drag racing strip. Being there just makes me think about the guys who made the sacrifice to allow us to live the way we do today. I bought a model B17 that i have built and it is a replica of the "knock-out-Dropper". Searching for info on that plane brought me to your site. Thank you for the effort put into the site so that we may learn. Happy new year.

I'm the commander of 7th Weather Squadron (7 WS) in Heidelberg, Germany, and we have a framed 303 BG RAF Molesworth Reunion picture from 22 May 93--I'm trying to determine why we have it! It includes a WW II photo of the B-17 "Hell's Angels" as well as an 8AF patch and several others. It also includes signatures of what I assume are group members. On the back is a sticker with an address for Stanley G. Rowan at APO AE 09470. There are two Rowans listed in your personnel directory, so I'm guessing Stanley is a descendant and may have been a member of my squadron at some time. I would appreciate any information anyone can offer on a 7 WS connection (we were in the Pacific during WW II) or a claim on the article if we have it by accident. Lastly, I want to compliment you on an outstanding web site!

Hello, My interst in the 303rd dates back to the sixties. Steve Birdsall's first B-17 book contained quite a few shots of the Hell's Angels. I am an active member of the Dayton, Ohio chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society. A lifelong ambition of mine has been to build and detail all of the 303rd aircraft used on one particular mission. The one that I have the most on (thanks mostly to the information supplied by Harry Gobrecht) is March 18th, 1943. I noticed that you plan to hold your 2005 reunion in Dayton. Some members of the club and myself would like to offer up 303rd models for display at your banquet or perhaps in the hotel lobby, whatever you would like. I have over 25 1/72nd scale B-17 kits. E, F & G that can be built up. With today's technolgy, quite a bit of the nose art can be reproduced. We could try and do the 3/18/43 mission, I believe that is twenty aircraft, or build up a varity of aircraft representing each squadron for each year at Molesworth. Sixteen planes. We recently finished a permanent display depicting the history of the Tuskegee Airmen at the Lewis A. Jackson Regional Airport in Greene County, Oh. We have an ongoing project to supply aircraft flown by the 357th Fighter Group to the Springfield, Oh ANG. We have quite a presence at the Air Force Museum, as well. I would greatly appreciate a reply if you feel that your association would be interested in our offer. These do take quite sometime to build.

My brother Todd and I brought Al back to the 2000 reunion. Al is now in an assisted living facility in Bloomfield NJ. My original message is attached, showing old email address. Old message: Hi, I'm the son of Alfred Hollritt who was the ball gunner on the Johnson crew. I had Al over in 2000 for the reunion. I purchased a copy of the book "Winged Warfare" by Hap Arnold and Ira Eaker from my local used book store. The inscription inside was for a Lt. Robert E. Wade, Air Corps, with an address in Claude, TX. A quick internet White Pages search turned up the fact that an 88 year-old Robert E. Wade apparently still lives at that same address in Claude TX. Another search turned up the fact that a Robert E. Wade was a member of the 303rd, but that he is listed as deceased on this website. Can anyone tell me if the two are one and the same, or is the Robert E. Wade of the 303rd not of Claude, TX? I would like to reunite Mr. Wade with his book, or to his family if he is deceased.

I recently lost my mother and found and read some old letters from her brother, my uncle, who was killed in WW11. I always knew he was in the Airforce, but was surprised to read in one of his letters, mention he made of his group, The Hell's Angels. As he put it, "a tough bunch, maybe you've read of them in the news." I had never known the origin of what we know today as The Hell's Angels and looked on the internet to see if there was a connection. I would love to know if there is anyone alive from the 303rd, who remembers Joseph Quinlan. His first name was Alexander, but he went by Joseph. He was handsome, intelligent, poetic and from what I've heard and read in his letters, an incrediblly fine person. He had been recently married before he went to war, and spoke in his letters about how much he loved his bride, Carol. He had such a love and appreciation for his 7 siblings and his parents. Thank you. Peg Bankert

Dear Webmaster: I am impressed with the quality of your website. (Perhaps a reflection of your BG, Yes?). We flew with the 15AF, 450th BG, 723rd SQ out of Manduria, Italy. HOLIDAY GREETINGS TO ALL

Bettie and I are doing our best to handle various ills and ailments as gracefully as we can, and feel very fortunate that we have been able to be together for coming on 60 years. We also feel very lucky we live Hawaii.

After a hot September and October, it seems winter has arrived. We had our first snow two days ago (atop Mauna Kea), and our nights are getting into the high 60s. We have had to dig out the electric heater and extra blankets.

I was thinking today of our first Christmas eve after our marriage. Bettie was working in Huntington, West Virginia, and living with her parents. I was sitting in the sergeants Club at Snetterton Heath in England, thinking of my new bride of 2+ months and dripping tears in my beer, while listening to Bing Crosby singing White Christmas on the juke box.

We had returned from bombing an air field in Germany late that afternoon. Bad weather had kept us from landing at our home base at Molesworth , and we ended up at the 96h Bomb Group base. The rest of our crew had taken a bus (truck) back to Molesworth, and the pilot and I had stayed over to fly the plane back.

Thinking back to it, I think how much better we had it than the poor guys who have been Bushwhacked (a friend’s term) in Iraq and are spending Christmas there. I mourn for those who died, or left body parts there, and I pray for the safe return of all those who have not yet returned, or are still to be sent there. Best regards to All.

It is with deep regret and sadness that I report the death of my Father, Chris Balzano Sr of Clifton Heights, PA on Nov.18th, 2003 at the age of 82. Dad was very proud of his service with the 8AF and in particular the 303rd BG (358th Sqd). He was stationed at Molesworth from approx Dec. '43 till the end of the war in May '45. He flew over 30 missions with the bulk of them coming from 12/43 to 5/44. He was a great guy and a great Dad to my 4 sisters and me. Our Mother passed away only last February and we don't think he ever got over that, having been together just shy of 60 years. Your website is fantastic and I know he enjoyed photos of the base, his crew photo, etc. If anyone remembers my Dad I sure would like to hear from you.

This is a very comprehensive site. I've been able to find a good deal of information about my first cousin, Robert Blumenthal, who was in the 360th BS. He died early this year and was very closed-mouthed about his part in the war. I plan to give his 3 children memberships to this organization, as well as take one for myself.

Would like to get Info from anyone who flew with or had family that sent any information about Lt. Paul S. Tippet. He flew with, Jacob Fredericks, Arthur Pentz, Jack Roller, Robert Cogswell and Carl J Fyler. Paul Tippet was my Uncle and I never really knew anything about him. Thank you, Richard Oakes

My Uncle was a navigator on a B-17 during WWII and even though I am only 34, I have always had a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for every single brave man that served in any capacity during the Second World War. But even as a young child, I felt a tremendous amount of pride after my uncle shared stories and photos ( which unfortunately were thrown away by accident by someone who did not know there value) of his various sorties over Germany. I thank each and every one of you that served and gave so much. I find it dis-heartening that it has taken so long for this country to acknowledge the sacrifice that was given to protect this country and make us into the greatest nation in the world. Thank you so much for your courage and selflessness. Bless you all.

My father, Marcus (Marc) Shamban, was a member of the 358th BS of the 303rd -- the navigator in Maxey's Crew. Dad passed away at the age of 80 on November 24th, 2003. He never talked much about the war at all (I can remember exactly twice he discussed it), so we'd be interested in hearing from anyone who knew Dad so we could learn more about what his war experience was like. Thanks.
