Our uncle, Ernest Gendron, was a member of Walt Mayer's crew, 358th BS. He never discussed his combat experiences during his lifetime and we are discovering that part of his life through the BGA and its members and through the numerous publications that have been written about the 303rd. The extraordinary sacrifices of those who served in the 303rd require those of us that followed them to honor them and to assure that they not be forgotten.

I just wanted to congratulate you on an EXCELLENT site. The profusion of photos especially has helped me get a feel for what it was like in WW2 England with the AAF. I originally found your site
because I'm interested in A-2 jackets and got to your A-2 page. After that I came to your crew photos which are an amazing record! I personally am interested in WW2 and in my studies have come to see that the air war over Europe was the second most important area of the war after the Eastern Front, and the Russians would not have been able to win their battle with the Wehrmacht if not for the destruction of the Luftwaffe wrought by the 8th Air Force and its twin bombing/ bomber escort campaign. Anyway- I go on but congratulations on you excellent site!, Jeff Thurston, Oakland

I had the fortune to attend two hangar dances while at RAF Molesworth, My most treasured memory of my time in England was the privilege to meet a few of a few of the 303rd at their reunion there in that
hangar on what is left of a runway that saw so many young men grow up and so many never get the chance. I had the opportunity to talk and shake hands that night with more American heroes than most
will ever meet in a life time. A few weeks ago, I saw the movie "A band of brothers." I'll not take anything away from those brave men, but if ever was A band of brothers, It rest in the hearts of the those that climbed aboard their ships and flew them into eternity. God be with you and protect you.
My hero's are few
and their numbers grow old
but for those who knew
It's a story untold
It is engraved on a wall
In a place far away
I cant finish this. I can only say that it was a proud moment in my life to walk the ground that you walked and to have met some of you, I chased you out to the bus that night as it was loading. And in the rain, shook as many hands as I could. My hero's are few, But if you met me that night, My Hero was you.
God bless.

mentions High Wycombe in a letter to his sister. I can't seem to get any info on 823 air engineer sq. Has anyone heard of them? My dad is deceased. Thanks!

having just received info on tickets for the dedication "TRIBUTE TO A GENERATION" celebrations from may 27-30th '04 of the NATIONAL WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL in Washington,D.C. i am alarmed that of the YES!!!,16 million in Americans served in uniform in WWII,only fewer than one in ten adults recognize that fact., those figures do not include the home front workers/contributors.. there is no charge
to place a name in the Registry , by calling the 1 800 639 4992 or web site WWW.wwiimemorial.com only about 1.3 million have registered. all must have some kinfolk that should be entered in this
Registry.. if you have not ,please pronto do this in reverence to those that served.

I would like to say what a great website you have here.
Well done to all for setting it up. I found this site when surfing the net for information about two Planes that had a dog fight over Hampshire (Uk) in 1944 Both were shot down and crashed 2 miles
apart. I found them with my friends when we were metal detecting in October this year. When surfing that net for the information about our two Planes for the story that I have written. I came across
your site it is the best I have ever seen on the net. The photos show you just what its like back then for those Brave Young Men.

Just wanted to thank everybody that has helped me out with my research on B-17F (the Witches Tit). I have also obtained a copy of Brian O'Neill's book on the 303rd BG and am very impressed with it.
It will be a few months before I finish the model of the Witches Tit. Unfortunately I do not have decals for the tail art or for the other side of the nose but i will do my best to make it look like
the real plane. Hopefully I will be able to post a picture of it on the site when I am done.
Thank you all once again and God bless..

Dear Sirs,
Is it possible to retrace the activities of a former 303rd BGA pilot after WWII? I'm wondering if Lt. Col Nelson B. O'Bierne flew B-47s or B-52s in Korea or Vietnam. I met him in Dayton Ohio in 1955. He is buried in Arlington Nat. Cem. with his 3 sons that died in a house fire. I would like to fill in the blanks after WWII. He was my Dads best friend and my HERO.

Just web surfing and always interested in military information. My dad was a 30-year Navy veteran. 1936 - 1966. Through some great years. Was a graduate of the Lakehurst, NJ Lighter-Than-Air
School of 1937 and was one of the sailors holding the tail section landing lines of the Hindenburg when it crashed. (What stories he told!) He logged over 3,000 hours on the dirigible Los Angeles.
Served on the Omaha, Cincinnati, Pacific Fleet in WWII, Point Cruz (in Korea) as a Chief Machinist and retired a CWO3. He loved airplanes, history and the military. I am always interested in history
of our great men and women of the military. As a military "brat" I am just so proud of all of you! And try to make sure the world recognizes what you gave to us and never forgets you!

Dear Sir,
Hello, I am a museum assistant who works at the American Air Museum in England, and I have a query about the B17 flying fortress. I hope you don't mind me contacting you, but I got your address from
your excellent web site and was hoping you could help me out. For a number of weeks now, a colleague and myself have been arguing about the precise function of the small hatch that is in the
plexiglass nose, just to the left of the glass bomb aiming panel. I have been led to believe that this was for reaching through and cleaning the panel, but my colleague refuses to accept this. I was
wondering whether you could shed any light on the matter for us, or whether you perhaps know of some one who I could contact for more information? Ideally, my colleague will not be happy until a
bombardier has confirmed what he used to use the hole for! I hope that you can help to resolve this debate,
Thank you in advance, Adam Kendall

Veteran's Day tribute from a grandson mentioned a 303rd BG member who was a POW... I was assigned to the 303rd Tactical Missile Squadron from 1986 to 1988...we were activated with a different mission
during the cold war...our wing commander had a sign on his vehicle naming it the Thunderbird...we had a great deal of respect for the members of the 303rd BG who went before. As I recall there were a
couple of Medal of Honor winners in the group, one of whom we were privileged to meet during our short period as an active wing. I'm glad I found your site and will visit it periodically. Might be fun
to connect members of the WWII unit with the cold war unit!

My husband came across the photo of the Howard D. Gravrock crew while looking thru the web site. The fellow in the front row far right position-the good looking guy with the dimples is my father, Charles L. Gerstel. He was the bombardier. He was born August 26, 1920 and passed away April 16, 2001. He would have been thrilled and amazed to see this photo on the web. We have this photo and I've looked at it many times but it still brought a tear to my eyes when I saw it on this site. I can't wait to show it to my mother when she comes up north in December. She may be able to identify some of the other fellows in the picture. I know they attended some of the reunions. Thank you for making my day. By the way I wasn't even a twinkle in my father's eye yet when this photo was taken.
Thank you for this site. Janice

My father was stationed at RAF Alconbury, 1972-1975. I noticed that you were missing a little bit of Molesworth's history on your history page. From '72-'74 i attended Jr. High at Molesworth. we
used quonset huts for class rooms, ran long distance around old airstrip, and used remodeled hangar for gym. I don't know how long it was used as a school, only that it was while I was there.
While I was there they were doing some work in one of the buildings. they removed a drop ceiling and found a mural painted on the upper wall. I think i remember a map of England, and several GI's
from several branches. My father may have a copy.

I am the nephew of pilot Howard Bohle. He was a B-17 pilot with the 427th Squadron, 303 Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He was from Forbes, North Dakota. He and his crew were shot down early in their tour of duty during a mission to bomb Berlin on April 29, 1944 and spent time as a POW in Stalag Luft III in Sagan. After the war and his release as a POW, he married my aunt, Blanche Babcock.
As a kid I loved to hear stories about the B-17 and made several large B-17 models for him. He really wouldn't tell me much about his experiences as a B-17 pilot and his time as a POW. He is since
passed away and I would like to hear from any of his former crew members, his squadron mates, people that knew him back in the states during training or former POW's from Stalag Luft III.
I have several newspaper articles that I would be glad to send copies of to you to add to your collection and would appreciate any thing you remember about him.
Thanks for your assistance and most of all thanks for the service that you gave to protect our great country and the freedom that so many take for granted. Sincerely Yours, Donald Babcock

The site is looking great!! Keep up the good work!! My father is Orall Gustafson and was on Werner Goering's crew so we are always interested in perusing the history of his incredible service to his country. My father has been the highlight of several local newspapers of late as folks here in the area are interested in his many years of service and his stories (35 missions over Germany) of the 3 wars in which he had direct involvement: WWII, KOREA and a tour in Vietnam. My Dad turns 80 the day after Veterans Day and we are so blessed to have him here with us; he is so proud to have been a part of the 303rd..God Bless and thank you for keeping the memories alive!!
My Dad's Hell's Angels' jacket that flew with him on ALL his missions was stolen when he was staying in California. IS there a source for possibly replacing these authentic items?? He was just
so down when he found it to be gone, I'd like to try to replace it if possible even though it wouldn't be "that" jacket it would be one from the 303rd...that would mean so much. If you have any info
I'd sure appreciate it. Very Best Regards, Carol Gustafson

Veteran's Day is fast approaching and for my family and the 303rd it will be a bit more significant this year. My father served as a pilot with the 303rd and a couple of tough years in Germany as a
POW. He passed away last year, but he is not forgotten! We will never forget. My nephew, Cory, wanted to be sure that my father, his grandfather, would never be forgotten and also that his comrades
in the 303rd along with all veterans would never be forgotten. For his BSA Eagle project, Cory began a drive for a veteran's memorial in their new cemetary in Highland, Utah. His ambitious project
grew into a memorial featuring a larger-than-life statue depicting an event when my father saved the life of a friend and fellow pilot on one of Hitler's death marches. That statue will be dedicated
on November 11th at 12:30 PM. The public is invited. It has been a remarkable experience to do my small part in helping with this wonderful effort. Many have helped and yet there is more to be done.
Those involved are going ahead with the dedication despite the fact that not all the money has been raised. The artist, Dennis Smith, is donating all of his profits, but there are costs beyond that
which need to be covered. If you want to be a part of this wonderful project, you can donate $100 and a granite paving stone will be placed on the grounds of the memorial with your inscription on it.
You can say something like, "In memory of my father..." or simply, "God bless America!" The engraver is also donating his time, as is the landscaper. So many are giving their share and more, it's
inspiring. Some have donated $5000, for which they will receive a small bronze copy of the sculpture and many blessings from God. Call Cory Cosgrave, the Boy Scout, at (801)756-5065) or write to
Highland City, 5378 West 10400 North Highland, UT 84003, if you want to help honor and remember our heroic friends and family. Thank you for listing and for your service to protect our liberty! Some photos of the bronze statue in progress are here.

My name is Michelle. I'm the grand-daughter of Paul Chennault, Jr., who was a member of the 303rd Bomb Group during 1944-45, I believe. He was a navigator on B-17s, and Jack Magee was the pilot. I was so surprised to see a photo of him and his crew on this website! I would love to have any info I can get my hands on, since my grandpa passed away in March 2002. Thank you!

I research O'Beirne's around the world and found Nelson Boyd O'Beirne here. Through one of those mysterious events, which have happened many times in the past in this type of research, I found Craig R. Parsons who has been documenting the life of Boyd O'Beirne and his gallant service to our country. Research results on O'Beirne's, as completed, are posted at www.obeirnefamily.mcmail.com. I hope, with Craig's help, to add Boyd O'Beirne's history to our site in a few months. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knew Boyd or who has information about him.

I have since discovered that my father- in- law was on a plane they named Jerry Jinx, but the tail art had not been completed. They were on a mission and the plane was shot up pretty badly. They
took another plane out and that was the plane that he was shot down in. From what I understand the Jerry Jinx was given to another crew, which later appears to have suffered the same fate. My father
in- law's name is Wilfred Dennis. He was the Ball Turrett Gunner. And was around 20 at the time and spent 14 months in a POW camp. He just celebrated his 80th birthday this past September!

Any names/information would be appreciated. As your site mentions, Ted Woddrop trained with the RCAF before transferring to the USAAF. RCAF # R83219 discharged 12-10-42.
Did the 303 BG Jack Rolfson train with the RCAF? Was he from Chattanooga, TN/Omaha NE?

Several days ago I saw again the movie "Memphis Belle"
and it sparked my interest in checking out some
websites on WW2 'nose art'. This led me to your
wonderful website.
I am not writing because of the nose art or the
*amazing* website that you have put together - I am
writing because of the tears that I have in my eyes
reading about and seeing the pictures of all of the
different crews, pilots, navigators, gunners,
bombardiers, ground crews, etc.
I know that a quick email isn't a very proper way
to convey the words that I want and need to say, but
I am hoping that this short note might reach anyone
that was part of the 303rd, or to any other US vet
that might read this.
I am incredibly, incredibly proud and thankful for
the sacrifices of all of those that served... that
left the comfort and safety of their homes and loved
ones and responded to the call of duty. Sadly, some
never returned, having given the ultimate sacrifice
for their country.
Because of these sacrifices, I can sit here a free
man- typing away on a computer, in the best and finest
country that has ever existed - its greatness and
glory due to the fine, fine people that said "YES" when they
were asked to serve. Your service will NEVER, NEVER be
forgotten (well, as long as I and my family have
breath, anyway!)
I wish it were possible to now meet and thank every
person that served in the 303rd, but I certainly
know that cannot happen now . . . If this
email is being read by the webmaster, then I'd
say you've done a GREAT JOB in assembling an
incredibly useful and valuable resource!!

Hello!
A friend of mine whose family lived in Tunisia in 1943 had his grandfather who made acquaintance with James F. Green, pilot with 359 BS. He received him warmly at home during his stay ...... then James
left for Italy or England and he had no further notice...... As far as I learnt from your site, James F. Green was reported MIA after a mission over Germany in october 1944....... Could you tell me more?
As for me , I was a kid of 10 when US troops landed in Algeria in november 1942, I lived in Blida, important airfield and airport base for USAF and RAF.. all that period 42-45 remains in my mind: young
airmen welcomed at my home very friendly, candies, badges, stamps, rides on their jeeps & Dodges.... That was a paradise in my little boy universe...
I have so many "souvenirs".........
Thank you for the freedom that you brought at that time and keep going strong Friendly Yours Lčon

Many, Many years ago (about 30 actually) I was visiting the science museum in Manchester, England. There was a painting for sale within the museum foyer, showing the 303 BG fortress "Thumper" heading
out to Germany. (point of view was from the rear and slightly lower, Con trails streaming out behind). Title of this work was "THUMPER GOES TO WAR."
I was 17 years old when I saw this picture (I'm 47 Now). For 30 years I've searched for a copy or print of this artwork, without success, I have not got the faintest idea why this picture has affected me
so, I remember seeing it as though it was yesterday and could probably even draw it from memory.
O.K. Gentlemen, now it's your turn. Have you ever seen or heard of this painting? Any info you guys can get hold of would be of great interest.
Best Regards, Keith Jennison.

A few weeks ago I discovered your site and thanked all American servicemen and women for their help in the last war. Today I was searching for a site on the Typhoon fighter. I discovered a site who's
members look for downed aircraft, mainly from the second world war. Strange to tell they mentioned the crash of a B17 not thirty miles from me. It was No 44-6504. It took off from Molesworth in 1944 to bomb
the marshalling yards in Ulm. The raid was aborted due to bad weather. Crews were ordered to dump their bombs in the North Sea and return home. 44-6504 lost its way and crashed on a hill in
Northumberland. With a full bomb load!!! The navigator Holcombe and tog Turner were killed. The rest of the crew Berly, Delaney, Smith, Kaufmann, Schwieferstein, Co-Pilot Hardy and Pilot Kyle escaped with
minor injuries. Soon after being rescued by local farmers the plane blew up. Regards Hilton Stanness

I was surfing channels on the tube and stopped on a show about motorcycles. Long story, short said the Hell's Angels were named after the 358th Bomb Group from Molesworth. [Editor's note: In fact, there is no connection between the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and the 303rd BG]
I'VE BEEN THERE! One of those contractors you mention at the JAC. Not much of runways anymore but I do remember seeing the church. They made the bomb depot into a fitness center. I was greatly impressed with all the wood carvings that are spread all over the building depicting all the bomb groups that were stationed there. As a fan of WWII, I'm 49 and have worked on the flight line at many airshows that have WWII aircraft (SO COOL!) these seem to be pretty heady times! I don't think people younger than me can really appreciate everything you guys went through. Now is the time for TV and high tech weapons that
allow one to kill the enemy from a distance while sitting in an easy chair. B-17s may have been high tech at the time, but think of the hardships one still had to go through while flying at high
altitude, long missions, enemy fighters etc. You guys had true grit and tenacity. Even though I have never been in the service, I for one will never forget ANY person who has fought in the defense of
our country. From listening to WWII and Viet Nam vets I know all to well that being at war could be a lot of fun as well as complete terror. Thanks for all you've done, Steve

Firstly, I have just spent over three hours on your site and love it. Merci. Unfortunately I am not too computer friendly and would like to post a message and perhaps join your organization. My uncle,
Philip M. Schoch was killed during the war and is buried in Madingley. I'm trying to find the name of the plane he was in and any accurate details about his missions, etc. I understood that on 9 Nov.
1944 his plane and another crashed whilst still in formation at Molesworth AFB before take-off due to fog. Is there a way to clarify this information? Also in your listing it states RADIO as
position...what does this mean? I think you are wonderfully dedicated people who merit much respect. I have visited Molesworth,in 1994 for the 50th anniv., and had a drink at the MOLE HOLE...it was
lovely. Thank you for any help in guiding me towards better knowing my uncle. I have a photo and perhaps other things I would like to send on to include in his part of the memories you so kindly
guard. Please let me know how this is best received on your part. Thank you for your help and carry on.

My Dad was Peter F. Kearns, MSgt Engr, 303rd BG, Hells Angels, 427th BS.
He was stationed at Molesworth England from the beginning of the War until he came home in 1945. He was part of that group who were on their way to Pearl when the Japanese dropped their bombs...they
turned back to the US and he was then assigned to Molesworth and spent much of the war as a crew chief. Dad passed in 1994.
Recently I visited the 303rd museum in Savannah and I was overwhelmed, however I found very little on my Dad. A great man named Quentin Hargrove provided me some valuable information, however I've
lost track of Mr. Hargrove and I am so anxious to learn more. If you have any information, please let me know via email.
Mom is still living, in her mid-80's and while she is with us, I would very much like to provide her with whatever I could regarding Dad in the War. He was very quiet about that part of his life.
Thank you all for sharing anything you can.

I was browsing the web after reading a novel regarding the 8th Air Force exploits in Europe. The book's called Under An English Heaven by Robert Radcliffe, and the unit is based in Suffolk. It was
very moving, and the author went to great lengths to get the message across as to the amount of sacrifice given by American airmen. I am not ashamed to say that I cried at the end of the book - and
I'm 21! I was just wanting to find out more information about USAAF flyers and experiences during WW2. I am hoping to get into contact with survivors so that they can tell me what it was like. Reading a book
is one thing, someone telling you is another different experience altogether.
Thank you for reading this. May your memories live on in all of us for your great sacrifice. We salute you.

My father, Fred R. Meyer, served with the 303rd in the 358th BS, Lawrence J. Stein crew.
My dad passed away August 1, 1986. I have all his memorabilia from WWII, including many pictures of this crew, as well as their plane, "Fearless Fosdick", after it was shot down over France Aug. 15,
1944, the story you tell on the Stein crew page. I would be more than happy to scan them and share them with you. If by chance there's anyone out there that ever knew my father, please get in touch
with me. I would love to talk to you. I will be forever proud of my father and all that served with him.

My father was in the 444th Sub Depot during WWII. His name was Antonio (Tony) Ippolito. He has since passed away. I was wondering if it is possible to somehow contact any surviving
members of his crew. He was a sheet metal worker 555. His serial number is 39 130 241. Also, on your personnel page after my Dad's serial number is "444 A/D". What do the letters A/D stand for? One more
question. With all my Dad's papers from his time during WWII, there is an unsigned semi-official looking document that reads like this; To Whomsoever these presents shall come greeting; This is to
certify that (unsigned) in a (unsigned), as (unsigned), has flown across the ATLANTIC OCEAN and has hereby become a full member of THE COURT OF KING NEPTUNE'S AIRMEN-In witness wherof, I have hereby set my hand, this (unsigned) day of (unsigned) 194(unsigned). Signed at the bottom of the page by; Jack F. Mayhew Capt. A.C.- Paul D. Wilburn 1st .LT AC- John F. Worden Capt. A.C...... Have you ever seen such a document? There are 2 hand printed B17's on the top left and right and a hand printed picture of the globe in the center. On the bottom right is a gold seal with a red and blue ribbon that reads in the
center; Member King Neptunes Airmen.......... Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, John Ippolito

Neat site. I've seen pictures of the B-17 losing it's left side horizontal stabilizer on a number of sites but never the outcome. Can anyone tell me if it was able to RTB? Also, if anyone knows how
it happened. I know crazy, random things happen in war, but that plane is almost blocking the view of the ground it is so much in view. Were the bombs released early by mistake or does the bombardier
only see a small area through his sight? Been curious for a while, if anyone has any info., I would sure appreciate it. Thanks, Doug G.

I came into possession of his wartime memorabilia. I would

Just wondering out loud if any of the Castle crew from "Thumper" #41-24579 which crashed at Lulsgate Bottom on 23rd. Jan 43 are still amongst us. As a young lad living there in the late 40s to mid 50s
I found a head set which my grandfather told me must have came from an American bomber that crashed there, and that at that time he had gone out to help the men who had parachuted down. That head set
became a treasured possession of mine until we came to Australia in 1958. Sorry now that I left it behind. By a series of coincidences I found your fantastic site and thru it a childhood friend. Would
like to say I am in awe of what you all did for us back then and thank you.

I hope you can help me out. I was on another site last night but I can't remember what page. I saw your page and felt your site sounds better and I just might receive an answer from you.
My mother was a Front Line Nurse during World War II. She enlisted in the Army Nursing Corp and entered with the rank of 2nd.Lt. By the time her hitch was over, she made 1st.LT. and were days away
from her captain bars. But that's not the story. The story is that my mother was in the D-Day invasion on June 6,1944. She landed on Omaha Beach which was the worst beach out of all the beaches.
She was part of a top secret mission where she and three corpsmen followed the front line when they landed. The army claims on their web site that the nurses came six days later. That was for the
rest of the nurses... not my mother! From the moment the front platform of their boat went down, she was in the heart of battle. This is only one story she told us amongst others. Now here is where
I hope you can help me.
Twenty years ago, After writing to Sen. Frank Lautenberg, I found out my mother was involved in 5 major campaigns one including Normandy. She never picked up her medals nor was she getting the
benefits due her. Finding this out, she was honored at our home in Jersey City with the senator, a brigadier general from the pentagon and numerous T.V. stations documenting the day. I
interviewed my mother later on to find out exactly what she was involved in. Turns out, besides the battles, she was involved in the liberation of the Concentration Camps. I have put together her
memoirs. Her memoirs are now in manuscript form. Problem is no publisher will publish the memoirs because they claim there were no nurses on Omaha Beach when the front landed.
There are many more stories and this letter can go on and on. Can you please help me in getting her memoirs published? There's so much history here that I feel this generation should know about
especially when there are groups saying the holocaust never happened! I would appreciate it you would e-mail me with a possible solution so I can get this show on the road. For the record...my
mother's name was Lt. Anna A. Donato. Her outfit was the Third Army 7th. Infantry. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Reading through your father's journal really gives one a sense of the perilous nature of warfare and of the vulnerability of the bomber aircrews. I was flight engineer-top turret gunner on Lt. Ray Hofmann's crew with the 358th BS. On April 24,1944 We were on our twenty second mission. Our target was at Oberpoffenhofen,Germany. We were badly shot up so we turned for Switzerland, where we were interned.
After about nine months of internment, one of our waist gunners (SGT. JOHN BAHR) and I escaped. We returned to Molesworth. We were flown back to the U.S. where we were classified as escapees and given a choice of assignments. I chose to go to Adams Field at Little Rock, Arkansas (my home town at that time), where I served as hangar chief for the duration of my service.

I was researching the USAAF and Northrop For 15 years. Since 1982 for F.O.S. World Aircraft Research Group Inc. 1986 was when 4 additional members were put on with a Grant supplied by our government as being a non profit seeking group. Northrop was commenced in FULL COMMITMENT in '85. In conjunction with R.A.A.F involvement with the USAAF commitment in the islands the overall research was a fantastic and monumental undertaking and we were proud to see it through. My sadness being that as all our older friends are meeting all their mates with GOD. WE ALL NEED TO NOT LET THE NEW GENERATION FORGET. By the time the research was totally completed we [6 of us] went over time by 6.5 months and the research concluded in June 98 AND $3.00 over budget. I have indirectly kept going since then because I gained many good friends in Base historian offices and the 303rd was part of 2 major groups that was not completed by my colleagues at the time.
Keep up your good work. Best and Sincere Regards.

For the many families who lost a "true hero" while
protecting all our personal freedoms in this country,

information provided about all 303rdBGA crew members.
Lt. James S Nix KIA 8-19-43 was my mother's dearest childhood
hero. She has endured years of personal turmoil not knowing

knew very little from the front due to security etc.
For those who did not know Lt. Nix, he was an intelligent,

I was reading the crew incident for the Forrest E. Miller crew-427th BS. I am concerned that their may be an error in the report. My grandfather was Kenneth R. Unfortunately he is no longer with us, but I do know that he was a man of character and honor and would not claim credit where it wasn't do. Please let me know if you have any information on this or him. Keep up the great work! Thank you.

I have a deep seated interest in B17 history. I grew up in the 1940s in Halls, TN, home to the Dyersburg USAAF B17 training base. The base was abandoned after the war. I used to sit on the roof of my house that was in the flight path for landing on one of the runways, and could see inside the bomb bay when the planes came over. As a Boy Scout, we were given a tour of the base in 1944. At one time, there were photographs of the base with B17s on the flight line, on the web. The photos were apparently take at the base's inauguration. I am unable to find much history regarding the base. I understand that the USAAF did not like the facility. While attending college in Memphis, TN in 1951, I used to board the "Memphis Belle" when it was on display, and relatively open to the public. I would greatly appreciate receiving any data on the base and it's history. I am scheduled to finally get a ride in a B17 next Wed., the "Aluminum Overcast" belonging to the EAA.

Cyfarchion o Gymru, Greetings from Wales.
Yesterday, I walked to the summit of Arenig Fawr in the great wilderness of the Migneint north-west of the town of Bala. I arrived at the foot of the mountain at 11.00, on the once a week bus from
Blaenau Ffestiniog. I first climbed the neighbouring Moel Llyfnant, the summit of which was reached at 13.30 and then crossed the col and walked the whole length of the Arenig Ridge, reaching the
summit at 15.45. I have known for years about the terrible accident which took the lives of the [James N. Pratt] young crew of the B-17 42-3124, but it was only as I was looking at the memorial stone (which is
still in good condition and surrounded by recently laid poppies, crosses and wreaths) that I realised that the accident happened sixty years to the very day. I was 3 years of age at the time. It
was a very poignant moment and prayed for the crew. I then descended the mountain to catch the returning bus at 17.08 for the 18 mile return trip to Blaenau - with only 5 minutes to spare. The
temperature was 90'F, although there was a breeze on the mountain.

web sites which give me,and many others, so much pleasure to read. The sacrifice of all Americans will never be forgotten. Thank you.

My father, Don J. Rademacher was in the US Air Force and was a POW at Stalag 17. He died at age 45 of a heart attack. He sent my mother a booklet of handwritten poems while a prisoner. I want to
check the authenticity of his poems and possibly get them published to share with others. I'm not sure how to proceed.

A while back there was some talk about POW's being entitled to a medal/ribbon. My uncle SSGT James C. Burke, 458th BS was a POW in Stalag 17B. He is now deceased, can I apply for this medal/ribbon on his behalf? Thanks. Bill Burke

Hi, I am Timothy Avenia, and my father is James J. Avenia (who has passed in 1992) would often occasionally talk of the war. It took some prodding on my part. His experience never really left him,
and he would talk in his sleep of his war time buddies. He went to graduate college, and have a wonderful wife (my mother) and six children. I have his War Diary which was government issue. I never
knew his nickname was "Dago" until I read it. He outlined and spoke of each of the 36 missions flew over Germany. I often hear of how father's are their son's heros, and this is an understatement
with what is in this book. If anyone out there knew my dad, I would be glad to hear from you. Thanks, and God Bless You. Tim Avenia.
