Dear Sir, I am currently researching a TV series for a major US broadcaster about the presence of the US Air Force in Britain. One part will look at the war years (actually up until 1948), the other will look at the years from 1948 to the present day. At the early stages of research, I am looking into tracking down veterans and first hand accounts of the war years in particular - interesting, anecdotal, funny and heroic stories that illustrate what it was like for both US airmen and the local population in England during these times. Your website was recommended to me during my research. It is indeed a remarkable achievement. I would love to get in touch with you to find out if you know of any stories the veterans of the 303rd Bomber Group might have of their time in England. Molesworth is of particular interest to us, because US Air Force activity there extends to this present day. In the hope of a response, Yours sincerely, Hugo Macgregor -- Hugo Macgregor Principal Films Picture House, 65 Hopton St., Bankside, London SE1 9LR, UK Tel: + 44 207 928 9287. Fax: + 44 207 928 9886. My mother is the niece of S/Sgt Alfred E. Cockrum. I had recently found photographs of him with the rest of his crew and a friend of mine, who owns a WWII Museum led me to your web site. I would appreciate any information you might have on S/Sgt Cockrum. Thank you, Carrie Nanson

As the Commander of the US European Command Joint Analysis Center, located at RAF Molesworth, I want to provide a special invitiation to all 303rd veterans and family members to visit us any time you are in England. The JAC buildings have hallways full of 303rd pictures and plaques and they serve as a constant reminder to all of us today of the courage and dedication we need today in our own fight against terrorism. Best to call ahead if you can make it this way as security, given present circumstances, is a concern and access to the base and our buildings is something best done in advance. You can call my front office and ask for help from our Protocol shop at 44-1480-842496. This year's annual "Hangar Dance" will be Saturday, 01 June. Happy New Year to all. It's an honor to be a part of the 303rd heritage Captain Tony Cothron, US NAVY, JAC Commander

I was a late comer. I was a navigator (1954) in B-47's and B-52's. I am grateful to those who preceded me in aerial bombardment. I was always in the USAF however, the first uniforms issued were Army. As an aviation cadet, I was always aware the customs and courtsies I was learning had been developed by a group of officers that I wanted to be like. Thanks, Will Shreveport, LA

Thanks to all the individuals who gave information about the Lorraine American Cemetery. This past week my sister visited the cemetery near St. Avoid, France. She was able to visit the grave of our cousin T/Sgt Donald W. Bourlier. The cemetery caretaker was kind enough to accompany my sister and to tell her about the cemetery. When she came to the plots for the Cureton crew she found out that one of the plots is mismarked. The correct info is as follows: S/Sgt Joseph A. Burford (Ball turret gunner) #33437601 - is in plot B-13-33 not Plot K-25-4. Earl E. Brosius, Flt O, 427th Bomb SQ, 303rd Bomb GP(H), Ohio, Aug 15, 1944 is in Plot K-25-4. I hope that this information will be helpful to your organization and to their families.

Hello. I found the web site while looking for pictures of the crew that "I think" my uncle was a member of. His name was David D. Fanning, born around 1920. I have several pictures of him while in the service, but my favorite is of him standing next to a B-17 with the nose art saying "Yankee Doodle". The picture was supposedly taken on the deck of an aircraft carrier while off the coast of London during WWII.It's in storage and we're currently searching for that too. I have several other pictures of him in uniform. I'm interested in pictures of that plane, too. If anyone has any info, please feel free to let me know. Thank you very much.

I was just remembering my friend who flew with the 303rd on the "8 Ball". I was an escort for first 303rd Bomb Group reunion held at RAF Molesworth in the summer of 1993. Unfortunatly, I cannot remember my friends name but he was very entertaining! He happily regaled many of us young troops with his pictures and stories of flying with Clark Gable. Or, as my friend would say, "I didn't fly with Clark Gable, he flew with me!" So, curiosity led me to this web site! I have been fortunate enough to be able to go back to Molesworth to see the beautiful memorial dedicated to the 303rd. I am hoping to be able to return soon as my husband's family live in Godmanchester, Huntingdon. I am happy to see such a wonderful web site! Thanks for the hard work to keep our young people informed of the important role the 303rd Bomb Group played in WW II. SFC (Ret) Beverly S. Chain

Hello. I'm seeking information concerning Arnold Siegel. I don't know an awful lot about this man, my grandpa, and I'm hoping that someone has information on him. What I do know is that he flew a bomber named "Southern Comfort" which went down in the English Channel during the second world war. As a result of this crash, he eventually lost his hearing. I may be able to find some more information if needed. If anyone has any information please email. Thank you.

Great site! I found this site after searching for Stalag VIIA and would like to know where you found the Red Cross map at the top of your POW page. I have seen the map in a few different books but I have not been able to obtain a copy of the map, even after repeated inquiries to the Red Cross archives. My grandfather was captured at Anzio and was sent to Stalag VIIA, among others, and I have been trying to locate as much information about POW camps in Germany and Italy with varied success. Thank you for your time and keep up the good work!

At the funeral of Kenneth A Palm on March 7, 2000 a gentleman seated in the rear of the room got up and gave a beautiful speach about Ken and his tour of duty with the 303BG. He left before the family could speak to him and the only thing they know was his first name was Ray. Is there anyone out there that has a clue to who this person could be. The family would like very much to talk to him. I gather from this web site that Ken flew with Darwin Knudson's crew.

You have an outstanding web site! I will forward Lt Col Henry J. Eich's address in Tampa, FL to you soon. According to Henry, his aircraft, 42-3448 was named "PAPER DOLL", I think the name was painted in plain italic all capital letter 6" text in light blue on the left hand side of the nose. I do not think there was any picture with the name. I plan to check next Spring (with a local Burgermeister = mayor) to see if anything of 42-3448 is still on the bottom of Steinhuder Lake. Happy New Year, Arthur

My father was assigned to the 303rd. at Molesworth as a "Radio Operator" assigned to what I believe was a B-17 called, "I've Got Spurs". The nose art was a set of spurs crossed over each other. My father passed away in March 0f 2000. But not until he served 30 years in the Air Force, during WW II, Korea, and Vietnam. He didn't talk much about his experiences, but in a small way this web site brings he and I closer together, thanks. If anyone has any information about this B-17 called, "I've Got Spurs" or about my father, please contact me.

Apropos all the queries we 303rd Vets receive in this forum, I would like to recite an experience I had some years ago. I was "chairing" a meeting of the SSMA (Second Schweinfurt Memorial Assoiation) and many of us were being interviewed. At one point, a news reporter from a prominent newspaper of the area was questioning me and another member of the SSMA who was a Waist Gunner. The newsman asked ... of either of us ... "Which German Fighter plane, in your belief, was the most dangerous?" The Waist Gunner, at my side, was quick to answer. He said, "THE ONE COMING RIGHT AT YOU!" I thought then, and believe to this day, that that was the greatest answer to such a question that I ever heard! I am always reminded that in our War (the one we won) the enemy shot back ...

I wish all my colleagues of the 303rd BGA who served at Molesworth a very Happy Holiday Season, and not to forget Who it is we celebrate this Season. My Christmas of 1944 at Molesworth was a very memorable time for me ... for my late brother, Lt. Col. Emerson Heller, joined me there as a copilot on the Richeson crew. I was Ops Officer of the 359th at the time. We flew in many combat formations together, but, of course, in different planes. He stayed in the Service, I did not. He was KIA in Nam in 1969 and now rests in Arlington. I shall join him there ... when. Brother Emerson eventually got his own crew and flew 33 +/- missions with the 303rd. Each Christmas always takes me back to Molesworth. Cheers! Bill Heller (former CO of 360th Sq.)

Just want to say THANK YOU brave crewmen for your valor and sacrifices in the big one, ww2. As a child in the 50,s I grew up watching the tv show- AIR POWER, the air force version of victory at sea. Recently I had the honor of reading an account of 303rd b-17,s by William F. Miller. I felt like I was in the bomber with you guys. The heavy take offs under power, the flack, the tension of combat, holding on targets, bogies at six o,clock, the smell of the hot 50 cals filling the cabin, and having your birds shot out of the sky by enemy fire and exiliration of a high altitude bailout into nazi land. America is a great country today because you guys paid the price for the rest of us.

Thank you for your very informative and detailed web site. My Grandfather is Col. William Eisenhart. As I get older in life, I find myself wanting to learn more about the 303rd, it's missions and it's people. I'm 42 and have been intrigued with the shape and design of the B-17 ever since I was 5yo when my brother built a model of the Memphis Belle. As I got older and began to understand more of what the airplane was about, the war and why it happened, I began to have a fascination and a deep respect for the men who flew in the war. I read Half a Wing, Three Engines and Prayer and was amazed at the conditions and bravery all of you exhibited during your tours...not knowing if you'd even make it home. I found this site by typing in the 303rd and Voila, up came this site. It is a fantastic way to keep the spirit and memory of the unit alive for future generations. We live only 45 minutes from Wright Airforce base and have spent inumerable trips there...talking with veterans and just taking in the sites. Thank you very much for this site - it's very tastefully done. John M. Domiano

You have the best site I have found. It was easy because I knew my step-father's unit and your 'search' brought up what I was looking for. Capt. Marshall Neubert was my step dad. I am now looking for information on my biological father: Capt. E P Henson, pilot, 8th Air Force, unit unknown. I have a picture of him and another man in front of his B-17, "Me and My Gal" and that is all I have at this time. I have hit about 20 sites but haven't found anything. Any help would be appreciated, I am still looking. My compliments again on such a fine job of supplying such a well organized and thought out source of information. Tom Henson

Dear Sirs: For many years, I wondered how my high school friend died. He was a top-turret gunner-engineer on "Leapin Liz" We met one sunny Saturday in May, 1942. He wanted me to enlist in the Air Corps. I was working in the steel mill, sole means of support of family: Mother, (Dad died in an accident in 1933.), two sisters and three younger brothers. However, I would be free to join in April, 1943, when a younger brother graduated from high school. Back to the purpose of this letter: With help from two research fellows in England, I learned that Tom Reino and the crew of "Leapin Liz" went on the group's sixth mission, the first mission utilizing the new "Combat Box". [I should say here that I also flew with the 8th - 446th. Less than a year after Tom's death, I began my Tour of 35 Missions from Bungay, England 1944 & 45.] The record indicated that they were jumped by twenty, plus Me. 109's. Seven B-17s were lost of the 85 groups that flew that mission. I don't know that Tom has any Kin living at this time. I honored him with an individual plaque placed in the Garden of Honor at the 8thAFHM in Savannah, GA (Pooler). Just this week, I received an email from another 303rd member who saw the plaque. He emailed me. He wants to exchange email regarding Sgt. Reino. In another matter, If your organization; the 303rd or the 358 BS would find it worthwhile to have the returned envelope of a letter I sent to Sgt. Reino, after the crew was lost. It is stamped with "Missing In Action" and other official notes on the envelope. I will offer to send it to whomever would find a more purposeful honor of same, than it's place in my personal WWII Scrapbook. Respectfully, AL Pishioneri, Former S/Sgt., Armorer gunner on "Patriotic Patty" with the 446bg from Bungay, England.

Hello friends. I am writting because I believe that my father-in-law served with the 303rd in 1944. On his second mission, I believe that it was either Magdeburg Krupp works or Magdeburg Marshalling yards, he was shot down and taken prisoner until the end of the war. I believe this action took place in September of 1944. His name is Al Sapak, is 80 years old now, and continues to almaze us with his health and stamina. He is really a cool guy. We had the pleasure recently to view a B-29 and B-24 from the Confederate Air Force and like a great Pilot,he sat in the pilot seat for a few minutes, grinning from ear to ear. I believe that he is active with some former members but I thought if I could surprise him with a little info, it would make his day. Thanks, David.

I'm a nephew of Howard Zeitner, Sgt and BT (I assume this means "Belly Turret") who was a crew member in William C. Fort, Jr.'s crew. He was from Outlook, Montana and was killed over France (I think). His body was not recovered until after the war. I would like to hear from someone who may know a bit more about him and his service before he died (how many missions, how he died-did everyone on the flight perish as well, etc.). Thank you.

For many years I have wanted to identify the B17 that, as an Air Training Corps cadet in England, during World War 2 was able to visit with two friends. The aircraft in question was the Idaho Potato Peeler when it had crashlanded at the RAF Station at Chipping Warden. I wasn't sure if Chipping Warden was the correct airfield until I read Airfield Focus #40 Molesworth. This confirmed it and set me off on my research. Air Training Corps cadet in World War 2, I was able to look over. This particular B17 was Idaho Potato Peeler 41-24565 and it had crashlanded at an RAF airfield called Chipping Warden after a mission to Lorient on January 23rd 1943. I got my information from a book called Airfield Focus #40 Molesworth published in England. As a result of this stroke of luck, I am now in the process of finding out all I can about the plane and it's crew. I am a great admirer of The Mighty Eighth and have been since the war. I have many books, etc., on it. In due course, I will be applying for membership ofthe 303rd BGA as a Friends of the 303rd.

After printing some information from a CD about the 303 Bomb Group to take to my dad, James M. Pierce who flew on Paper Dollie in June and July 1944, I decided to look at this website which was mentioned in the introduction. What a surprise to see his crew picture and that it was donated by him. My parents don't even own a computer, but do I ever have a notebook of stuff to take to them when we celebrate Thanksgiving this weekend. We are very thankful that my dad is still with us and that he has only recently begun to share some of his experiences at Molesworth and in his plane.

Ghost flights
On a darken night like so many in East Anglia
A windmill suddenly turns to face the aerial ghosts
To wave home hordes of bombers
The ancient cathedral bells give ghostly-unheard chime
The locks creak and groan among the waters seeping from fields
Ghost squadrons appear in they’re hundreds, unseen
The memorials beckon, sparkles and gleams
The towers still standing wide open
Those torn down, a shadow, a token
They line up, flares bring forth the needy
The soundless jesters all go unheeded
By us in this age for we can not see
The bombers letting down, some still out at sea
An era gone, for of those returning home
Madingley awakes

I would like to thank the members of the 303rdBGA who sent me information concerning my cousin, Donald Bourlier, who was shot down over Meresberg, Germany. The information has helped me in my search for my relatives who fought in WWII. I would like to contact any of the men who were in the Charles Allen crew as this was the crew to which my cousin Donald was initially assigned. I would like to contact anyone who might have known Donald. Does any one know exactly where the Lorraine American Cemetery near Moselle, France is located? Also, is there a marker to mark the burial plot of the crewmen buried there? My sister will be in France in the next few weeks and she and I will try to locate the grave sith where my cousin is buried. Thaks for all the help. Sincerely, Bob Bourlier
Dewayne Ennett squknchckn@aol.com 21 Nov 01 - Tucson, Az
Dear friends, My name is Dewayne Bennett, "The Squawkin' Chicken Skipper" and I flew my missions with the 384th Bombardment Group, 545th Squadron. We flew with the 303rd and the 379th Bomb Groups, to make up the 41st Combat Wing. My combat time was under Gen'l Travis, and his brother Col. Bill Travis. I got on to this web site through the kind efforts of Richard "Spider" Smith, and it's a good one. It portrays the great efforts of a great bomb group. A few years ago I was honored in meeting one of the best all time leaders of the 8th Air Force, General Lewis Lyle. He flew something like 79 missions with the 303rd and later with the 379th. I had the upmost admiration for him. The gentleman who introduced me to this page "Spider" is proud of his group brags about them, expands a little on his stories, (how could you get upside down over Berlin, and get rid of the bombs) a fine gentleman, and now a friend of mine.

I had the honor of meeting Bliss D. Purington about 6 years ago. He was with the 303rd Bomb Group, 427th Bomb Squadron. He told me of being shot down and becoming a POW. I only talked to him for a few minutes, but felt like I knew him. I was saddened to find out he passed away shortly after I spoke to him. I have a great respect for all who have served our country bravely. God Bless you all.

Greetings, On 19th March 2002 the Reigate Society is presenting a seat to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Society, which will commemorate the crew of the USAF bomber which crashed on Reigate Hill (Surrey,UK) on 19th March 1945. This sad event is not forgotten by local people. The site overlooks the town of Reigate and is kept mown by the National Trust. It will be a very short and simple occasion and Mrs. Dot Edwards, who tried to help at the time and who has campaigned for the site to be marked, will be present. We understand that the plane belonged to the 384th bomber group, part of the 41st CB Wing of the 8th USA Air Force. If anyone can tell us more or would like to send a message for the day, do please get in touch. Claudia Payne, Vice Chairman, Reigate Society (I got the web address from the local newspaper, the Surrey Mirror)

It is with regularity that I check this page. My father was a proud member of the 303rd. He seldom spoke in great detail of his missions during the air campaign over Europe. After being diagnosed with a terminal illness in 1995, I took the opportunity to speak with him often about this time in his life. About a year before his death, a B-17 flew into a small airport near where I currently live. I told him about it and he came down. We were able to board the plane and I got to see him sit in the pilot's seat. Instantly, it seemed that he was transported to a time and place in a much other than that moment. I will never forget the sky reflecting in his crystal blue eyes as he peered out the windshield over the runway in front of him. When we deplaned, I asked, "what was it like?" After a few moments of silence he responded, "...like I was in charge of my own life again." I wanted to pass this memory on to you. Thank you and God bless all of you who served this country and prepared it for us. I hope and pray we don't let you down.

I'm an aviation archaeologist in the UK researching the crash of B17E 41-9098 which we recently re-located during a survey of all aircraft crash sites in our area. The B17 crashed in bad weather on the Craig Berwyn mountainside in Mid Wales on 11th August 1942, sadly all of thecrew were killed. The crew were assigned to the 97th BG 340th BS flying from Polebrook airfield in Northamptonshire, England to Burtonwood airfield in Cheshire, England on a training mission. Eight of the crew were originally posted to the 303 BG 359th BS and must have been transferred in May or early June 1942 to the 97th BG. The original 303BG crew were: Stanley C Aldridge, Kenneth H Branum, Marvin A Koepke, Henry L Gilbert, Stanislaw M Lepa, Leonard H Phillips, Lawrence G Schmitt, Wallace V Sidders. If anyone can tell me anything about the crews service in the 303BG or knows of living relatives I would really appreciate hearing from you.

It reads: To you who answered the call of your country and served in its Armed Forces to bring about the total defeat of the enemy, I extend the heartfelt thanks of a grateful Nation. As one of the nations finest, you undertook the most severe task one can be called upon to perform. Because you demonstrated the fortitude, resoursefulness and calm judgement necessary to carry out that task, we now look to you for leadership and example in further exalting our country in peace. How can I determine if this is the same William J Monahan of the 303rd bomb group . Thank You, Mark Haynes

Looked at 1000s of photos but couldn't find my dad...until I remembered my brother was born in Northampton, England-that lead me to Grafton Airfield and your site. Typed in his name and voila-you made it so easy. But I still didn't know his squadron. His best buddy was Tony Kray-found him in the 358thBS. They were in the picture of the ground personnel. If you would like to know more, I can tell you about 29 of them what dates and where they flew to Couch was the tailgunner, now there is the possiblity that he flew with another crew, but I can't find anything that leads me to belive that.thanks for your time. I am very pleased to see some of the color photographs I made at Molesworth during my tour(1953-1955) there used in the CD/ROM. I sent several black and white as well as color pictures to Molesworth following my return visit there in 1995. Robin Beebe served as a very gracious host for the day, which was a truly rewarding day. My pictures may be the only ones available of the base in the mid-50's. I have a question or two. In 1954-1955, Molesworth was visited occasionally by RAF Canberra bombers. Were these part of the clandestine operations that were going on at the time. I have read that Canberra's were used for reconnaissance over hostile territory about that time? Also, where was the base chapel located during the time the 303rd was at Molesworth? Was it near the two buildings that were used as briefing rooms? The 303rd website is really exceptional in its content. Thanks so much for the enormous amount of time required to make it first class! Your efforts have brought both pride and a new found respect for his role in the freedom of America, especially in light of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 (New York - World Trade Center attacks). Thanks so much for keeping this piece of history alive! Sincerely, Robert G. Luke - Son of George W. Luke, 360th Crew, B17 #42-39781

Lt. Col Frank J. Doherty is my grand-father. I am in possesion of a solid stainless steel model B-17 made out of what is said to be a melted down B-17 propeller; and would like to know more about this family treasure. Thank you for the effort you have taken to help people like me to more fully understand the sacrifice our fathers have made.

I am looking for information on 8th USAAF Mission #488 dated 22 July 1944. My Father Alfred Hollritt (303rd BG 427th Sq.) was stationed at the 305th BG at Chelveston, England at the time as part of the 303rd H2X Radar/Pathfinder B-17G's stationed there. On this night his crew was pulled for a night leaflet raid deep into Bremen, Keil, and or Hamburg Germany. This was in conjunction with the attempt to assassinate Hitler. He wishes he held onto one of the leaflets! He remembers that it was a horrible night for takeoff from England and he was flashing the letter "G" out the tail so the other three aircraft could form up... he never saw them or another aircraft all night! This was a one and only night mission for his crew. You can see two of his crew photos in the 427th section under Lt. C. E. Johnson. Every night the 422nd Sq of the 305th sent a few B-17G's on night leaflet operations, but this night was a one time only run with fighter escort! Twenty seven P-51 Mustangs from the 4th FG (?)8th AF provided Escort for three 305th and four 306th BG B-17G's, bad weather caused two P-51's to crash killing one pilot in a accident just after takeoff, and another on return but that pilot was ok. The 8th AF fighter groups never operated night sorties, yet this night they were up and flying! I gathered most of my info from Roger Freeman's 8th AF Diary, I hear the 305th BG records are in horrible condition. Also due to the secret nature of the 422nd Squadron night operations I am sure some were destroyed, anyone have access to more information about this strange night leaflet raid? Dad and I had a great time at the 303rd reunion in Baltimore, this is an incredibly active Bomb Group with a fantastic presence on the web. Thanks Gary! On a sad note the 303rd comrade search has confirmed his worst fear, eight of his crew members have passed away. Only the two he had contact with survive today.

My wife found this page quite accidentally, but we were delighted to find that it exists and thrilled to see my father pictured with his crew. I am forwarding the link to my children and of course to their grandfather Jerome (Jay) Schlottmann, formerly of the Fackler crew, who has resided in Colorado since 1953. If there is any chance to get a higher resolution scan of the picture e-mailed to me, I would appreciate it greatly.

For some years I'm doing research on the history of my home town. During WW II it was part of Antwerp (Belgium). On 05 Apr 1943 it was bombed by the 44th, 93rd, 91st, 303rd, 305th and 306th Bomb Group. I'm looking for ANYONE who took part in mission #29 (lead crew Maj. C.K. Wurzbach). I want to know YOUR stories, but every piece of information is very welcome! (please pass on my request, to other members and members of the other Bomb Groups)

On a whim, I came to this website. In two days, I'll be visiting the "909," which will fly into Oxford Airport, Oxford CT. Once again (after a looong time) I pulled out some sparse information that I inherited from my deceased father. My uncle, S/Sgt Joseph Markiewicz was a tail gunner on the Green Hornet (41-24603, 359th) and was KIA on mission #11. Other than some old photos, I never knew much about Uncle Joe, as my father and his family didn't talk much, and I didn't come along until 1953. I am stunned to cruise through this website. I was riveted to see the photo of the 359th's Sanderson crew: it's the same as the old yellow one that I saved from my father's things (he died in 1994...) I intend to learn much more... this website is invaluable. Thanks!

Just thought you might be interested to know that the DeHavilland Mosquito in it's final form flew 446 mph and it's later cousin, the DeHavilland Hornet surpassed 462 mph in level flight at around 35,000ft. AND the old 'Mossie' used to commonly fly pathfinder missions for all bombing groups (including other Mossies) in the European theatre until war's end. Luv your page....great stuff!

I found your page using the web search WWII bomber nose art. I was originally going to use one of these designs as inspiration for a new tattoo. Somewhat of a tribute to the people who defended MY way of life. However after spending hours on your site I am not sure if that would be appropriate. After seeing those men in the photos, and putting faces and names together,of men who died. Your site left me touched, informed and feeling even more patriotic than before, Thanks

Looking for information about my father, Captain Robert F. Butler. He was a pilot of a B-17 flying out of England. I'm trying to find out what unit he flew with and if any of his crew are still around, and if they would like to share information with his grandchildren. One of my most cherished possessions is his "Luck Bastards Club" card; he flew 26 missions and was sent back to the States. Other than that, he did not talk too much about his war years. He died at age 54 in 1976 of lung cancer.

My Dad was Richard C. Grimm, and flew on the Hell's Angels B-17... for which he received a Distinguished Flying Cross belatedly - I think in 1992 or 1993... After the past week's events, I felt the need to see something of Dad, and checked your web page, found his name, and was totally surprised to find his picture. He would have been so proud to know that it was there. I'm proud of all of you. God bless America.

I have received much information from those who read my earlier message on Lt.Peter Contos. I was pleased to hear from so many people all whom gave me valuable information. This truly meant more to me than I could ever express. I have learned so much about this great hero, however my search will continue for more information on his life. I now have information that the Lt.passed away on April 18,1990. I still do not know where he was originally from before the war, or where he was at death, if he had family still living today. I will continue my search for details on his life. I wanted to thank all those on this site who e-mailed me with information on the Lt. It has put some closure on my story at the same time opened many more questions for me. Thanks again for this wonderful site and to all those who helped. Shirley Parks

I just returned from Baltimore and what a blast it was for me. I met our bombardier, who I hadn't seen since 1944,our radio operator's family and, the greatest of all, met my first great grandchild. I recognized our bombardier almost as he came into the hotel. We had corresponded via snail mail and talked on the phone so we had already done a lot of the small talk before the reunion. Not so with our radio operator's family. We had a lot to talk about and I enjoyed every minute of our meeting. Charley Webster also enjoyed the meeting. I hope it isn't our last meeting. My thanks to the people responsible for the reunion and the ladies that took care of the really big things, You did a fantastic job

WOW!!!! terrific lift. while at outer banks beaches near cape hatteras n.c., at campen (60) annual family reunion last week, i got a grand phone call from my daughter . as all may know in our membership ,i have been searching for the last two of my b 17 crew. i got from aol white pages all the HALONEN names listed in milwaukee, wis. area and wrote each inquiring for any lead on my co pilot EUGENE L. HALONEN. after about 4 months ,a phone call arrived last week from him. i spoke to him sept. 9 ,2001. first contact in 56 years. he was not aware of our web site or history. he is an ordained Pentecostal minister, married to initial wife, has 3 boys and healthy. am providing miller with his stats for our needs. another member found. each of us helping to locate missing members may use this method. it worked for me three times.

betcha many of you have been torn between family commitment and personal desired matters. i am very very distressed that i had such a dilemma at time of our recent maryland reunion of 303rd. my committed obligation to transport elderly campen kinfolk to family reunion ,i had to forego getting to 303rd reunion. know all had grand experience and look to read of each's comments here and on talk site. appreciative thanks to outgoing prez johnson, and hearty thanks to couple that arranged and handled reunion in md. cheers to all. guess my reward was hearing from my co pilot eugene l. halonen after 56 years apart. hearty congratulations to new president rencher. fond of all you guys and gals. spec

In September 1985 I was shopping In Tampa, Florida. In the change I received was a Silver Certificate with writing In the margin on the back that read "Lt. Peter Contos 8th Air Force "Hells Angels Squad" this bill flew 39 missions over the enemy" I had tried everything I knew of to get Information on Lt. Contos. This man will haunt me forever. There honestly is not a day goes by I don't think of Lt. Contos who he was what happened to him. In 1990 due to a divorce I found myself desperately broke and needed to feed my two small children. I had to spend this bill on milk at a little store in McCarthur Ohio. I felt as if I had betrayed the Lt. yet I knew he was giving me one more gift as he had many years ago when he fought for this great nation. I had told the cashier of the bill before I purchased the milk who of course exchanged it for a bill she had in her pocket. I'll always wonder If this "bill" was as lucky for her as It was me. I'll not stop my search for information on the Lt. I may have found him here, Lt. Contos, Spiros P. 2/Lt 358th Oliver's crew? I'm not sure if you have any info I would appreciate you passing it on to me.

At a garage sale in the town I live in, I bought a box of memorabilia of a sergeant in the air corps who was an aviation mechanic. In the box were many negatives of the planes and men of the 303rd "Hell's Angels". I would like to donate these for the reunion so that the members could see what they and their planes looked like In WWII. My brother dropped paratroopers Into Normandy on D-Day. He died In 1997 In an accident at his home and I would like to donate them. Later, on as a LtCol, he was a good friend of "Tooey" Spaatz. He retired In 1963 In charge of research and development at Kirtland AFB.

Hi..I read the site often, but haven't contributed lately. Saw Brian McGuire's note about the Thunderbird.. must have been a real thrill for him, and provided a real "nostalgia" pull. By the way, Brian, as I mentioned on our trip to Molesworth, and I believe son Dennis mentioned, too, other son Tim has nearly completed his drawing of "The Old Crow" (uncle Lt. Vere Wood's B-17) and the fighter of the same name flying alongside, piloted by Bud Anderson, who lives in our area, in Auburn. He plans to have Bud autograph it, as he has other pictures, and would be happy to provide a print, if you think it would be of interest. I'm still reeling, when I think of my experience riding in "Sentimental Journey" shortly after our return from Molesworth!

Offutt AFB had its annual show this weekend, and I was privileged to watch the THUNDERBIRD fly directly over my house a couple of times at about 200 feet on Sunday. On Saturday I watched her perform on the base. She put on a great show. There were lots of neat aircraft but THUNDERBIRD was the star of the show for me. Unfortunately, she was not on display for the public, but parked far from the viewing line. Reminded me of the times we had the Sally B fly over Molesworth. May the B-17 ever fly at the airshows so the public will never forget.

Too bad they can't do more. Maybe in time they will, but memories are being lost as those veterans leave us. Best wishes

I've commented before. Love to go onto your website. Wanted you to know that your POW Tribute lead me to the incredible Air Force Academy's Stalag Luft III research collection. Wow! I have a friend, Colonel (ret) Harold Fulghum who was in that camp for three years, the camp written about in The Great Escape. I downloaded the whole research collection for him (hundreds of documents, pages, incredible photos, etc.) and put them in two 3-ring binders which I gave to him. He was absolutely astounded and said it is the finest collection he has ever seen. He found photos of many friends; he knew the Brits who escaped and were shot by the Germans and recognized them as well. He of course knew the Commandant who I gather was quite a fine man. You have no idea what a contribution you are making to many, many lives by the work you do with this website. Keep it up! Charlotte Iserbyt

The once Wiesbaden Air Base now the Army Airfield, has so much history packed into the little airfield 8 nm off the departure end of Frankfurt. I sometimes fly to RAF Mildenhall for small trips and marvel at the vast fields with quonset huts (once your airfields) and wonder what it was like. I cross the channel both directions on my flight to Wiesbaden and think of what you all went through on that 2+30 hr flight. Today we cannot compare but we do respect the actions of those that came before us. This is an outstanding site and I salute you.

I recently viewed the picture of Lt. Mcleod 358th Sq. and crew. I enjoyed seeing the photo, but my father Wayne Guenin is second from left kneeling. Thanks for the picture, and if there is anyone out there who knew my dad, I would be glad to hear from them.

It is certainly a pleasure to see photos of those to whom we owe so much. Thank you for providing this site. My Uncle, once removed, fought in the war in P-38s and 51s over Europe. It is an honor to be related to those fine men who've gone on before to provide us our freedoms, even if we've never met. Again, thank you for the sacrifices.

Hi, Great web site! Dad was a pilot for the 351st BG, 509th BS. Shot down by flak over Rouen, France 22/6/44 on his 25th mission. POW Stalag Luft III until late April, 1945. I joined the Bomb Group Association after he passed away in Nov. 1998 and have made many new friends. Just got back from their annual reunion; an experience I will never forget. The B-17 has always been my favorite airplane. I recently completed a scale R/C B-17 (flyable) with a 6 1/2 foot wingspan that I painted in 351st colors complete with Dad's BS markings, radio call letter and plane serial number. I collect B-17 artwork and I really enjoyed viewing your pictures. You all must be very proud, and for good reason. Thank you for a job well done. Your web-site is one of the best I have seen, keep up the good work! Regards,

My dad was Ernest Touhey. He passed away on December 14, 1990. I thought you might like to know this. I would like to hear some interesting stories about his life in the Hells Angels. Thanks! Patty

I came here in search of some information of a great uncle of mine who was killed in action. His name was Eugene H. Kannapel, but I refer to him as uncle Pete, as does my mom, his niece. I found out a lot here, but I was wondering if anybody knows his story. Thanks

Charles P Chalcroft was the much loved uncle of my dear friend and cousin, Sharon. I was delighted to find the photo of Uncle Charlie and to learn a little more of his wartime service in England. Molesworth is not very far from where I live.

I was a pupil at Kimbolton School from 1940 to 1945 and have strong memories of aircraft from Kimbolton, Molesworth and Chelveston flying over the school and the locality. I did not know the personnel but I have strong memories of the change in our country, and the arrival of the Americans with aircraft, vehicles, and even a 12 seater bicycle that the chaps had made and would ride into the Kimbolton High Street to go to one of the pubs. Exciting times but probably more so for the aircrew stationed at those local airfields. Many thanks for your site.
