The cover story for that issue is about the Mathis brothers. I have posted that article in a section of my website for bombardiers who received the MOH or DSC. Click on this link http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~hfhm/Awards/Awards_home_page.htm to get to the main medals page and then select Jack Mathis. Scroll down till just above the cartoon section and click on the link for the article. It will take about 30 secs for each page to display on a 56k line. But you can read as it builds. And to get on base, why type of information did you need. In 12 O'Clock High, Savage enters the base as the new commander and said something about an AGO (I think this is what he said) and how if the guard ever neglected to ask for it again, he would be very sorry. This closure was a part of the bylaws of the incorporation. The letter also mentions that Mrs. Humphreys and a son were involved in the closure. I don't know what the legal ramifications are when using documentation from a defunct organization. Just to be safe I always give credit. Maybe someone on the list will know more. On initial inspection, sheet metal damage seems to be merely superficial, but as the day progresses we will be able to better tell. Below is the write-up from our CD "The Molesworth Story." Were any of you on this mission? 303rd BG (H) Combat Mission No. 135 13 April 1944 Target: Kuge/Fischer Ball Bearing Works, Schweinfurt, Germany Crews Dispatched: 20 Crews Lost: Lt. Viets - 9 POW, 1 EVD Crew Members Lost or Wounded: 3 crewmen wounded Length of Mission: 7 hours, 30 minutes Bomb Load: 5 x 1000 lb G.P. bombs Bombing Altitude: 19,000 ft Ammo Fired: 8,300 rounds Schweinfurt, Germany was the target for today. There were no early returns. At the target there was 6/10 to 8/10 cloud cover which contributed to making a short bomb run. Contrails above 20,000 feet aided enemy fighters=96enemy pilots dove down at the formation after flying in the contrails of other fighters. Aircraft dropped 45 tons of 90 1,000-lb. G.P. bombs along with 50 bundles of USG 39 "Nickels" on the primary target from 19,000 feet. Bomb results were unobserved but 1 BD results were good. Moderate to intense and accurate flak was experienced at the target. Chaff did not appear to be effective. Fifteen aircraft sustained flak battle damage and one, friendly battle damage. Crews reported 15 to 20 enemy fighters. Direct head-on attacks predominated. Ten crewmen were missing and three men were wounded, two from flak fragments and one from 20mm enemy aircraft cannon shell fragments. Friendly fighter support was good and exceptionally good after the target. Three aircraft sustained fighter battle damage. Formation Commander Capt. Louis M. Schulstad reported, "The German fighters really swarmed over us today and it was one of the toughest battles we have had for some time. Our own fighter escort did a swell job, but they had too many Germans to take care of at one time. We bombed visually, but didn't see the results because of cloud cover that came over the target just as we passed over." S/Sgt. Vernon W. Stone, tail gunner on the Fortress Sweet Rose O'Grady, got a good look at the bombing and said, "Our bombs seemed to be pretty well concentrated in the factory area, but the incendiary bombs from the Group behind us were starting fires all over the town." S/Sgt. Edward J. Vallee, waist gunner, claimed one-half of a fighter. "There were about 100 fighters around us and one came in and peeled off behind our tail. The tail gunner and I let him have it and he went down in flames," S/Sgt. Vallee said. Sgt. Sam Faraone, ball turret gunner on Idaliza, was glad to have the fighter escort. "One FW-190 cut across in front of us and shot out our nose," Sgt. Faraone said. "Then the P-47s jumped him and shot him down in less time than it takes to tell it. They were really on the ball." Out of 626 aircraft dispatched, 38 were missing, 4 crew members were killed, 46 were wounded and 381 crewmen were missing. -- Gary -- Webmaster, 303rd Bomb Group (H) Association http://www.303rdBGA.com http://www.B17Thunderbird.com From 303rd-talk@303rdBGA.com Sun Apr 13 18:09:00 2003 From: 303rd-talk@303rdBGA.com (Gordon Alton) Date: Sun, 13 Apr 2003 10:09:00 -0700 Subject: [303rd-Talk] book on eBay Message-ID: <004401c301df$612e1290$8c91c8cf@altonmain> Here is a book about the 303rd that some of you might be interested in. In his Journal for his 14th mission, he wrote, "Fighters attacked the high group and made a pass or two at our group. After one of these passes, one of the Forts seemed to be having some kind of trouble. The pilot pulled out of formation and opened the bomb bay doors as if to salvo his bomb load. In about ten seconds the ship exploded in one massive orange ball of fire. It was a sickening sight to witness. This was the first time I had seen a Fortress go down like that. We were in the plane nearly nine and one half hours. We went through a lot of flak, and as usual, picked up a few holes. One piece of flak went through the cowling on the No. 1 engine. How it missed hitting one of the cylinders is still a mystery to me. There was no crew injury. The plane had to be patched up in a few places, but the damage was not very serious . . . . After landing, I decided to go the hospital for a few days rest." His next mission was 8 days later. Where would he have gone? -- Gary -- Webmaster, 303rd Bomb Group (H) Association http://www.303rdBGA.com http://www.B17Thunderbird.com From 303rd-talk@303rdBGA.com Tue Apr 15 18:36:40 2003 From: 303rd-talk@303rdBGA.com (Gary Moncur) Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 10:36:40 -0700 Subject: [303rd-Talk] GI R & R in London Message-ID: <3E9BE0B8.6176.B1D359@localhost> Gang, I received the following message and wonder if you can help Louise Pratt. Gordon Alton and I have discussed it with the 303rd BGA Website Committee and we all agree that our talk forum has run its course and it is time to move on. There is a wealth of information in the Archives, which we have preserved for your research. The archives are saved in their raw format, so if you are looking for something specific, it may take a little digging. The archives are provided "as is" and without any 303rd BGA support. They are available here: http://www.303rdbga.com/303rd-talk-archive/ The above link is also noted in the What's New section of the website. There are no other links to it. We sincerely thank you for your input, participation and support. We especially thank the 303rd Veterans for sharing their memories and knowlege with us. It has been a very educational and wonderful learning experience for everyone involved. The email address 303rd-Talk@303rdBGA.com is no longer in use. Sincerely, Gary Moncur Gordy Alton -- Gary -- Webmaster, 303rd Bomb Group (H) Association http://www.303rdBGA.com http://www.B17Thunderbird.com
