Hi Andy,
I didn't find a lot tonight, but what I did find was that the
303rd was part of a fairly big effort that day. They, and other 1st
Bomb Division groups, which included the 91st, 92nd, 305th, 306th,
305th, and the 379th. As well, the 303rd and 379th, together made up a
composite group of 20 more planes.
The YB40, the heavily armed, but over-weight experimental B17, was
used on this mission. It was found that the new, experimental, planes
could not keep up with the rest of the group, especially after the
other planes had dropped their bomb loads, and picked up speed. The
superchargers overheated as the YB40s tried to keep up, and resulted
in engine problems. The only part of the experiment that was retained,
was the idea of the chin turret, which was fitted to some B17F models
then in the field, and later on, the dual .50 chin was incorporated
into the B17G model.
It was a tough mission, and about a dozen planes were lost. The
91st BG lost almost half of that number (5), and each of the other
groups reported at least one bomber lost. Only about 10% of the bombs
hit the target, but it was enough to disrupt production for a short
period.

I noticed a typo on my previous email.
The groups involved were:
91, 92, 303,305,306, 351, 379, and comp.grp 303/379
I listed the 305th twice, and left out the 351st.
Gordy.

Hi gang! Every year I order special Christmas cards from England depicting
some event of the strategic bombing campaign. I always enclose a poem from
the era that talks about the air war and Christmas time. This year I can
not find a good poem to go with my cards. The card depict a Lacaster
(sorry, but it was a good card) coming in on final over a snow covered
England. Any of you guys, especially you Gordy, have anything worthy of a
fine Christmas card?

Do you have any info on the 303 Jan 23, 1943 Mission 30, Target Lorient
and Brest? My uncle , Oran T. O'Connor was the pilot of the Hell CAt
41-24580, one of the planes that went down on that mission. He was a
POW after that. I have been researching this mission and this a/c for
about a year now. I am trying to obtain more documents etc. I am
especially interested in the German documents, but can not locate them.
Thanks for any help,

Margaret, do you know where your uncle was interned, at which prison camp?
The info I have shows that plane, the 'Hell Cat', MACR 15473, as 10KIA. If I
know what camp he was in, I may be able to trace it back that way. Do you
have a copy of the MACR?

Kevin -
I do remember. Fortunately, we continue to get visits from 303rd veterans
and families. I kind of work for Betac - it was bought out by ACS a few
years back and now it is ACS Defense, Inc. Just like in the ocean; all
companies inevitably get eaten up by a bigger company sometime. ACS is
Affiliated Computer Services (NYSE). I'm in my 9th year at Molesworth and
should be good for at least another couple.
Cheers from the Motherland.

i am so very truly and graciously appreciative for the base commanders and
personnel's cards of expression and recognition of the 303rds' efforts for
our freedoms. each year they give me a real emotional lift as i am the last
of my plane crew living. to read the grand feelings of each as they appraise
our activities at your base assures that our efforts were not for naught
and
that subsequent generations will know of our youthful dedication. cheers and

I never heard of a JG26 that I remember. I suspect that the JG was a
German Squadron designation and the 26 was a particular plane in that
squadron. If it was a German fighter the best bet would be Mesersmidt 109 or
a Folke Wolf 190. I could be wrong. I usually am.

Yes, I received a Christmas card from a Senior Chief Petty Officer, USN and a
letter of appreciation from the CO of RAF Molesworth, for what our 303rd
Group did for the peace of the world so many years ago. I have received
these cards and letters from various personnel stationed at Molesworth, every
year for the past four years. It is most gratifying to be remembered so
kindly for our efforts during WW II.

JG26=JagdGeschwader 26, which was a tactical formation (fighter group/wing),
not an airplane.

Hello all, the answer to the Question, JG26.
As Larry said, it was a Fighter Unit.I will try to give more information.
This unit was,
Jagdgeschwader 26"Schlageter,"
There is a book by Donald L. Caldwell, JG26, Top Guns of the Luftwaffe. The
Foreward is by Adolf Galland., When Galland join the Luftwaffe in June
1940, he was transferred to JG26 to take over its Third Gruppe. From that
time on, JG26 was always his favorite fighter unit in the Luftwaffe. Since
Galland's two brothers Paul and Wilhelm, both successful fighter pilots,
were killed in JG26--the former as a Staffelkapitaen (Squadron Leader) and
the later as a Gruppenkommandeur (Group Commander)--Galland said this is"my
wing." It remains the Luftwaffe unit best known in the English-speaking
world--although as the "Abbeville Kids." rather then by JG26.
I recommend this book, as I have read it.

Subject: [303rd-Talk] bomb damage photos
Message-ID: <3A43A9AA.4961.4C77CC@localhost>
Perhaps some of you have seen some of the bomb damage photos that I have on my
web page, that were collected by my father before he returned from Molesworth. I have
finally made a list of the photos that I have. Although I intend to eventually scan them
all, I won't be able to put them all on net, however I wanted to post the list of pictures,
in case someone on this list flew one of the missions, or has relatives who did.
For an example of one of the better pictures, see
http://wejones.ftdata.com/wejones/kitzingen.jpg .
Not all the pictures are this good, but many are. Some are mainly pictures of clouds,
others are beginning to deteriorate, and aren't very good quality. Most have dates,
and/or names of the target, but some are missing this information. There are some
missions that have several pictures, but they are different pictures. Also, there are a
few, that don't seem to be mission photos, but instead seem to be file copies of a
particular target, but most seem to have been taken on the actual mission, and on
some you can see the bombs dropping.
Anyway, if anyone has special interest in one of these pictures, let me know, and I
can probably get a scan of it, provided that my scanner keeps working.
The list follows, sorry, not in any order:

Hi To All:
Me and my family wish all on the list the best New Year you and your
family's can have. I would like to thank all the Veteran's for all you have
done. If not for you guys I would not be able to sit on my couch and
complained about everything.
I am real good at sitting on my couch (or any body's couch for that matter).
Just kidding. I do hope the best for all of you. Take care, Thanks Again.

A most Happy 2001 right back at you in Bklyn., Bill. Been a long time since
I set foot in that area....once about 15 years ago I asked a taxi driver to
take me to the old homestead and he replied, "You don't want me, buddy, what
you want is a Sherman Tank. Enough said? Of course things have been cleaned
up since then. Good wishes from Florida....46 when we got up this AM, but
it'll probably be high 60's....hurray! Cheers, Bob and Nyela Hand

Hi Bob and Nyela:
I are sorry to hear how high the temperature will get down there. We
will just about make 30 degrees today, with 12 "of snow. So while you guys
think you are enjoying the weather, I will be digging out my car and not be
able to drive any where.
I have a lot of Heinekens stuck in the snow in the back yard and they won't
be here long enough to freeze. (something good from snow).
Have a great New Year. The best to you and your family.
Take care.
Bill

Hi Bob and Nyela:
I are sorry to hear how high the temperature will get down there. We will just about make 30 degrees today, with 12 "of snow. So while you guys think you are enjoying the weather, I will be digging out my car and not be able to drive any where.
I have a lot of Heinekens stuck in the snow in the back yard and they won't be here long enough to freeze. (something good from snow).
Have a great New Year. The best to you and your family.
Take care.
Bill

Happy New Year to everyone from the Moncur family here in
miserable Salt Lake City. Right now we have snow on the ground,
ice in the parking lots, 20 degree temperature and heavy fog.
Tomorrow we're going to drive up to one of the ski resorts just to
get a breath of fresh air.

Happy New Year everyone from Boise, Idaho. I don't know what the weather is
outside. I'm afraid to look out. I do have a warm place in my cold heart for
all of you. as your friendship enriches my life. If I had a car I would be
glad to go out and dig it out if I had a shovel I lie a lot. Really there is
no gas in it so there is no use digging. I'm thankful for all of you, my good
health, my furnace and the fire in it. Keep the peace men and girls, Keep the
faith. This is the only winter we have ever had that wasn't followed by
spring.(Yet)

Hello, Everyone.
I want to wish you all a happy new year, from myself, and my father, S/Sgt.
Donald M. Alton, 323/91BG. I spent Xmas day with Dad in the hospital, where
he now resides. It is not as bad as it sounds, as his care there is second
to none, and he gets company every day from a few sources. He is happy, and
getting along fine. I hope the next 365 days are good for all of you.

A crafty old friend of mine back in my Connecticut days had a trick that
always got his driveway plowed free. Well almost free. He stuck a bottle of
cheap wine in his mailbox after having arranged it with the plow driver and
it worked every time after that. But this guy was really, really cheap.
Good luck and good health to you...Cheers, Bob and Nyela.

Happy New Year to you and yours, Gary. Somewhere in my collection I have a
photo of the crash of 050 Old Thunderbird with four guys standing iin front
of the wing....hope to locate it and push it up on the computer and possibly
have you identify the men shown. Wish me luck....at least it'll get me to
clean up my stuff. Take good care.....Cheers, Bob and Nyela Hand, Boynton
